Snake45 Posted October 24, 2016 Author Posted October 24, 2016 About 5 or so years ago I bought a bunch of old drag car built ups off Ebay. Originally I had plans to take them all apart and redo them to my standards. Unfortunately, during some moving around this summer I dropped the Schartman car and it went everywhere. So while I had a little time yesterday morning I decided its sat on a box in pieces long enough. I put the Comet back nearly the exact same way I got it. ( the thread for spark plug wiring didnt survive the crash . ) And I had my chance to rebuild the Comet to my standards after it was scattered all over the basement floor. But I just couldn't do it. I even reinstalled those ugly green headers back as originally built. I'd love to find another one to build to my tastes. But alas its eluded me so far. Otherwise I've done nothing but give them a good cleaning and waxing then back in the case as is . Lord knows how long they've been built but my guess is a since the kits first came out. They have knicks and scuffs in them and the decals are far from perfect. And to be honest these pics make them look better then they actually are. These 2 are probably the best of the lot. ,,,,the others need more work and will most likely get stripped and redone at some point. Thanks for looking in I got one of these built off eBay a couple years ago. Missing the left side A-pillar but otherwise complete. I have the Slixx decals to redo it, when the mood strikes me. Meanwhile, I'll be scratching my Maverick itch with the blue one above. Yours looks quite nice, by the way!
peteski Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Since this thread was brought back from the dead, I read the initial post. "Models from before 1981"?! LOL! Some members here weren't even born at that time! How can they have models build (by them) before 1981? I propose the criteria should be changed to just post photos of models from someone's early days of modeling. Yes, I know this forum is full of old farts, but for a member now in their 30s, their "survivor" would be a model likely built between 1998 and 2008.
Snake45 Posted January 27, 2021 Author Posted January 27, 2021 That sounds like a different topic: Show Us Your First/Earliest Builds. This thread is about OLD models.
Oldcarfan27 Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 I think Snake wants to see old builds, not necessarily ones YOU built. I've gotten old built-ups before, but most were so badly built or broken that I hadn't planned to save them as is. This thread is for the few that got saved since they were built.

Although I did mention "your" oldest builds in the OP, of course we've opened it up to eBay buys, flea market finds, and so forth.
Draggon Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 This barely makes it in, built in 1980. The only thing I've done to it since then is to clean it. I think it's pretty amazing it's lasted through several moves and years kicking around in a box. It even survived a rage attack on my models when the wife found out she was going to be the ex-wife. ? And this one I got off ebay years back. I think it's pretty cool.
Snake45 Posted January 27, 2021 Author Posted January 27, 2021 Wow, those are both great survivors--just what we're looking for!
TransAmMike Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 I'm not exactly sure whenI built this but I'm 75 years old and this was built when I was in my early 20's. As I very vaguely remember the paint was model spraycan paint, all trim brushpainted.

TransAmMike Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Thanks Kevin. It was boxed up in storage for many years and I guess about 12 years ago I discovered it and it has been kept in a glassed-in curio cabinet. I'm amazed I had the skills that long ago to do the mods that were done. The sad part is, since I returned to the model car building hobby about 4 years ago, my skills still leave a lot to be desired.

TransAmMike Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Thanks "Snake". Since it was so freakin' long ago, I have no clue how I ended up building it like I did.

Gramps46 Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 These are some nicely built survivors that I think fit the criteria and were bought from a estate sale.
Kruzn Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 65 Plymouth Fury built by my brother in 1965. I repainted the interior and added custom wheels, but the build and body paint is all original. I built the Firebird around 1968. Untouched all original.
JJ Deuce Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Just finished freshening this one up. I'm not sure how long ago it was built, but I'd guess prior to 1981. Lots of tube glue, and the chrome was virtually gone. I stripped the chrome parts and shot them with Tamiya silver leaf. I touched up the flaky decals and gave it a few coats of clear.

Paul Payne Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 I bought this one on line several years ago. It's the Monogram sport coupe and was cleanly built and who ever built it used all the decals. The front axle had broken and it was missing the left front hairpin radius rod. I repaired the axle and fabricated a hair pin using one in my parts box. The seller also included a reproduction box with great art work.

ChrisBcritter Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 No, sadly. I guess if they were .jpg files straight from your computer they'd show.
