IMC CHAPARRAL 2-E
unclescott58 replied to Hooked on Chaparral's topic in Other Racing: Road Racing, Salt Flat Racers
I wish there was a way for this kit to be brought back. It's still one of coolest looking race cars ever. -
Fun thread to read. And a great review/look at the kit, Tim. I'm excited by this one. I already have one on preorder. I love the old style, simple kits like this. I'm okay with the molded in headlamps. I like the simple chassis with metal axles and screws to hold them in place. They help make them lined up and sit level. Even as a kid, I could build a pretty good look replica of the real car using these kits. And they held together after they were done. Very few parts to fall off after were finished. I love them.

Roden 1/35 1941 Packard, anybody have one?

Ow! I just when eBay to see about ordering one. The price is a little more than I'm willing for a kit of that particular car in that scale. -

Cool. Another kit to hunt down and add to the collection. -
The street version of the BMW M1 is going on my want list.

Thank you both. Those are good suggestions. Had our on-line model car club meeting two nights ago. Got basically same advice from the guys there. Drilling out and using wire the same basic diameter as the vinyl tubing. That seems to be best suggestion.

F*** IT! Those BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH plug wires can not be put on! Or, in the long run, stay on. BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH! I hate when things like this happen. I'm 62, almost 63. I've been models since I was 7. I should be able to do this!

Yes I did. It didn't seem to help. But I have good news. I tried a little soap. Between that, the OptiVisor, and a little patience, I was eventually able to get the coil wire on. Now we'll see what I can do with the plug wires. I'm hoping this will work. I like the looks of the vinyl tubing for the coil wire and the two radiator hoses so far.

Back to these kits. How does one install the vinyl tubing given in this kit for the spark plug wires? I'm presently building AMT's 1/16 scale '65 ('64 1/2) Mustang. But, I can not get the vinyl tubing to go on to the nubs provided for them on the coil or distributor. It's too tight. I've tried a small nail to stretch open the tubing some more. But, as soon as I pull out the nail, it immediately goes back to it's original diameter. And will not fit on the plastic nubs. Any ideas? I've talked to a couple of guys in our local model car club. Neither of them had an answer. If it's impossible to use the kits "wiring," I may just build the kit without any engine wiring at all. That detail does not matter to me that much. It would be nice to use it. But, I'm not going to substitute it with something else if it does not work.

Despite how bad, in particular, the vent wings and wheel covers are in this kit. Amongst other things. I finally had to buy one.

Interesting Comparisons
unclescott58 replied to unclescott58's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A couple of days ago, I finished building Revell's 1/32 scale Corvette C3 (1969) kit. A couple of years back, I built their 1/32 scale Opel GT. So it is natural to post pictures of the two together. Either the Corvette is too small. Or the Opel too big. Because from looking at the photo of two real one together, the model are just a little too close in size. -

Exactly. They say the 1st generations Seville was based off of the GM X-body platform (Nova, Omega, Ventura, Apollo). But, not enough to tell in the end. Where with Versailles, you could tell it was directly related to the Granada/Monarch. I quite figured out how Ford thought they could get away with that one? Especially with the car sitting on there Lincoln-Mercury show floors with the Monarch. As close as the Monarch and Versailles were. And how nice one could option out a Monarch or Granada, how did they think they could pull that one off? Yet they did. My folks bought a stripped Mercury Monarch in 1975 to replace their '67 Mercury Comet 202. When I say stripped, the only option was an AM radio. It was a 2-door with a three on the tree and the 200 cu.in straight six. The base '75 Monarchs did come with bucket seats. No basic bench until the '76 models. The particular car they decided to buy had one minor defect. If you did not get the optional digital clock, it was replaced with a Monarch nameplate on the dash. In the case of the car they were buying, it had a Granada nameplate in its place, instead. The dealer, good old Northside Lincoln-Mercury in north Minneapolis, did change it out soon after my parents bought the car. A Monarch or Granada? They were so close, that guys on the assembly line either couldn't tell or care, what name was on the dashboard. -

Going back to this one. It amazes me that here are two cars. From two big competitors at the time. Aiming at the same market/customer. With two cars that look so different. -

I heard from a couple of people over the years, that the GM H-body Skyhawks and Starfires with the 3.8 were really quick. Better than the Monzas with 4-cylinder. Or even the V-8. The V-6 making for a better handling car, over the heavier Monza V-8. -
Terrible Box Art
unclescott58 replied to Junkman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Speaking of "Flower Power" and bad box art. AMT also gave us the Michael J. Pollard "Flower Power" '36 Ford. Ugh. Between Pollard himself, who I always found a little creepy. And the flowers. In would have been tough to get me to part with my money on that one. -

I think Patrick got winner on this. The AMT Flower Power series has got to take the cake for the worst box ever. I know in general what the kits I each box looked like. But, I'm curious about the decal used in these kits. Anybody have pictures of the decals? -
Looks great.

Pretty Caddy. Nice job.
