Spex84 Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Up to about 60-70 now, about a dozen glue-bombs, only about 5 finished builds. It's a good thing I can't afford more, or I'd have quadruple that amount!
Phirewriter Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Given that my late father was a model builder and involved me at a very early age I've amassed a sizable collection. My current estimate is somewhere around 2800 unbuilt kits and around 200 built kits including what I inherited from my dad. Mind you I've been collecting 40+ years and still have most of what I built/bought from my childhood plus a patient and understanding wife.
Harry P. Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 If I go all the way back to my childhood to today, I've probably built several hundred models. Unfortunately, all of my childhood models were the victim of one of my mom's unannounced "house cleanings" many years ago.Today, I have probably 100 or so built models in the house, maybe 20-30 unbuilt (I don't keep a huge stash like some people do).
Phirewriter Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 (edited) I had typical Midwestern parents raised in the depression years. Unlike many from their generation they were not terrible pack rats but had enough foresight to keep what they thought might be important. Go to a southeastern Wisconsin area rummage in a neighborhood heavy with older folks.... It can be jaw dropping. The fact that my dad proudly displayed many of my builds along with his clearly helped preserve quite a few of my models. Thanks to him I have my very first glued together and painted by my hands model (I was around 4 or 5) made from his parts box pieces. Edited March 12, 2016 by Phirewriter

Harry P. Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 burned & blowed up around 100 from my kid days.... Oh yeah! I can't remember how many Saturdays my friends and I spent building models and then blowing them up! Styrene burns real good!

Myself I have maybe 75 built and 20 restoration projects and a few unbuilt kits but have no real count of them. I have been at it for 40+ years too.

mikemodeler Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Mine seem to breed like rabbits. Every time I go into the stash to find something of interest to me at the moment, I swear I find at least two or three kits I have NO memory of buying at all. I finally took an inventory and was surprised how many duplicates I had of some models, several of which I have NO intention of building but for some reason I bought them!It is not fun getting old, harder to see when building and can't remember what I have when shopping!
Snake45 Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Oh yeah! I can't remember how many Saturdays my friends and I spent building models and then blowing them up! Styrene burns real good! I can honestly say I have never deliberately destroyed a model, at any age.
martinfan5 Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 (edited) I dont have that many fingers to count that high(Guessing, its under 100) Edited March 12, 2016 by martinfan5
Harry Joy Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I have 112 kits in my stash (cars and airplanes). That's about as big as it ever gets, but it tends to stay at about that. Started keeping a stash about 12 or 13 years ago, when kit prices really started to escalate. That's the only reason I ever started one. If I calculated the price of my stash in 2016 dollars it would be scary, but I bought most of them cheap and still do. I rarely pay sticker price, unless it's really danged important to me.Currently, I have 21 kits on display. I cycle them into the trash when they get old. Since I don't keep finished kits in a display cabinet, they inevitably get dirty or damaged. For a very long time, I was finishing about two kits a month, but those were mostly airplanes. Airplane models are terribly easy to break. And also, as I build my skills always tend to advance, and I don't feel nostalgic for most of the old ones. I just cycle them in and out. It's much easier to just keep pics of old ones than it is to try to repair and clean them. And I don't have infinite display space.
Tom Geiger Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I have about 100 built by me, another 25 or so built by others, maybe 75 in the Olde Kustom Kollection and 1500 unbuilt / rebuildables. I did an inventory on resin last year and gave up counting at 200 kits. I've been at this as an adult about 30 years.I haven't had any kind of sell off over the years. There have been times I've set some aside, but realized that the ones I'd get rid of would be ones I'd take to a club meeting and sell for $5 or $10 each. So I figure it's not worth the effort, and I'd rather use them as parts kits or just keep them around.
Pat Minarick Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I,ve got around thirty built ,and about 700 kits.
Harry P. Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I can honestly say I have never deliberately destroyed a model, at any age. You missed out on some good fun...
slusher Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I have 120 built and 85 unbuilt and i did thin the stash some last year. I always miss some when i get rid of some in the stash so i will keep them around they are already paid for...
Draggon Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Enough so that my heirs will have to list them on ebay.
BubbaBrown Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Got back into the hobby in the 80's. Started buying 3 of every thing I liked, one to build now , one to build later and one to sell at swap meets when I retired. We use to like going out of town and eating and drinking at new places. She passed and I can't get one hour down the road without a pee break. Have several hundred , too many to count. Have several hundred started, when they make me mad I put them back in the box and work on another. I build to relax..Not for contest, no place to show so they stay in the box. I'm usually good up through paint and all are stuck on BMF.
Ridge Rider Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I can only guess. But, sure I've got over 1000 car models. Of that thousand, about 400 to 500 are built. Maybe more. That is very cool that you have built that many. I might own that many (500) but might have built 50 in my lifetime. I do wish I had any model from my childhood. I was very proud of my Great White Cuda and Magnum PI Ferrari . I would be curious to see how bad they really were.
gluebomb Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I have built 125 or so, 20 in progress, then somewhere over 400 unbuilt. I hate to say this but storing them has been getting difficult. With NNL East a month away I really hope I can find more room.

Not all my dad's are perfect either. Some I'm leaving alone and others will be fixed or restored. So true Michael....His old collection was much larger but a breakin here many were stolen and damaged. He had about twice that many so did I he collected promos and unbuilt kits...I am very lucky to have what is left...some will remain the way they are others will have to get restored/repaired. No one else wanted any of them...there was no way I was going to let them get tossed out. I still have the first model he got me and some day I will restore it too...Johan Haulin Hearse.
Snake45 Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 You missed out on some good fun... No I didn't. I found plenty of useless junk and trash to burn, blow up, shoot up with my BB gun, etc. Never had to wreak havoc on a model.
Dwight55 Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I have been building/collecting for over 40 years. My wife and I tried to inventory them once, and was distracted after 3 days effort. Never got finished but the count then was 3000. That was about 10 years ago. Whenever the Good Lord calls me home, there's gonna be one heck of an action.
