High octane Posted April 6, 2019 Posted April 6, 2019 Gary Schmidt owner of Galaxie Limited and the man who started "the other magazine" 40 years ago had passed away this past Thursday. May he R.I.P.
Ramfins59 Posted April 6, 2019 Posted April 6, 2019 Sorry to hear of Gary's passing. Does this mean the end of Galaxie Ltd. ???
Snake45 Posted April 6, 2019 Posted April 6, 2019 That's sad to hear. "The other magazine" IMHO had a great deal to do with the resurgence of our hobby back in the '80s, when it was all but dead.
Gramps46 Posted April 6, 2019 Posted April 6, 2019 Rest in peace Gary. I agree with Richard that Gary had a big influence on the hobby back in the "80s.
Luc Janssens Posted April 6, 2019 Posted April 6, 2019 Never had the pleasure of meeting him, but he did some great things for the hobby, a big thank you to Mr. Schmidt, bon voyage
Lordmodelbuilder Posted April 6, 2019 Posted April 6, 2019 Thank you for all you did for the hobby. R.I.P. Gary.
lordairgtar Posted April 6, 2019 Posted April 6, 2019 As someone who was lucky to live in Milwaukee in the 80s, I met Gary at his Vliet street office then. As I had just moved from California and had endured a fire of my home where I lost everything, Gary gave me a whole collection of SAE from the first to the then current issue. I also got to draw the Model Behavior page in Car Modeler magazine. He will be missed.
GLMFAA1 Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 So sorry to hear this news, Gary was a pleasant person who gave me the opportunity to publish articles in his magazine, He gave a voice to the fire modelers. Was always a pleasure to talk to at the Toy Collector's fair in Maumee Ohio. I was fortunate to be the first face on the 'other' magazine and he was always positive about the car model hobby, May he rest in peace. greg
Dave Van Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 I won a SAE jacket from Gary back at NNL Toledo 11983....RIP Gary...
Classicgas Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Tho I never met him I felt that I knew him. SAE and Car Modeler are THE reason I got back into the hobby. I think Gary paved the way for small upstart model companies to take on the "little" big three. He will be sorely missed.
Jon Cole Posted April 9, 2019 Posted April 9, 2019 Another loss for our modeling community. Thank you for all you brought to the hobby.
martinfan5 Posted April 10, 2019 Posted April 10, 2019 Once I realized who he was, I had the pleasure to build his trailer kits and to read Scale Auto E before the E was dropped, the hobby lost an actual somebody that did something positive for the hobby.
misterNNL Posted April 26, 2019 Posted April 26, 2019 God speed Gary. He was a a regular attendee at our annual NNL Nationals in Toledo for many years to the point of sticking around after the shows closed late at night while we planned our next show themes. I vividly remember talking to him at the start of NNL 10 and him asking me if this was " the swan song" for the NNL meaning our last national show. He did our common hobby and uncommon service by keeping us engaged at a time when interest was waining. He helped us all and will be missed.
louie Posted July 8, 2019 Posted July 8, 2019 I found this out in the new issue of Scale Auto and Gary and his family are in my thoughts and prayers. I never had a chance to meet Gary but reading his magazine ( all issues over and over again ) it's as if I had known him for years. Rest in peace my friend. Jeff
NYLIBUD Posted July 8, 2019 Posted July 8, 2019 There’s a big announcement on the back inner cover of the most recent issue of SAE..We have to thank him for all he has given, and done for our hobby...RIP.
