Porsche Outlaws & Hot Rods

Back in the late '60s or early '70s, the hot rod mags featured two Porsche projects that always stuck in my mind.

One was an early 911 Speedster, built WAY before it occurred to the factory. Silver car with big racing stripes. I remember the builder said he went through several cut-down windshields before he figured out how to do it without breaking.

The other was a Toronado-powered 911 coupe. Engine in the back seat, used the Toro gearbox and diff too. Had a fake leather-upholstered "fitted luggage" fiberglass engine cover.

Bill, I haven't yet checked all responses here, but it does ring a bell. This is Stan Townes 1967 Speedster. I remember doing a sketch of this in my youth. Pics from Pelicanparts forum.

:D Yes sir...that's it. Always wondered what happened to it, and really happy to see it was appreciated and saved. That was the first Porsche I ever really paid any attention to, and probably would never have known about it if it hadn't been featured in one of the US hot-rod mags.

Thanx for the great pix !!  :D

Can't help but to think that this car would look better with the tail lights Magnus Walker seems to like.

Maybe even the front end treatment off that same 911.......

Front and rear are styled after the 911R along with the louvered side window.

I've ordered from BNA, so I get email updates.  I see this line has a bunch of Porsche detail parts, many versions of wheels.  Too bad many parts are "sold out", just need to get whatever when you see it, don't wait!

Looks like a Porsche, sounds like a Porsche, lotsa Porsche-designed bits on it, but not a Porsche. Came across this one while looking for something else entirely.

"German coachbuilders Dannenhauer and Stauss hand-fashioned most of the cabriolet bodies they fitted to VW chassis. Workers pounded out the main body by hand over wooden forms—just the doors, engine cover, and front cargo lid were  pressings. Styling was definitely reflective of the Porsche 356, but certain details remained like the rear fender arch and the suicide front doors like those found on pre-war VW prototypes. Given all the handwork involved, the cars were expensive so few were made: estimates range from 80 to 135 with 18 known survivors."

Thank you for the heads up!  I recently got the 917 engine, and threw in a Ferrari 250 engine.  Highly recommended.

This triggers a memory, there was a Porsche run to Prescott years ago, I might have seen one of these.  Would be a slide picture....

And definitely hot-rods, kinda "outlaw" too, Porsche Abarths...

To my eyes the Porsche Abarth is the most successful rebody of the 356 era Porsche, and in some ways hints at what was to come with the 911. It should, and probably has, inspired many an outlaw project.

Nope, it went like this, I know EV West is working on their own Tesla Swap RWB style 911, but that is in more of a "School Bus Yellow" color
