Nice work Crazyjim. I just bought this kit to complete a hole in my Mustang collection and I am torn whether to replicate the original paint scheme or perhaps use a couple different cans of the Testors color shift spray bombs. You might notice in the background I went with the “factory” color scheme for the 81 McClaren Mustang that I’m working on. It’s interesting that the McClaren was a sneak peek of the 84 SVO Mustang and the 99 Super Stallion had many of features that would end up in the 2003-2004 Cobras.

I did not realize that. Perhaps a moderator can move it to the correct category. Thanks. -
I’d buy a diecast if they were in 1/24 or 1/25 scale and not too expensive. This is a 1/18 diecast that is about $280. I did score a 1/18 yellow Pantera back when Hotwheels made them and ToysRus had them for $20.

Nice score and great build. It’s on my unicorn kit list as I rarely see them for sale. Yes a 1/24 scale version would is on my wish list not expecting an engine of course like the Nakamura kit release in 1978. Not sure if the highly detailed SMP kit is still available but you would think with as low as the Yen is that the price would have come down a lot.

Looks sharp and the color suits it well. I have the several variations of this kit (fastback and GT350) and they were easy builds although I like to paint the entire body with the front and back pieces all as one “part.” Most of my kits and spares are in storage and if you are not in a hurry I can probably did out the side scoop from one of my spare parts boxes.

No cammers factory installed or by AO Smith despite the urban legends and just one prototype with a 427 side oiler that would have cost more than a 427 Cobra.

Nice color choice. it reminds of the first one I built back in the 70’s and I even painted the interior red before I knew more about Mustangs and Shelbys and the more limited factory exterior and interior color choices. The cammer motor was AMTs choice as they wanted the builder to have the option of building a weekend drag car. I think after the one-off 427 1967 GT500 Super Snake, Ford realized the cost of the racing engines was too prohibitive and frankly dangerous in a street pony car. That is what makes modeling great - you can build what someone may have built in a garage or race shop sometimes without even having to scrounge parts from another kit.

Thanks JC. Welcome back. -
Fantastic build. I don’t know how you keep cranking them out week after week.

We dodged the worst in Miami but some areas within 20 miles had some tornado damage and typical flooding. Several small planes were flipped over and damaged at North Perry airport yesterday. Many offices and schools are closed today. Be safe my fellow Floridians. Update: 4:30pm and we are getting the last of the rain from the outer bands coming through now.

Lots of ho hum cars were sold for basic transportation but this does automatically translate to model kit sales. At the time there were probably good sales of Pintos and Vegas and K-cars other econobox cars but assuming that 99% of them are no longer on the roads what person under 30 will even know what one is much less say wow I need to pay $30 for that kit. While the Electric SUV is more pleasant looking from a stying point and the demand for them shows they are desirable as a practical full size vehicle, I believe the demand for a kit (glue or snap) would be minimal. I think most of us modelers fall into the trap of wanting what is NOT available and assuming enough others would want the same thing to make it viable from a profitability standpoint. -
Don’t try to slip a GT40 drivetrain in the Lotus. I double dog dare you. ?

No disagreement there but how many mid 70’s to 80’s “family” cars do you see on the road or for sale? Cars got really boring and slow and were still gas guzzlers. By now those cars should be old enough to be cool now but I see a lot of older imports of that era than I do American cars that are in junk yards or have been destroyed. Even 3-4 years heads turn when they see and hear and older muscle car but a silent electric vehicle would pass by without a glance. -

Cool cars have been and still are are Lambos, Mustangs, Ferraris, McClarens, Corvettes, Camaros etc. Yes what kid is going to get excited about cars 60 to 100 years old but I also cannot see a ten year old getting excited about a Mach E SUV model. If you were in your teens in the 80’s who was clamoring for a Minivan kit ?. While Tesla cars are very popular I’ve yet too see a model cart of one. Sure they are cool from a technology standpoint but they are sedans meant to get you from point A to B and the styling to me is an after thought. -

No and No for any other SUV type vehicle regardless of brand and power (gas, diesel or electric). It would just be a BORING kit. -

Thanks for the very details Ed post and the problems you encounter and how you overcame them. -
Nice build. For better or worse AMT did not modify the body of the kit for this issue so needless to say the car as raced had body modifications. The chassis goes back to the 68 Shelby GT500 kit and AMT “added” a section to lengthen it to fit the 71-73 kits. I’ve have one in progress I need to finish and you’re right about the paint scheme which was no fun.
