Hello,

I am very sorry I could not inform everyone about my trip to (Manila,Philippines) for a program because it was impromptu, the program was successful but my journey has turned sour I was mugged at gun point and all my valuables were stolen cash, credit cards and phone, where I went for sightseeing before leaving to the airport since my return flight is in few hours. Luckily I had my passport in my hotel room to get me home.

It's was a bad experience I need your help financially to get back home, I need to settle some outstanding hotel bills and also take a cab to the airport, I have contacted my bank but the best they can do is to mail a new card which will take 3 days to get here, Please let me know if you can help me out? I promise to make the immediate refund when i get home.

after some research, it looks to be part of that big Yahoo email hack/attack. Didn't know ATT email was with Yahoo. The timing is just ironic. Coincidence? Probably

Scammers know no bounds.  Common decency is a concept totally foreign to them.  Dirtbags.

Email addresses are often spoofed in those pishing emails.  Hackers use the first part of the email from a real email address and put some other domain name after the @ symbol. I get those often.

and be careful about accepting new friends on FaceBook even if you know them!   Lately I've been getting friend requests from people I'm already friends with. I check out the account and find it is brand new, has my friend's photo and contact information. Sad fact is that by the time I look there are already a bunch of folks we know who have been suckered in.  I usually message them all that it's a scam.

The other scam is friend requests from sweet young things... especially ones in foreign lands. When I look, again there are already several people we know who have accepted the bait. Guys.... sweet young things don't request OUR friendship.  We are cranky old men to real ones!

One day I let my guard down and accepted FaceBook friendship from my uncle. I didn't think because it was a week before my daughter's wedding and a lot of relatives were sending me FaceBook messages.   About a minute after I accepted his friendship he IMed me. Again, I thought it would be my uncle asking a wedding question... but he started out... "Did you get the cash fund I sent you?"  I am momentarily puzzled and reply "No".   The scammer replies, "send me your bank account number so I can make sure to send it rightly."    I immediately shut down the conversation, deleted the friend and reported the scammer to FaceBook.  They are pretty good. The account was shut down very quickly.  

Note that the scammer used words that no native English speaker would use  like "cash fund" and "send it rightly".  Beware folks, it's a bad world out there!

Thanks for the warning.  Somebody is recycling an old email scam.  I got that one a few years ago from a friend who's email had been hacked.

Here are a couple of other oldies that are making the rounds again:

1. Dropbox re-direct: a trusted friend sent me a link to his photos on Dropbox. While trying to go there, I was re-directed and my anti-virus started screaming - they were trying to download malware to my PC.  Solution: If you're going to Dropbox, hover your mouse over the link and make sure it says "dropbox.com" only.  That's the legit address.

2. Cellphone, Wangiri scam - this one dates back to the 1990s but has been updated for cellphones.  Wangiri is Japanese for "1 ring and cut," which is exactly how it works.  Your cellphone rings once and you see a "Missed Call."  You call the number back without thinking, and hear someone saying you won a prize or claiming to be an old friend.  Their goal is simply to keep you on the line as long as possible - you're connected to a premium overseas phone line, running up very expensive charges by the minute.

But you won't know that until you get next month's massive cellphone bill. Solution: watch out for Missed Calls from international numbers.  An international number will display the prefix "+xx" before the number on your phone. For example "+81" is Japan, where many of these scam calls originate.

Anyone with a Yahoo email account needs to follow the steps Yahoo has posted on securing your account,  its hard to know for sure if this happened because of the hack on Yahoo, as far as I remember reading, none of the account info had been put of for sale on the dark web yet.

A couple of friends just sent me copies of emails that I supposedly sent to them, from the back up modelcarsmag at yahoo.com email address.

If anyone receives an email from the MCM Yahoo account, it is fake, and some have had a link in the email. I have seen two so far.

Say it what it is: A Scam.

Your first mistake was opening the email with URGENT in caps. I'd delete without a second thought.

I was curious about it which is why I asked you earlier today. I didn't think members' email addresses were visible in their profiles and I wondered how you got mine. I marked it as spam and it just vanished. Didn't even make it to the spam folder.
