Whats a basic CFM to have for a paint booth
Miatatom replied to Polaco's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I built a booth almost 3 years ago and although it's gone through a few modifications, it's still working fine. My comments are on the second page of this thread: I'd go for something in the 150 cfm area if I had it to do over. If you're not slinging paint like crazy, it's possible to do a good job of evacuating the booth with a 100 cfm blower. It will fog up a little, especially when shooting acrylics onto lots of small parts. I build a lot of F1, Indy cars and sports cars with lots of suspension pieces. My booth manages a little over 8 complete air changes each minute. -

DIY Spraybooth question....
Miatatom replied to Eloveless's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've made some changes to it since these first pics. I've got 4 flood lights on a bar above the booth with a clear glass top. Hey, I'm old and can't see! The intake is in the back at the top and the exhaust is still out the bottom as pictured. I don't use the plastic sleeves in the other pic any longer either. I might just do a short write up of all the changes I've made. -
DIY Spraybooth question....
Miatatom replied to Eloveless's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If you build a booth that is enclosed and equipped with a fan exhaust to someplace outside, you don't need to wear a respirator, or as we called it in the nuclear industry, "sucking rubber". You know, your nose never itches until you get one of those things on. Mine is enclosed and exhausted to the outdoors. I never smell any fumes. -
Havana Motor Club

Loved the episodes of Cuban Chrome. Those guys are the MacGyvers of the world. -
I agree, they look great. Looks like you enjoy painting them. Maybe you should team up with someone that loves assembly!

I totally agree with your ideas with the exception of the stock block. F1 is the pinnacle of motorsports but they should follow what NASCAR is doing and make the cars harder to drive. The cream will rise to the top. I remember Darryl Waltrip saying his grandmother could drive one of those cars wide open at Daytona or Talladega because they were making so much downforce. We'll see how well their ideas work on 2/28. They'll be in Atlanta. Maybe I should bet on an over/under in Vegas on how many of the cars finish the race. Forty start and I'd bet 8 to 10 cars will be crashed out before the end. Or maybe I'm underestimating their skill level. I don't think so. PS I can't believe I said F1 should emulate NASCAR. PSS I'll definitely be pulling for Haas and Co. in F1.

May be true to some but it's certainly not racing they're doing at those places. Just a high speed parade. If bulldozing is blasphemous, my other remedy would be to remove the first 30 or 40 rows of seats, build even stronger fences, take off the restricter plates and let them have at it. That would never happen because of the lost revenue. As a side note, I got to meet Austin Dillon at a local convenience store just before Christmas, right here in little old Soddy Daisy, TN. That's where his girlfriend lives. She's a cheerleader for the Tennessee Titans. Must be an easy job since there isn't much to cheer about. He was also visiting Dale McDowell. Dale works for Childress and coached Austin and Ty when they were running dirt tracks. Dale's Mom was married to my cousin Joe Dover. Small world sometimes.

Are you using lacquer or enamel. Tamiya has a lacquer called Racing White TS 7 that's a creamy off white. I think it would look good with maroon.

Not sure how that works. Care to post a pic with something clamped?

I agree with the above comments. They're not really American teams, just American management. Nonetheless, I hope they can be respectable. Right now, I'm not a get up at dawn viewer. I'll watch some of the replays on Sunday afternoon and the races run in the western hemisphere. But I sure wish they'd take the wings off and race. Passing is nearly impossible. The racing is boring and the drama that seems to occur every week is silly. NASCAR is much better racing, sometimes. I wish they'd bulldoze Daytona and Talladega or at least get rid of the banking. Those races are almost as bad as F1. NASCAR has instituted a new low downforce set up and I think the racing will be much better. I raced sports cars, including some open wheel cars, so I'm not biased towards NASCAR at all. In fact, the opposite is true. Want to see great racing, go or watch a SCCA event. The entire Runoffs (SCCA national championships) were streamed on line and it was great.

Painting small or awkward parts
Miatatom replied to danman6677's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've used all the methods mentioned above but mostly I use the alligator clip method. When there are only a few parts that need painting, I use 3M double sided tape stuck to a bamboo skewer. Get the type that is like a thin piece of foam with adhesive on both sides. Another method I use is masking tape. Attach a strip of tape to a piece of cardboard with the sticky side up. Fold the ends over to stick to the cardboard. If it's long piece of tape, I'll put a piece across the middle of the strip, sticky side down, to hold it down. Then just stick the parts to the tape and paint away. -
How to get 6 colors from one bottle

Very interesting. I've got a couple of questions. What type of primers did you use (acrylic, lacquer or enamel)? Same question for the dark red, what type? -
Tru Color_Paint & Masking Paper

For masking, I like the 3M blue vinyl tape you can get at most auto parts stores. I got mine at O'Reilly's. -
Any better idea how to remove Tamiya TS-XX paints?
Miatatom replied to 花火's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
91% isopropyl alcohol works. The paint won't just fall off after a short time though. I usually let it soak for a couple of days and scrape it off, usually with a small flat piece of wood. The wood doesn't make blemishes on the plastic. Then I use a stiff bristle toothbrush to get the paint out of the hard to remove spots. I use Tamiya primer on the bodies and it's very difficult to remove. When I get to that point, I sand it smooth and prime again. -
I don't think I've posted pics of my snake. Factory Five kit, Mazda merlot color, 302 Ford engine, 5 speed. A lifelong dream fulfilled. Sold to a friend.

Anything Good at Harbor Freight?
Miatatom replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A wise sage that taught me a lot about wrenching on race cars explained why it was a good place to buy tools. If you buy a set of "whatever" and one of them wears out from use, replace it with a really good one from SnapOn. Mac, Craftsman, etc. to . The rest will be good for occasional use. -

Yes. Not a big deal though. I'm still on my first roll and have plenty more.
