Fracturing decals ?
MAGNUM4342 replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's kind of odd - I built the 1/32 PL Batmobile a couple of years back (not long after it came out) and had no problem at all with the decals, as I recall they were kind of tough and thick, but finally laid down well with a lot of setting solution. Sounds like maybe there's a lot of variation in quality? -
Fracturing decals ?
MAGNUM4342 replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Alot of the decals made for Polar Lights have been doing this. It's gotten to the point that I automatically add a clearcoat before dipping any decals. Years back when the vintage NASCAR's came out (Petty, Baker, Pearson) Those decals did the same. The most recent incident was with the re-issued 1/32nd Batmobile. Step one, is definitely pre-coat. Make sure secondarily, to notify the kitmaker. I know Polar Lights has no qualms about replacing decals. -
1958 Plymouth dashboard gauges..?
MAGNUM4342 replied to Ramfins59's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
There's a guy on eBay that specialises in guages. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Models-Kits-/1188/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=1958+plymouth -
Hi guys and gals. I'm hoping to get a little support here. I have a spine operation coming soon due to a pair of collapsed disks down low in my spine. Futurabat (Jacen) and my sister have both moved out at the worst possible time. A couple weeks back I had a disk in my tailbone explode and another one just above plain collapsed. I have to go in next monday for an operation and I don't mind saying i'm scared out of my mind! I contacted our big Kahuna for some advice and he was awesome! Thank you so much Gregg! He put some of my fears to rest, but the closer the date for my op comes the more nervous i'm getting. I mean, this is my spine! One little slip and i'm in a chair the rest of my life. That scares me like you wouldn't believe. So i'm reaching out to the friends i've made here for moral support. Prayers...mental hugs...good vibes through the force, I don't care how the thought comes, I just hope my friends here think of me and send good thoughts. Thanks for reading.

Round 2 wants to know what you want!
MAGNUM4342 replied to Blown03SVT's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is an ongoing thing with Round2. They really do want constant input. I have sent them oodles (does anyone still use "oodles"?) of suggestions, and although many do not come to pass, at least they are actively seeking input. I think the other companies are great, but when they actively seek out input that puts them top of the charts as far as i'm concerned! -
The blue #40 is Pete Hamilton's PLYMOUTH SUPERBIRD, not a Daytona. The Petty teams didn't start using Chargers until after the Daytonas and Superbirds were outlawed.
-
The real street cars did, the NASCAR's like he is trying to build had none. The nose cone was blended directly into the bodywork, although some teams represented the rubber gasket with black tape.

Anybody else do this?
MAGNUM4342 replied to mnwildpunk's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Airbrush, rattle cans, jars...they are all just options. -
I guess this means I don't need to make a conVERSION kit for this one. I'll just grab one from RMR. I'm interested to see where this one goes.

Cyanoacrylate, AKA Super glue.

It would work, except for being too thick and the first warm day the corners will lift. Trust me I tried it years ago.

Speaking from personal experience...you cannot believe hardly anything you might hear from or read about concerning the Barris clan. They know nothing about public relations, are never forthcoming with what could be called "full disclosure" and in general are no help at all in such matters. No matter how complete the article would seem, I guarantee you something was left out that anyone attempting to complete such a paintjob would need to know. The biggest problem with using metalflake on models is the scale. Metalflake typically used for full size cars has flakes so big it makes a 1/25th scale car look like it's covered in glitter. I suggest using metalflake paints formulated for scale models rather than standard metalflake paints.

Okay then, duplicolor light tan verses white primer won't yield that much of a hue difference. I suggest going with a lighter shade of blue. Do you have an uploadable picture of the blue you want?
-
It COULD brighten it, but then you run the risk of too much paint buildup. I suggest you strip it and go with a white primer base, or a lighter blue. Remember that the primer color can sometimes alter the hue of a paint. Under most circumstances, a white primer will brighten a color while a black primer will darken said color. (I know, common sense ) Rust colored primer is usually reserved for reds and oranges as far as i'm concerned. Another thing you could try is to sand the paint down first, then hit it with white and follow that with the color. A little more info would help here. What paint brand/shade are you using, what was the original primer and what car/color are you trying to duplicate?

Clyde...I think it's time we have you talk to a proffesional about your obsessive behaviour.

That's essentially what I said. The reason for spraying and taping the white first is because of the neon STP red. Neons are typically very soft paints that tear easily and pick up dust and tape gum like a magnet, so you want to spray the neon red last. You also want a white base under the Petty blue to make it pop. So my process has always been- Flat white over all. Mask off the pinstripe and the parts that will be red and spray the blue. A paint step won't be an issue if you lay down light coats. I also tend to score the tape edge before I remove any tape. The blue will gas out and cure faster than the red and be a harder paint in the end. Once it's cured peel off all but the stripe and mask off the blue. Once the red is on I recommend not touching the car at all for at least a week. Tamiya neon red TS-36 is often used for the red because it's one of the few neon paints that will come out glossy and stay glossy. Testors racing red is a better match for STP red but comes out flat. If you use the testors, make sure to wear gloves until the paint has been clearcoated.

Thank you for the encouragement Joe. I'm totally freaked out about this, so I PM'ed our intrepid leader to quiz him about his back problems. Let me tell ya, Gregg is a really nice guy and he took time out of his day to help calm me down and let me in on what to expect. Some of it is a little scary but i'm not as wound out about it as I was.

That just seems like a long way to go to get stripes. Think about it, you're actually taping the car three times before you even mask the larger areas. First there's the tape line you lay down where the stripe should be, then you have to lay tape inside the red and outside over the blue. Why wouldn't you just mask off for the red, then after spraying the white base, go around the edge with the Aizu and then spray the red?

I bought a cheap paper cutter at a craft store. I then cut straight strips from a sheet of white decal paper. Sometimes you might have to cut a curved corner section by hand but it works pretty good otherwise.

AMT '58 Plymouth Belvedere CHRISTINE kit
MAGNUM4342 replied to cooltoys1's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Yes it does but it's still incorrect for Christine. The 300 has snorkel style air cleaners which are incorrect for Christine. Since Jacen left all his molds here I have the correct air cleaners in resin. -
And here's the fill in. Two weeks ago I went on a road trip and my left hip was bothering me. I came home about ten in the morning, cutting my trip short. When I got home the house was in a shambles, my sister was in tears and Jacen was gone. I found out later he went off his nut because of my sister, and packed up and left. They were to be married in June. I went to take a bath to soak my back and as I sat down in the tub...something went POP! I could barely walk for the next week. Long story short, the disk above s1 (spine) had exploded. I will be headed to the hospital soon to get it removed and my spine fused. I'm hoping Gregg can help me out with some encouraging words or at least prepare me for what's to come. I heard from Jacen earlier today and I fear he has completely lost it. Wouldn't tell me where he is or how he's surviving. As for me though, I could sure use some cheery words. I'm really worried about this operation and i'm hoping my friends here are pulling for me. Other than Jacen I don't have alot of friends outside the net.
