Three more police killed today. I heard that makes 29 this year. I don't know how many have been hurt. What the heck is going on ? Sad, very sad.

Please tell it's not true. I've been avoiding the news so far today. I guess with good reason. Unbelievable.

The rules of the forum on politics and religion temper what I can say on this subject. However one thing  I can is responding to violence with more violence only breeds more violence. Second I don't think the purpose of this thread was to discuss the ills of the world.  It was created  to discuss the minor trials and tribulations that we occasionaly face. That flat tire that  ruined your day for example.

As the old saying goes.........  I would rather be on trial for killing a man than to have him be on trial for killing me. I have great respect for the police but as good as they may be they can not be everywhere.

It has also been said that "I would rather be judged by 12 than be carried by 6".

No sane person wants to take another person's life, but given a choice between becoming a victim or defending myself/family, the answer is pretty simple. Those who do not value life will do whatever harm they feel is necessary, whereas those who do value life will protect others.

My heart and prayers go out to all police officers who have a difficult job to perform on an everyday basis without fearing some crazed jackwagon ending their life just because they wear a uniform and badge.

Well, here I sit at 3AM due to my sciatica acting up again… can't sleep because of the pain, so I may as well take this time to fire off a rant while I'm in a bad mood.

I don't eat fast food very often, but the other night (yes, another sciatica-induced sleepless one), I had a craving for a Whopper… something I hadn't had in years. So I drove to the nearest 24 hour BK and ordered a Whopper and small fries. That's all. One Whopper and one order of small fries. I almost had a heart attack when the drive-thru voice gave me the total… almost seven dollars! And that's with no drink.

I'm no dinosaur, but I remember when you could feed a family of four at a fast food joint for 7-8 bucks! In fact I remember the McDonald's commercial where they talked about buying a burger, fries, and a drink… and getting change back from your dollar!

I realize that prices go up over time, and I don't expect a Whopper to sell for 99¢ in 2016... but $7 for a fast food burger and fries seems pretty steep. At these prices, you'll spend forty bucks feeding a family of four at a fast food restaurant!

and the food sucks ! they always give lukewarm fries !

and what irks me more than wasting 15 bucks on sub par food is :

having a disappointed 8 year old granddaughter who enjoys going places with her papa !

Last week was difficult.  It seems there was a mass shooting somewhere in the world every day.  I  didn't want to get up today!  The next two weeks should be interesting with the two national conventions, and the potential for protesters and worse.   I'm in a Philadelphia suburb and I heard companies downtown were telling people to work from home during the convention here.   I live about a 40 minute ride west of the city. When the Pope was here, the National Guard was stationed here in town.  I can imagine they'll be back.

A couple of thoughts here Harry.....

1. The McDonalds commercial was from at least 35 years ago, and things have certainly gone up in that time. Yes, I remember, it was a deal because I was only making $3.25 per hour.

2. Given the fact that some states have raised the minimum wage, it's possible that Whopper cost more because the store owner has higher wages to pay, thanks to the every helpful government!

3. Many times they entice you to purchase the meal deal as it ends up being cheaper than buying the items individually, as you found out. You might have been better off buying the meal deal and throwing the drink away or saving it until the next day.

4. As was mentioned, there are usually some sort of fast food coupons in the mail or newspaper every week and you probably unknowingly threw away a chance to save a couple bucks.

Most importantly, any Chicagoan with a burger urge in the middle of the night knows White Castle is answer!

Used to be a WC off post in Maryland we would hit after a night at the bars. I don't remember what was worse, the hang over or the gurgling gut the next day. But it tasted great at O'dark 30 in the morning and you blew all your cash on booze the night before.:P

My Wife n I tried'em while on a Road Trip. Neither cared for 'em. I guess they're an aquired taste. Heck I travel 6 miles to get my Mail, now for "Fast Food" it's an 80 mile round trip. Quicker to fire up the Grill and Make some REAL Brugers;)

I'd pay the extra money instead of eating sliders.

It's a funny thing.  They got nicknamed "sliders" because they slid right through you.  Then the company adopts the name... and then the industry steals it as a description for nearly anything on a tiny bun.

A few White Castle facts...

The initials "WC"  are a clue of your next destination

It's no coincidence that the restaurants are decorated in white bathroom tiles

The next generation store will have 4 toilets around each table instead of chairs.

But we eat them anyway!  It's either the nostalgia thing or that model car builders are just that cheap!

I wanted to work on my Fiat Mefistofele today, but I needed some brass rod to make fuel lines, but didn't have the correct diameter on hand. Normally I would order the stuff online, but I really wanted to work on the engine today, so I figured I'd head out to Hobbytown USA and pick up some of the diameter rod I needed. Not the Hobbytown closest to my house, but the one that is usually well-stocked. So I get there, and the K&S display rack is more than half empty. And you guessed it, the size I needed was one of the ones not there.

Ok, so I go plan B, which is to head over to the other local HBUSA that's actually closer to my house. Same deal. The K&S display rack at this HBUSA is also more than half empty, and you guessed it... the size I needed wasn't there.

Pretty frustrated now, but I was determined to come home with the brass rod I needed, and not to have wasted the entire morning. So I went to the local Hobby Lobby, and yes, the K&S rack was full, and they had what I needed. After three stores I finally found what I was looking for. Should have just gone to HL in the first place.

The moral of the story: Shouldn't it be someone's JOB to keep tabs on stock and reorder as needed? There's nothing more frustrating than driving to a brick and mortar hobby shop and finding the display rack more empty than full. Is it any wonder I prefer to shop online?

There have been problems with K&S distribution lately.

Part of it is caused by K&S. They moved packaging to cards with a cellophane-type overwrap, and it's making merchandising the stuff hard; it's not like it was before when you'd get a box of 12/18/24/36 pieces that were easy to work with.

K&S, I guess, has also been having trouble getting stuff to the distributors, regardless of packaging.

A few White Castle facts...

White Castle was also the very first fast food chain, long before McDonald's ever came along. They opened their first one in either Wichita or Topeka, Kansas (can't remember which) in 1921, I think. I also think they're still only a regional chain (midwest, mostly). We have a ton of 'em here in the metro Chicago area.

Here in the south we have Krystal to me they are very close.

(Krystal is an American fast food restaurant chain headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It is known for its small, square hamburger sliders with steamed-in onions.)

Wichita, it was.

When I lived in New York, on Long Island, there were several White Castle restaurants there.  I love those little burgers....... Used to suck down a "Sack of 10" with no problem.  Unfortunately here in western PA there are no WC restaurants but we occasionally find them in the supermarket freezer section...... they're OK, but freshly made are better.

I use to love White Castle. And I live a an area were they are fairly common. But, in the last years I've just lost interest in them. And I don't really know why? Part of it is subconscious worries about how unhealthy WC's food is. Tasty, but WC can not be good for you.

White Castle was always in New Jersey as far back as I remember.  They were mostly in urban areas, where McDonalds based it's growth on following the growing suburbs.  Looking at their online map, I only see 9 locations left in the state.

Loved that White Castle coffee. It would keep you going on the night watch in the winter. That and after pouring it into the cop car's battery, you wouldn't need a jump.

The only WC experience I have on my area (New England) is 6-packs of frozen sliders in the supermarket frozen foods isle. I find them pretty tasty (including the onions) but I'm sure the fresh ones are much better.
