This is the ghost of the 66 C-10. I received it from the friend of a former ERTL employee. It is a test shot (complete with ejector pin rust stains) from the 90's. I have everything except the tires and glass.

I have been told that this test shot is most likely associated with American Satco and a limited run of 66 C-10 promo re-issues.

At the time of the sampling the tooling was possibly owned by American Satco so it is unknow where the tool is now (Round 2 may or may not have it).

I welcome any corrections to the story as I have it so far.

I have no knowledge of American Satco having '66 C10 promo.....

I do have.... 2 of the Wheat '66 C10 promos which were molded dark green metallic around that year.

Satco announced an issue of this pickup in unassembled form, (I believe) with a 4 x 4 version added.  It never appeared, nor did their announced '66 Impala or belly tanker kits.  The only issue I'm aware of is the assembled Wheat version, in turquiose.  Those have vacuform glass, as the clear parts are always a separate tool which is easily separated from the main tool.

I also have some random pieces that are molded in what I would call a "mid purge" aqua green. Possibly transitioning over to the turquoise color.

IIRC, this was announced right before Revell announced their 64 Chevy pickup kit. Can't remember if Satco cancelled due to the perceived competition or if they were underfunded and could not make a production run. I had looked forward to the long bed and wish someone would do a version.

I wasted no time grabbing one of the Satco promos when they became available (from a Wheat's ad in SAE I think) and wish I'd bought a few more. The glass is vacuformed and includes side windows, which I don't think the original did? I notice there's an irregular ridge across the top of the front bumper; crack in the mold maybe? When I got it I corrected AMT's mistake and countersunk the taillights into the fenders, so there goes the collector value :

I marked this shot up for someone who wanted to build a longbed from the Revell or AMT kit:

Anyone else here have one?

Glad to see that you're building it.

As far as I know, Roger Sills still has it.

What happened with him and what did he do with the non Aoshima tire tooling?

Weren't the SATCO tires (those not from existing kits) made in China?  I had once heard that the SATCO unique tires were retooled once because the factory that made the earlier ones seized the tooling.  Even if he'd gotten control of it back, he wouldn't have been able to move it to another factory...

My first thought was "Of course that tooling must exist, it was functional in the nineties.  Even at that time, everyone recognized how valuable it was."  Then I realized we're talking 25 to 30 years ago, and that's an awful long time since it was run last.

Then I thought about how much of the Johan tooling was lost in the same era.  Heck, there were stories about the fate of some of the Revell-Monogram tooling being in peril during the recent Hobbico bankruptcy.

Seems odd that anyone would hold onto it and do nothing for that stretch of time, but who knows what other factors are at play?

If it's in China, chances are it will stay there whether it's ever used again or not. It seems that country is a black hole for corporate assets. Whatever gets sent there gets confiscated and never gets out.

Anybody here get the green test shot that was just on eBay?

I can't find the completed auction. I would like to see if the green is the same shade as the random green parts I have.

Thanks.

I purchased this '66 thinking it was a promo. Most promo are molded in factory colors and Dark Aqua Poly was a new for '66 color. Probably a Satco. Looks like it has the original '60 torsion bar front suspension with X frame, not the correct '66 suspension and frame.

The box is Satco. The key Satco detail is that the glass is vacu-form. I don't know if AMT ever updated the chassis (from 60-66). I will need to dig out my 63 kit to see what the chassis look like.

Chris,

Although I had nothing to do with the original measurements request, I still wanted to Thank You for posting them! I got some of the 64 & 66 Revell truck kits in order to recreate the (1:1) 66 long bed I once had and this information will be very useful!
