Ferrari 250SWB Chassis 1931GT at Le Mans 1960

Recommended Posts

Ferrari 250SWB chassis 1931GT  entered by Chinetti's NART enterprise for the 1960 le Mans where it finished 5th overall (2nd in class). It ran 300 laps, only 14 less than the winner (a Testa Rossa), 4030km at an average of almost 168 km/hour. Impressive.

This build started as the infamous ESCI/AMT kit but it received many  body alterations to fix a wide fat butt, flat roof profile, wrong side glass shape and front grill and lots of other smaller changes. I also added a mix of scratch built or aftermarket components, the most important being the substitution of the kit wheels & tires with Jack Modeling 3D printed Borranis and Dunlop Racing tires.

Very nice, Pierre - this is my personal favorite among your many awesome race car models (I have a soft spot for the Ferrari 250 series) - especially considering the kit you had to start with.

I followed your WIP and admired all your body surgeries: you turned this ugly ESCI (amt) model into a real Ferrari !

Pierre, another amazing build from your bench. I hope everyone who hasn't seen the wip go look at it. They will be amazed by the transformation you achieved. At first, I did not care for the yellow but after seeing the photo of the real car and how you duplicated it in such a fine manner, I am really loving the yellow Ferrari. The fine detail you added to the interior and under the hood is also a huge accomplishment, and again, your brushed paint job is better than most sprayed ones you will see in this forum. Thank you for sharing this wonderful build with us mere mortals.

Beautiful job Pierre. Love the not red and those wonderful wheels/tires.

I, on the other hand, will take the lesser mans way out and start with the Italeri kit.

That would have been the sane way to do it, but I could not resist the challenge offered by the so way off ESCI/AMT kit. Check that box...never doing this again.

The wheels and tires have been developed by Jason Hupin and they are superb. Jason is now developing out laced Borranis at my request. Stay tuned!

Thanks Helmut. I have learned a lot about the 250 SWB with this project and it has become a favorite of mine as well. Happy this one is done, not an easy one to do with the ESCI as a starting point.

A superb model. Pierre, you have out done yourself.  Followed your WIP , very interesting and the results are well

worth it.

Thanks Rich. I only started believing in it's feasibility when I put a coat of primer on the body. Definitely a challenging transformation.

That is one beautiful Ferrari 250 swb Pierre . . . and not a red one !

Perfect in every detail too . . .

Thanks David. Now I want to do a Rolls Royce in 1/24 scale and don't mind starting with a kit that needs some love. Tell me which one I should get?

It just shows what a little patience can achieve starting with a horrible kit.

Well done Pierre, given your starting point it's amazing.

Patience...and doubling up on the happy pills. Thanks Dave, eagerly awaiting to see your next project.

Superbly done! A most excellent build. Has the look and feel of the "real deal". Loving that color and detail. Thanks for posting.

Thanks Donato. Something about a yellow Ferrari. It's a good color for it.

Thanks Maxx. I like old kits in need of love. This one needed a lot of it...

Thank you brush painter buddy. it was a fun challenge. Yellow is not a big color for me but somehow it appears to be a great fit for this Ferrari.

Thanks Phil. Honestly it came out better than I was expecting. Definitely the most elaborate body job I ever attempted.

Well Pierre . . . You say you want to build a Rolls-Royce in 1:24 scale, and there are only three that I can think of . . .

First of all there is the Silver Cloud II by Minicraft, or Revell or Entex . . . then there is the Phantom II by Italeri, and one other kit is the Henley Roadster by Monogram ( Springfield Rolls-Royce produced in U.S.A. )

All these kits are not that easy to source, but I would suggest the Revell Silver Cloud might be your best choice, as long as you keep in mind that this kit has less than 30 parts in the box . . . The Italeri Phantom II is a nice kit actually, and they suggest you build it as the famous ' Star of India ' in the orange and chrome paint scheme, but you don't necessarily have to of course . . .

Great Job Pierre!

I also followed your WIP and loved your surgery to make more accurate. I enjoyed your comment about the factory hiro kits. I have both the early and late versions and after building the Aston Martin DP214 think they will stay unbuilt!

Thanks Russ. Difficult transformation but I persevered and happy that I did. I'd love to build a MFH but have yet to find the courage to pull the trigger on one of these intimidating kits. These days I am more into finding old simple kits and trying to add a bit of detail and realism to them. Just pulled the trigger on an old (sealed) Lindberg Mercedes SSK...

Thank you Dan, I'm happy this one is finished. Not an easy transformation.

Brush painted yellow ….   Ooph  ….  I mite sky dive first …

The secret is not in the painting but in the formulation of a color that is paintable. Yellows and whites need some tuning to be workable. If you like the yellow hue on this car then I've done my job well.

Pierre, that's the beauty of brush painting because of the use of dropper bottles and the use of the palate you can get a color very close to what is represented in pictures of the actual car. You just have to hope that the picture you use is accurate and, in this case, I believe you found a very good picture of the car that you built.
