AMT 71 Plymouth Duster 340

Hi everyone, 

I built this one recently. I didn’t know much about Dusters apart from the fact the image of one featured on the cover of the album Heartbeat City by 80’s rock group The Cars. After doing some research on the Duster, I discovered that they are a highly sought after muscle car, considered by many to be a potent performer for a small block engine.

l found it a great kit to build, the only drama was getting the side stripes straight. I finished it in Tamiya ts-22 as it was close to factory colour Sassy Grass Green. Thanks for looking.

Great looking color and finish. These were sort of an under rated car except by those who really knew what all it was. Like the OEM style detailing and the rally wheels.

  Bitchen Duster, Stuart! My little brother had a '70 Duster in Lime Light Green. It had a 318, 904LA automatic trans and a 7-1/4" integral rear axle in when he bought it. We put a 340 with a 'purple shaft" cam in it, a 727A trans that I built a very firm shift valve body for and an 8-3/4 rear end with a 3.55 gear ratio... It was an extremely fun car!...

Very, well done Duster. One of my favorite AMT kits and yours is outstanding. I always liked the Mopar High Impact colors from that era.

Nice Duster there Stu, yeah, these things were almost unheard of in Australia. I first heard of their existence when reading Stephen King's book Christine, Arnold's friend Dennis drove one. Your build looks great and that colour is killer, well done mate.

Sounds like it was set up nicely. You said “was” a fun car, l take it he no longer has it?

Thank you everyone for your kind words on the Duster. This was the first build that l bare metal foiled the wheel arch mouldings. Foiling is still something I struggle with.

Unfortunately, kids arriving, career responsibilities, etc, etc, etc. caused him to sell it more than 4 decades ago...

Hi Stuart, nice clean build. The older I get, the more I like the old Mopar colours. Personally, I think your foil work looks great. There is a tutorial about foiling wheel arches in the “tips and tricks” section by Steven Guthmiller that you might find useful. Wheel arches are tricky.

Thanks Steve, I’ve looked it up and it was a good read. I intend to put that method into practice on my next build with wheel arch trim.
