STEVE SCOTT ,A.KA . [ UNCERTAIN T ]
jbwelda replied to bpletcher55's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I was wondering about that myself the other day; I haven't received any communication in a long time. its a carpshoot anyhow, and I don't know how I can realistically expect to actually get an uncertain T out of this. to me it is just a gamble on long odds. jb -
that's an excellent start, great detail, really makes me want to look at my kit now. jb

Old Monogram Parts Restored ?
jbwelda replied to Pete L.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
ooooh a "loose cannon" am I? how dare I belittle or question some known "insider" on what is "FACT". that's the funniest damm thing I have read here, ever. now explain how, if Revell "sold their remaining supply of Blue Bandido's to a dealer", how you can order the kit direct from Revell as evidenced by the very web page (their official web page) that this "loose cannon" pointed out. that just doesn't seem to jive with the story being put forth here. none of what has been relayed here seems to be "FACT" when viewed in the objective light of day. I can guess all kinds of scenerios about what someone "heard" and how it could get twisted around but really, who cares. the plain facts dispute the rumors, that's all I need to know. and just remember this when the kit is still available from the source a year from now. at that point I will accept some apologies that I am sure will not be forthcoming. I am sorry for questioning the veracity of these insiders publicly, which you seem to take as some sort of crime against model-dom, but when my BS meter starts pegging I tend to say something about it, and this seems to be just one such case. and "insiders" spreading rumors they cannot back up by anything other than hearsay do not give this board credibility, people buying, building and reporting on actual fact do. >I was told that we won't see that one, I'm assuming the Blue Bandido or Blue Beetle again. I assume a lot of things too...its just that I don't repeat them as gospel until there is something more than an ass of you and me to be made of it. jb -
Monogram Orange Hauler - Wheels and Tires

I don't have any of these kits right at hand but any chance the wheels from the recent Blue Bandito are close? I my fading memory I seem to remember them being. jb -
TDR Innovations on Shapeways
jbwelda replied to Quick GMC's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
that's what they recommended you do with their old sand cast 1/8 scale stuff I have. one problem: you have to basically bury the detail in the stuff to get it smooth, either that or remove it during the smoothing process. so a lot of it was what I would refer to as "false detail", in that yeah its detailed but youre going to either have to be very careful with some very tedious sanding (a LOT of very tedious sanding in 1/8 scale) or remove the detail and then later replace it with your own detail or do without. looks like the new stuff is miles ahead of that though because to be honest, in 1/24 scale, the roughness would overtake the part, and it looks like the parts illustrated above at least can be worked with. jb -

thanks for the pics Matthijs, I would really like to see them with a coat of primer on them, but I can see from your pics the finish has improved greatly. looks though like those pipes needs some cleanup of their surface to be smooth. jb -
Old Monogram Parts Restored ?
jbwelda replied to Pete L.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
ps to my above post: around where I live, seems like its pretty hard to find a donut for less than a dollar, so that wager is kind of a hidden trick. and let me be clear: I am not advocating anyone leave here (unlike some others here might), I am just agreeing that if its time, its time. not my decision except where it applies to me. edit to add something germane to the original point, the blue bandito seems to be currently in production and available according to the Revell/Monogram website: http://www.revell.com/model-kits/cars/85-4020.html#.VQ3u-IwtHIU so any talk of it not being reissued is completely premature and if you ask me, its likely they have or will have ongoing production of it to keep it in their catalogue. if it is listed as no longer available somewhere, I would like to see where. see, THAT would be proof, not rumor. but it did not seem to be forthcoming and that's what I am talking about. jb -

>I do see why 99% of the other folks that work in the hobby have left all forums.......looks like my time is near too. aw did I hurt your feelings by being unkind in my comments? or questioning your all knowing all seeing being? grow up, and if its really your time, don't let the door hit you in the ass. and you heard it second hand from Dave Model King...and that's not rumor? then I don't know what is. its pretty much the definition of a rumor in my book. all I am doing is keeping it real. and I would be willing to bet dollars to donuts that the blue bandito/beetle reappears again, soon, like in the next year or two. jb -
Testors Metalizer paints,,have questions.
jbwelda replied to gtx6970's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
the thing no one has mentioned is that the metalizer buffing stuff is only sort of paint. what I mean is it seems to have metal particle sludge mixed with it, so that the paint part dries out and off leaving a kind of grainy surface. its that surface you "polish" or "buff" but seems to me what youre doing is spreading the sludge around on the surface of the paint base it was contained in, and then that stuff gives you the "metal" look and sheen, particularly, in my experience, the aluminum plate color. that's why when you clear coat it it goes to a bad metallic look...you have messed up the surface effect and probably mixed it with the clear overcoat, and its also why it handles so poorly: you remove that buffed top coat, that never really "dries", and get down to the metal color base very easily. I find all this to be true with my using metalizer. and if you wipe your finger across the unsealed top coat, even after a year, you will leave a streak in the finish and your finger will have silverish particles on it where it wiped off the top "metalized" part. so it creates a real problem, I would say always use cotton gloves when handling because then at least you are more or less just polishing the surface, and don't wash or apply decals or really much of anything without sealing directly below where you are applying them. it is a very very delicate finish and I have wiped down to the base way too many times to really try a large area metal finish like that Challenger there (I remember that great build by the way, very impressive and I thought it would never get done from the complexity and from the surface mods and finish that you were trying to achieve, Bill) jb -

