1/25 AMT 1966 Mustang GT -- Original Annual & Modified Reissue
vamach1 replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
These appear to be the exhaust trumpets and not the backup lights. On the coupe kit the rear valance has the molded in back up lights which are not a separate piece. As we know the later Monogram kits had the separate chrome backup lights on the 65-66 fastback kits and there wasn’t a separate GT kit . Not sure if this solves the mystery or if it remains unsolved.- 216 replies

I pulled out another “project” box from the shelf and was wondering what became of the original MPC mold of the 1970 body. I can only guess that when MPC did the Stocker kit they forever modified that stock 70 body but still had the 69 fastback body which was reissued as the Streethawk 69 Mustang and that is the kit that is now under the AMT brand that has been reissued many times. So back to this “one year” kit and what makes it a Boss or GT or Mach1 or fastback? In essence it has the Mach1 grille with an incorrect off-center tri-bar Mustang emblem but unlike the AMT version it does not have the Mach1 molded in the rocker panels or the honeycomb rear panel. So is it a Boss 302? Not really as it does not have the correct non-sport lamp grille or Boss 302 engine since the kit has the 289 engine with the Cobra valve covers but it does have the correct plain rear panel for the taillights. So could it be a GT? No as Ford stopped making the GT in 1969 but like the 69 kit this one includes the GT wheels and GT gas cap. It does have the 428CJ engine which of course could have come in any real Mustang except the Boss 302. My thinking on this build (another rescued glue bomb) is to use the Boss 302 engine from the Cougar Eliminator, make a correct grille (no sport lights) and source a dual exhaust system with mufflers. Not sure if I’ll do a shaker hood or not and I’m sure I will notice other differences between a true 69 and 70 Mustang but the goal is to build a fairly decent representation of a 1/25 Boss 302 for both years by using the more common 69 kit for the first year model with off course the appropriate modifications for that year. If anyone is wondering the image with the parts laid out on the brown background was printed from an auction listing image so I would have an idea of what truly came with an original kit. I think it’s time for a nap. ? There will be a quiz later. ?

I still have a few minor things to add (radiator hose) and painting the F O R D on the hood and M U S T A N G on the trunk and perhaps some emblems and exhaust tips. This was a built-up that I took apart and had to get creative with parts from the 68 Shelby kit and 289 engine from a 66 Mustang AMT kit. The color is Dynasty green which was painted from a large spray can that I do not even know how I came to possess it. Thanks for looking. I added a few pictures showing the exhaust tips and side stripes.

Here’s an update 2.5 years later. Obviously I got sidetracked on other projects but this week I pulled out the 70 Mach1 to figure where to take this one. I also have a 69 AMT Mach1 to be built and in the pictures is a Palmer 70 Mustang I decided to do a restoration special and lastly when I looked at the Twister Mach1 I built from another AMT glue bomb I will probably do something similar and swap chassis and I already cut of the front and and rear valences so I can paint the body all as one piece. No telling how long it will take to get this one done but at least I have a plan of sorts. No shortage of spare parts from 69-70 kits so I should have everything I need although I wish the chrome rear taillight panel and bumper for the 70 were in better condition.

Looks great. Did you go with the Boss 302 engine or the 428CJ?

Lyle always takes great photos.

Nice build and the headers looks great. I’m sure there will be a slew of fastbacks being built this year by Ford fans with the revised AMT kit that just came out.

Oh yes Gary will build a car and it will be awesome. In the mean time he will get a laugh (I hope) from the back and forth. -

Good points and as always buyer beware on Ebay. It would take someone that had a spare MPC MKIV kit to complete it since those kits share a lot of common parts including the complete suspension. Even the Hard Castle & McCormick Coyote would probably suffice as a donor kit but I would have to dig mine out to be sure. The clear body of the J-car kit is the one thing that has never been copied or reissued so seeing just that for sale is unusual. If someone is serious about buying this one on Ebay I probably have all the “missing” parts they would need for trade. I have no connection with the Ebay seller. -

I would have bought it if I had not built one already. -

Cool idea. This is what Foose should have built. -

Great start on a kit that you rarely see built due to how scarce they are. -
Very nice job on a finicky kit. The color looks spot on and the finish is perfect.

Beautiful paint and detailing.

1/25 AMT 1966 Mustang GT -- Original Annual & Modified Reissue
vamach1 replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I pretty much assumed that will never happen (a new chassis) but I remember in the 1980’s trying to do a 65 Shelby GT350 version with the AMT coupe kit and a resin “roof” and a vacuum formed interior, but the stock 289 exhaust manifolds just did not cut it. At least I was not stuck with the promo based molded in single exhaust and I scratch built the side exhaust.- 216 replies

If there is a Shelby version they need to come up with a good set of headers. It just does not look right with the tired old 260/289 engine that has not changed in 60 years. A Shelby oil pan would be cool too.- 216 replies

Looks great. -
You can always redo the decals with a set from Indycals or Starfighter.
-
The body stying differences between 97 and 99 are distinctive (hood, side scoops, taillights) so the engine may be the easy part.
-
Sadly no 1999-2004 GT or Saleens, 2003-2004 Cobras or 2003-2004 Mach1 kits were made. For whatever reason the model companies just abandoned Mustang kits until the 2005 Models came out which IMHO were not as cool. The 1998 Super Stallion would not be of much help to make a stock GT.

Check the Model car Mustangs page on Facebook. I’ve seen some conversions done but not sure if anyone is selling any 3D parts yet. I have a 2003 Cobra and of course there is no model kit made, just 1/18 diecast but not in my color either.
