Harry P. Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Nissan sponsored a project where they solicited input from young people who are "digital natives" (born after 1990) to come up with a new design. Clean sheet of paper, no preconceived ideas, no "legacy influences" (that is, retro designs). Basically... show us what ya got. Bring it on. What they came up with looks a lot like a car from 40-50 years ago! http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/11/22/generation-z-designs-car-for-nissan-and-it-looks-pretty-old/?intcmp=trending
martinfan5 Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Yes it does, and I hope it goes into production , and I didnt even have to click on the link to know what car you are talking, bring on the return of the 510
PappyD340 Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Well looks like it has some of the same lines that the Dodge Charger has (IMO), doesn't look very appealing to me!
Erik Smith Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 The Nismo track version is cool - the "standard" one in back needs some tweaking.
DPNM Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I like them. They do have that retro 510 look. I've owned quite a couple different types of Datsun's (now Nissan) in my day. Great cars and trucks that would run forever. Too bad they used inferior steel. The bodies in this part of the country don't hold up.
charlie8575 Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 For those who make fun of us who say new cars don't inspire...well, here's some proof. This was a rather interesting article linked to it, too. http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/11/22/six-cases-shocking-automotive-longevity/?intcmp=trending Charlie Larkin
Austin T Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I really hope they sharpen the rear roof/window area to make it look more 510ish. Other than that I love it. I just hope the production version doesn't look like an average Nissan.
martinfan5 Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 The bodies in this part of the country don't hold up. Tell that to my 01 Maxima with just over 300,000 on the OD, all body panel's in tact
Nitro Neil Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Yeah, I like that it doesn't look like a squashed jelly bean. Kinda cool.
Harry P. Posted November 25, 2013 Author Posted November 25, 2013 Tell that to my 01 Maxima with just over 300,000 on the OD, all body panel's in tact Jim lives in Pittsburgh. You live in Phoenix. How much salt do they throw down over the "winter" there? Obviously cars don't rust in a hot, dry climate the way they do in a "normal" four seasons climate.

After I posted I realized that he was talking about rust, so my mistake I suffer from NTBT Edited November 25, 2013 by martinfan5
ToyLvr Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 The shape vaguely reminds me of my '72 Celica....
lordairgtar Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I can see the 510 influence, but I see a lot of F10 ugly in there too.
Lunajammer Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 The shape vaguely reminds me of my '72 Celica.... I agree with this one. Or notchback Carolla.
Chuck Most Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Not digging the side window shape, but I like the rest. And I have to agree the 510 influence is crystal clear in the design.
FASTBACK340 Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Tell that to my 01 Maxima with just over 300,000 on the OD, all body panel's in tact Yeah...Yeah...Yeah... Arizona, the "rust-belt"! I have a 1999 Maxima and just recently the r/r wheel well lip is showing a few bubbles towards the back. That's NYC since new, stored outdoors most of it's life. Granted, it only has 125K, but I'm optimistic it has another 100K plus left in her. But here's the truth: I've worked for Nissan proper the last 20+ years, almost entirely with Infiniti. And I'll say this: after seeing the Cube, Juke, the space-ship techno-sled Q-50 (which is starting out as a glitch-ridden nightmare) and now the re-orginaztion (and confusion....) of re-naming the ENTIRE Infiniti line-up, I doubt Nissan has a clue as to what it's doing. A retro 510 would be cute, if they followed Toyota/Scion and made an affordable front engine/ rear drive coupe. More than likely, it will have a 4 cylinder with that annoying CVT transmission..... We can only hope.
58 Impala Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I like it, a retro 510. I think it will go over we'll. As far as someone saying it's ugly, I have one word......Juke. @-@
Deathgoblin Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I really like the "new 510" design. It looks to me like maybe some of the car companies are trying to get away from the beige look they all have anymore. I'd love to see an updated version of an early 70's Celica
1972coronet Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 And I'll say this: after seeing the Cube, Juke, the space-ship techno-sled Q-50 (which is starting out as a glitch-ridden nightmare) and now the re-orginaztion (and confusion....) of re-naming the ENTIRE Infiniti line-up, I doubt Nissan has a clue as to what it's doing. We can only hope. There must be a "think tank" of 10 year old boys who've designed the Cube and Juke ( what the deuce is a "Juke" anyhow ? A contraction of "Junk" and "Puke" ??) . A retro-esque 510 would be great ! They'd probably sell a million of 'em within the first year ! So long as the engine is mounted in the correct layout (e.g. , front engine / rear drive) ... I despise CVT transmissions ! The theory behind their operation is fine ; I just prefer to feel the transmission go through its gears (think: firm shifts , respective to the vehicles' intended purpose). And , I certainly hope that , as you've surmised , Nissan decides to launch a Scion-type line . I rather enjoy the "K.I.S.S. Prinicpal" , especially in regard to vehicles ! You can keep your stupid touch screens and cameras !
Dr. Cranky Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 The funny thing is that they've been thinking INSIDE the box. It's all they've seen all their lives, square, non-specific angled cars. It doesn't surprise me that this is what they came up with. Hopefully the next generation will come up with some cool Steampunk/Zombie Apocalypse ideas. LOL!
