Liquid cement questions
russosborne replied to russosborne's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
OT For SSNJim, I am a former submariner also. I only served on one, the USS John C Calhoun, SSBN 630. 1979 to 1983. I was a missile fire control technician. FT(b). Poseidon C3 originally and then the Trident 1 C4 backfit missiles. Did my 6 and got out. Liked the job, hated the boss. Russ -
Liquid cement questions
russosborne replied to russosborne's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks, all. Sounds like the MEK might be the way to go. I am not in a huge hurry, so I will see if any one else posts other ideas and do some more research. Being in the Phoenix metro area I have to believe that there are plastic supply shops around, I just haven't had a chance to research yet. Only thought of this last night. Might have to buy a bottle of the Tamiya stuff just for the bottle. I haven't used those yet, but I agree the others are way too top heavy and unstable. I imagine those bottles are cheaper for the manufacturer though. Or they like the idea of the customer spilling the glue so the customer has to buy it more often. Just have to remember not to use any plastic bottles for the MEK. Russ -
I've been reading lots of info here on this subject. I am more confused than before. What I am trying to do is get the best bang for the buck, as I am currently unemployed other than helping out my brother for a month or so. Any constructive thoughts or suggestions most welcomed. Looking only for liquid cement information here. And if I have missed any options please feel free to bring them into the mix. In the past I have used Ambroid Weld (which I think I liked, but it's been a long time and it sounds like it is gone for good ) Tenax, the Plastruct stuff, etc. I honestly don't remember having a preference for any over the others. I would prefer these days for whatever it is to be strong and quick since I generally am using my other hand to hold whatever it is I am gluing and my hands aren't like they used to be. I do want there to be a good bond/weld. I remember some of what I have used in the past not holding well. So I started thinking about the MEK that I can go buy tomorrow at Lowes very cheap. But I also like to breath, so that may not be the best idea. I do have a car painting respirator I could use, but this is a closed house with my wife, mother in law, and 5 animals all inside as well. Someone also mentioned using an MEK substitute, but again I haven't found any real follow up on how that has worked. Someone about 3 years ago in a thread mentioned using Nail Polish thinner, but I didn't see any real follow up on how that worked. A couple here at least have mentioned Weld-on 3. So I did a search on Amazon for that, and found that not only it isn't that cheap anymore, but there is also a 4 now. Not sure what the differences are, both are still available. Buying a pint of either now with shipping is more than buying a pint's worth of hobby store cement. Local is an option I haven't been able to check into yet. They also sell syringes made by the same company, but they aren't that cheap(over $5 each) and I think the size is way too big. 25 gauge needles. Might be great for what the glue is intended to be used on, but probably not so great for 1/25th models. As far as buying model brand cement, I was looking for the Tamiya extra thin today, but the 2 hobby shops I was at didn't have it. Neither one is really well stocked anyway. At the rate I have been building I do have enough branded "model" type cement around to last a while, if I don't dump another bottle of it like I did earlier this week. But I am hoping that I can start feeling more like building and need to come up with a plan for that. If it ends up being best to buy the hobby store stuff I'll deal with that, but it sounds like at least to many here that buying other ways works better. I have been using the brush that comes in the bottle to apply the cement up til now, but I just bought another Touch n Flow set since I can't find my first one that I bought years ago but never really used. I am hoping to be able to use that instead. Being a diabetic doesn't automatically get you syringes either. My wife is one (so am I for that matter, but I have no insurance hence no drugs) but she doesn't use that sort of insulin. Her's is a prefilled plastic syringe with measured doses and I haven't been able to tear one apart and still be able to reuse it. Thanks, Russ

It might help if you list some of the other things you are interested in. Russ

Bought an AMT Corvair Funny Car. This is one I never had as a kid. Had a coupon for a semi-local hobby store(in Tempe, I'm in Glendale) and honestly there wasn't a great selection so I decided to get this instead of another duplicate. I also bought a Badger Paint Mixer. For as long as my paint sits unused this might be the most economical purchase I have ever made. Of course I will have to actually paint a model to get my money's worth out of it. Also got another Touch and Flow system. I have another one somewhere, but I have no clue where and I think I need to use one. Last attempt using liquid cement was pretty much a failure using the supplied brush in the bottle. And a small supply of sandpaper for my Flex-i-File. Now to find the tool. Hmmm, that seems to be a common thread with me. Russ

Is the room still limited to 5 users at a time, or did that change? I haven't tried it since just after it came back, just to try it honestly. I am not really a chatter type. Russ

I just went to the Hobby Depot today to use the 50% off coupon I got in the October email. To me there was very little in that place. Lots of empty pegs. Very little in the way of car models. Took me a half hour to finally decide on a car model to buy, I didn't really like any of the choices. And they didn't have any Model Car or Scale Modeller magazines even. I bought a few supply type things as well as the model, but honestly Hobby Lobby has a better kit selection. There were a few that (my, at least) HL doesn't carry and I bought one of those. The Corvair Funny Car. For most purchases I will be going to HL and using their 40% off coupon. Given the lower prices to begin with the kits are cheaper there even taking into the occasional 50% off coupon at Hobby Depot. As far as Hobby Town goes, I was also just at the one on 35th and Greenway tonight. Tried buying the latest Model Car mag there, but the cashier couldn't figure out how to use a debit card with the chip installed, so after a couple of tries I told him to forget it. Only forget wasn't the word I used. Might seem hard, but I will never go back to that one. I for one wouldn't miss them if they go away. Last time I was there (during a weekday afternoon) a week or so ago the cashier made me feel like he thought I was scum and had to be watched so I didn't run out the door with a magazine I picked up before looking over the kits. Which still seem to be at least 90% the same ones as when they opened. Not much new at all. But hey, they have a great selection of RC BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH. Russ