>I got the Nelson twin turbo setup. how is the finish on this stuff in 1/24? I am currently working on some of their older stuff, in that "sand cast" finish and even for 1/8 scale its pretty rough and requires quite a bit of labor to get it near smooth. so I am hesitant about ordering a bunch more stuff until maybe I know more about their state of the art nowadays. what I want to know basically is are the 1/24 parts basically ready to use, with maybe some minimal flash cleanup, or do they require more work than that to get a semi- smooth realistic finish? thanks and any photos would be appreciated. jb -
Defective Testors spray
jbwelda replied to TonyK's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
never had a problem with Tamiya clear and decals. Testors clear, on the other hand... but I think that's mostly on the decals, and/or a heavy hand on the application. > There are so many other alternatives out there. actually, not really. for instance name a good flat coat in a spray can that won't bother lacquers, enamels or acrylics, given it being applied properly. I can't think of one. jb -
I like those night race parts that are included. some killer lights. jb

1/25 Revell '72 Porsche 914/6 2'n1
jbwelda replied to unclescott58's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I have the transkit and its totally rad. can I ask, JC, what is holding the back of your buildup up in the air? I would like to have it sit lower than that. did you make that stance on purpose or could you share whats keeping it from settling down a little more? thanks and I am looking forward to building it up, so much in fact that I am not that excited about this Revell reissue even though I have tried to buy an earlier one on ebay for some time now without luck. the resin one just looks so much better. jb -
Defective Testors spray
jbwelda replied to TonyK's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I too definitely favor Tamiya spray cans, but I still use some testors on occasion, like their dullcote, wet look clear, and lately a couple of cans of the one coat lacquer color coat. and I have found that just recently, like in the past 3 months, almost every can I buy and use has a defective or somehow easily plugged nozzle. almost every one, that's not a lot but probably at least 4 separate cans. and like the OP said, on most of them the paint would just kind of drizzle out of the nozzle base and I wouldn't notice it until it was all over my hands (wear gloves actually so it was on the gloves) and dripping down into my lap. if not that, then the paint would come out in spurts, even with a brand new can, and get worse from that point. heres a photo of what I mean, the dullcoat on top of Tamiya burgundy, and I thought it was that I was sloppy with spraying it, so I went back and reshot it, with the same can probably, and it just shifted the spots around because the nozzle was spitting paint out. this stuff used to go on smooth and dry up nice and flat (physically and in tone) and now it seems at least the can I bought doesn't want to work. too bad one cannot adapt Tamiya nozzle to the Testors can. one love jb -
Tamiya Mercedes 300SL Announced, new pics added to OP
jbwelda replied to martinfan5's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
i was going to say the expectation of an opening trunk possibly comes from the fact that the AMT version had one. that was actually one of the highlights of that model if i recall correctly because it was very well detailed compared to the average AMT stuff of the time. but its true about Tamiya: if there is any consistent complaint it might be the curbside nature of many of their excellent kits. highly detailed underneath but nothing up above under the hood. so in that light it is very commendable they are going whole hog with the engine and chassis detail. and that clear floor...which might actually make it make sense to detail the trunk area without opening the trunk lid. hmmmm. jb -

>The closer I look at this kit, the more excellent it appears to be. and you are surprised? remember this is Tamiya not Revell or AMT we are discussing here. jb -
nice work on that transmission and crucial attention to detail! jb

nice build and that candy red really has a warm look to it. jb

this kit is derived from the old Little T, right? sure looks like it especially the front end (outside of the wheels/tires) nice build, I would finish it up! jb

Suppose there's an IRS under there?
jbwelda replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
you think that beater hot rod has a jag IRS under it? I don't. why do they do that? because they can and because it bugs you. jb
