Bugatti Fan Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Having looked at quite a number of various different subject scale model themed videos on YouTube. Many of them appear to be more about where the emphasis tends to be more about the presenter (look at me and what I do) to gain likes and enough views to gain some sort of super modeller cult status when turning out some quite mediocre models. Don't get me wrong, there is some superb stuff out out there on YouTube like the A4 Garage videos for example that are well worth taking the time to view that one can actually really learn something from. But there is also a lot of dross out there like videos of box openings (boring!). How many box openings does one need to look at? Also many reviews that lack substance or any real criticism in their content, presumably to keep the free kits rolling in. One gets the impression that many of those so called reviews are nothing more than PR for manufacturers. 2
peter31a Posted January 10 Posted January 10 People join YouTube for a lot of reasons. But one thing that seems to get missed here is that YouTube is considered a community just like some find on Facebook, Discord or here on MCM Board. It's a way of showing our love of the hobby with others. Whether it's with our builds or information we have or with history of the hobby we can share. Not everyone is going to be A4 Garage or Doug Whyte at the Model Car Muse. They're just trying to share their love of model car building the best they can. Just like your town or the Lion's club or the Legion or whatever, you get people that just get a word in edgewise once in a while and somewhat seem to hog the limelight. They all contribute. Take what you like and ignore and stop complaining about the rest. 4
stavanzer Posted January 10 Posted January 10 YouTube Box openings are how I determine whether or not I spend my now (very) limited modeling budget on a certain kit. Seeing what's inside and looking at decals are very important to me. And it is nice to see different opinions from various channels.

TonyK Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I rarely watch these review videos as I mostly rely on the magazine reviews for my info. I have noticed that even they sometimes confuse me when they point out all the flaws and then finish with "recommended". Huh? I should widen my knowledge by watching more of these videos but would probably grow tired of them quickly. Sounds like this A4 Garage outfit might be good though. 1

Xingu Posted January 11 Posted January 11 YouTube videos can be monetized and a long unboxing, before getting to the meat of the video, can get you to the much coveted second ad slot. I feel some folks start out with good intentions when posting videos, but quickly learn how to work/maximize the system. 3
RSchnell Posted January 12 Posted January 12 I think a lot of these youtube "modelers" just love hearing themselves talk. I lurk on the Britmodeller aircraft forum and how those guys do unboxings is doing it right. No video just high quality photos of each sprue and a good discussion follows. 1

One thing that annoys me is the modern style of presentation and editing, a far cry from the TV and educational films we grew up with. Some video channels (any subject) can turn me off, while others keep me tuning in from time to time. One channel I frequent reviews model trains from a British point of view, from unboxing to running tests. Almost all of the products he reviews he had purchased himself. He prides himself on transparency. 1
bobthehobbyguy Posted January 15 Posted January 15 I don't really understand all of this animosity toward those who create content for youtube. Why is it such an issue that they can make a few bucks off of the efforts. Nobody complains if one writes a magazine gets paid for submitting an article. As far as getting kit samples if one is going to do lots of reviews it's unlikely they are going to buy all the kits themselves. As long as the reviewer makes it known that it was supplied by the manufacturer I don't see an issue.

So around here, every now and then Google ads get confused with what we do. All this talk of models, and a whole section about drag racing. I think I'll go sign up for OnlyFans, see how many I can confuse and get money from before they realize what kind of modelling I do. Big money, here I come! 3