If you are airbrushing, could you tint the white primer with a bit of yellow? I really don't know if it would work, just bringing it up for discussion. Russ

Scale Modeling and Youth?
russosborne replied to drsnapper55's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree with Gary. I have never understood the need that some people have of "passing down" a hobby, job, way of life, etc. When I am dead and gone I don't give a rat's rear what happens after that. And things change. We (old farts) might think it is for the worse, but generally it really is for the better, at least for those living after that change has taken place. Personally, I am a big fan of indoor plumbing, for an example. As long as models last my lifetime I will be happy. If they don't, there are lots of other things to do with my time that I will also be happy with. BTW, I am not against younger people getting into this. I gave a good third or more of my then stash to a kid back in Ohio about 6 years ago who's mom had advertised on Craigslist asking for a couple of kits for her son to build since he was interested but they couldn't afford to buy any for him. If someone wants to do this I will help if possible. But I am not putting a gun against a kid's head saying you have to do this to make me feel better either. Russ- 43 replies

Where did you start building model car kits?
russosborne replied to Greg Myers's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
My dad built model cars, so that is where I started. I would, however, build anything that anyone would give me. Cars, airplanes, ships, tanks, etc. I never built for accuracy, I built for the joy (to me) of just building. Get them built as fast as possible to play with. Maybe 2 or 3 in a day if I was lucky enough to have that many. Then I would take built models apart and rebuild them in weird ways with a wood burning iron instead of glue. I almost always had an old fashioned paper grocery bag full of parts to play with like that. In my teens(1970's) I got a bit more serious with them, to the extent of painting the bodies and adding the decals. But it was still more of a get it built to set it on a shelf asap thing. I still enjoy just building them, not as into paint and details as most are here. Probably why I have so many started but almost none finished. I stall out when I get to the point on a kit that I have to paint. The couple I have actually finished the last 10 years are unpainted. Russ -
I bought the AMT 25 T Fruitwagon. I had really wanted to get the new Revell Model A, but the Hobby Lobby nearest me doesn't have it yet. I am very limited in funds, so it has to be bought using the 40% off coupon these days when I do get to buy anything. And I didn't feel up to driving around to other HLs in the area. Main reason I bought this one is most of the others I was thinking about I already have or have had in the past at least one, or they are on the "iffy" to me list. And this one builds two kits, which was the deciding factor. I have already started it, which is rare for me these days. Maybe I will actually get one finished one of these days. Russ

Preferably in a spray can, not set up right now to use my airbrush. And it needs to be something a local store should have. Lack of planning on my part, need to do this before the end of the month. I seem to remember there being something years ago, but not sure if anything is around now. Close would be good enough. Plain brown is just too plain. But that is my backup choice. But I am open to other ideas in the brown family. Thanks, Russ

Quick Overview: Revell Starsky & Hutch Torino
russosborne replied to Chuck Kourouklis's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Thanks. To quote part of his review "21-piece 351 looks fair;" he doesn't mention Cleveland. Could have been a Windsor, or even (although wrong for 74) a Modified. Yes, I am a Ford guy. Russ -

What engine is included with this? Thanks, Russ -
Holy cow! I too thought that this was just a basic kit build with polished plastic. Your skills are amazing! You should be proud to have this on your shelf. Russ

Looks just like a lot of the 1:1 cars that used to be real popular here in Phoenix 30-40 years ago. Very nice. Russ

Ray, it looks great. I just picked up one of these. It's the first kit I remember watching my dad build when I was about 4 or 5. Can't decide how to build it, I really need several so I can build all of the box versions. My dad's birthday is the end of this month, I should build it for him for his birthday. Russ

Yet another of my all time favorites. Thanks for giving me some good memories. I've got one almost completed somewhere. I need to dig it out and finish it. Yours looks great. Looks like it was mostly straight out of the box. My kind of build. Russ

Another one of my all time favorites. Got several of these, maybe I should get to building one. Yours looks great. Great inspiration as well. Russ

I can't really tell, did you paint the interior the same color? If not, how did you install the interior after building/painting the body? One of my all time favorites. Yours looks great. I never would have thought about lowering the back end like you did, but that is an excellent way to do it. I'm really liking all of the Tom Daniel's cars showing up here recently. Probably 7 out of my top 10 of all time models are his. You guys are making me want to actually get going and build one or two. Russ

Where to find a 351 Cleveland engine?
russosborne replied to brodie_83's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Here is a place that sells resin engines. You have to scroll down a bit to find the stock Cleveland. http://www.scalemodelingbychris.com/smbc_partsp1.htm HTH, Russ -
Harry, I understand what you are saying, but most of the other forums I am on do the exact opposite, because those photohosting sites can go away(has happened in the past), or users can cancel the accounts either voluntarily or by not paying to keep them active. Wth that the pictures that are linked in the post to that site are then gone, and the other forums really want the pictures to stay around as the posts pretty much are useless without them in many cases. Granted, the sites I am talking about are for 1:1 cars, but I would think that losing the photos here would be a bad thing as well. Obviously just my opinion. But I won't be posting pictures on here because I don't want to mess with photohosting sites personally. And I do pay for upgraded memberships on a few of the forums to do my part to help cover costs that they have. Russ
