Big Rig Exhaust System, Help Needed
10thumbs replied to 10thumbs's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hi Jarda, I've seen those too. I even thought about making those, but there's not much room underneath. Here my project, these pics are new. The 1st exhaust segment; Jarda, I think you mean this, marked in red; I've seen pics where just a somewhat larger pipe is positioned there. Actually, there is room, for simplification, maybe I'll do without them. NEW QUESTION: Guys, with big stacks, like 10"ers , how, or where do they meet the smaller 5" standard pipes coming from the motor? I checked out some shops with aftermarket custom parts, and they offer a funnel shaped reducer-elbow. I think I've seen too, that the smaller 5" pipes just seem to run up into the fatter stack pipes, without an elbow making the union of the two different sized pipes. Any thoughts, or even pics? Here the size difference on my project; Left the scale 5" pipes, right the fat, scale 10" stack; So, I think I've seen the 5" pipes just bent upwards (with elbows) then the 10" stack just slipped over, no funnel or elbow attached. Am I right? How would you do it? Does there have to be a "perfect and closed" connection for the two different sizes, or can they be just so that one runs into the other? Whatcha think? -
Big Rig Exhaust System, Help Needed

Thanks for the insight. I'll try and remember. Just the way I want my model to be, is fairly similar to the way it is in real. Hence, my query here. I don't have a clue about about mufflers on big rig Diesel motors. I asked, now I have a real idea about the way it is. The good part is, I don't have to build a muffler. Hey, mufflers suck when you want to run straight pipes. Straight pipes it is. -
What kind of builder are you?

A real nice theme Bill, I like the look, although not knowing much about the details for the class. Fits for me the category "outrageous" and I like it. I love the drag Fiats, completely ridiculous and so cool. Good that you're doing one. -
Hello Sam, good that you joined our forum. We can all learn here, just ask. It seems you're on the right track for starters, in a little while you'll be amazed with what a few details can make out of a model car.

Welcome to the forum Lee. Great to have a new truck builder with us.

On a side note, would the cars get lesser rating if the driver did not hang his arm out the window? This is for sure an American thing, makes me grin. I've been living in Europe so long (no one does it over here) it's become strange for me to see. One more thing comes to mind. The 2 dudes in the background carrying a little extra weight....guys, are all Americans carrying such a belly nowadays?

I agree with all of the above, some of you guys really hit it right in my opinion. It's all in fun and we do what pleases us. When things get tight and uneasy during a build, then I'm going down the wrong path. I like using and making small metal parts , because it's something I've been doing for a living now for more than 40 years. But when it comes to gluing styrene, like in the finishing phases of a build, I always mess something up, usually glass or something slips and glue gets on a finished painted body or fender, always. I get the shakes big time, 'cause it's new to me. So, I see myself as a beginner, an intermediate, and an expert. Just depends on what's up next on the bench. Every build though, lets me learn something new, and lots of truckers here have helped me along the way! -
Big Rig Exhaust System, Help Needed
10thumbs replied to 10thumbs's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks for the info Matthew. I'm a big fan of a little real metal on our models, those pipes will make for an outstanding build. I worked a little last night on the exhaust system, the pipes from the motor out to the back are done. Next the elbows on up to the big fat stacks. Also, some trial glossy polishing of the aluminum stacks....oh yeah, they're cookin' now! -

Hi Matthew, thanks for the info, I read you loud and clear. Read, no mufflers on my project. It gets 10" stacks too. edit: PS: Those fat stacks on the last pic look right! -

Thanks Rich, this rig will have real fat stacks. So I can do without the mufflers, huh? -
Well now look at this! Excellent. Ray it looks like that piece can soon be bolted on and driven off. Your progress is commendable. Question: I know there are different levels of hardness in aluminum. Do you use a milling oil with the bits you're using? I suppose they're carbide burs, I thought about after viewing a few previous pics earlier and the shavings that were mounting up. The shavings looked dry, hence the discussion about a suction setup to keep the piece clean. The working life of those expensive cutters/burs could be greatly extended with the use of a milling oil. The stuff is cheap. You won't have any metal dust either. Just gunk, that can be slid off the table with a funky brush. No dusty metal flying around either, better for the eyes. Please excuse my butting in, even a cheap mineral oil would help as long as the rpm's aren't too high. Smells clean too. Heck, you could even take a swig before applying the oil to the bur and object. It's healthy.

Thanks Sam, I really like what you did with those lines out back. -
OK guys, here's one that'll probably make you laugh. Do the big diesels have mufflers hooked up? I've seen YouTube vids of big rigs with "straight pipes", are these w/o mufflers? I'm with the exhaust pipes on my project, and the kit pipes on a 359 don't appear to have mufflers. Can I add fat stacks and have no mufflers for a custom truck?

Sam that really looks great! I love the plumbing. What kind of wires did you use for the lines? Telephone material? I recently tried some wires form a PC, but the choice was not good, as they were not very pliable. Yours look really good! -

Just excellent modelling, a wonderful opportunity to learn and to enjoy viewing. -
75 Years! I like reading threads like this one. My Hobby Shop here in Germany has been around now for 75 years. Read before WW2. Their shop is a little smaller than it was some 30 years ago, when I bought my first wooden ship kit. They still have premium property downtown, here in the state capitol. I shop there as often as I can, they have a lot of experience. Personally, I'd prefer buying from them instead of online, the prices are not too much different. Just they have no contact with US stuff, but still a neat place to visit.

Which Model Gave You a Whoopin'?
10thumbs replied to 10thumbs's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Looking back, I faintly remember having trouble with a 57 Chevy. It was probably the Revell kit. Lots of parts and motor options. Did the doors open on that one? Anyway, I'll add the 57 to my list as well. I have another one too. There was a real cool Jaguar XKE Roadster that I remember flubbing up. I think it was finished, but the doors and tilting hood did not fit well and the I think too there were suspension issues, any way it was a mess as I remember. -

Jesse, that's the one. That model was way over my head back when it came out. Still a cool model though, I think someone built it here recently. Good luck, you'll get it right!
