Do You Create A Backstory For Your Builds?
GLMFAA1 replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When you build fire apparatus it is either a replica of real apparatus with a history of itself or it's a piece that fits into your fictional fire department. greg -
speedy recovery there Slusher. When I had mine removed I was in braces, next day off to South Bend and Notre Dame Vs Air Force. No problems except almost being landed on by the Falcon. greg

What was the last actual AMT kit issued?
GLMFAA1 replied to Monty's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Bringing this topic back up, I researched through an unnamed source of what transpired at AMT in 1977/78. Unionized workers were in negotiations and a strike was imposed in April. The corporation settled with the employees and moved operations to Baltimore Maryland and Warren Michigan. Lesney bought AMT when it was in Baltimore later selling it off to Ertl. In January of 1978 the projects in development were the Garwood garbage truck and Tyrone Malone's Super Boss. The production in 1978 were the GMC General in February, the VW Rabbit in March, the 1/16th scale 55 T-Bird in June and the Budweiser 8 horse hitch wagon in June. The Subaru Brat was the first production under the AMT/Lesney banner out of Baltimore. I hope this clears up some of the fog about this topic. greg -
2021 Pierce Ascendent Tower
GLMFAA1 replied to Chariots of Fire's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Aaron if you haven't heard the rest of the story as Paul Harvey would say. Years ago Pierce had a huge order from a middle east country and Doug Ogilivie the president of Pierce saw that the apparatus coming off the line had no real badging signifying that the apparatus was made in the USA. He had them attach the USA great seal badges to all the apparatus and the tradition continues to this day. I'm sure his patriotism was deep for he flew 42 missions in WWII. greg -

A quote from Carl Sagan: “First rule in government spending: Why build one, when you can have two at twice the price?” Another Charlie's Rolex from a Timex. greg -

I think next year Model car mag needs to hold a 'Super Build' during the so called other game. You get 1 hour (4 quarters) to build a model car/truck with or without paint. 6 points for each completed step. ie. engine, interior, chassis, finish, decals and display. Extra points for following instructions step by step. greg

Ambulances would have either an interior hand held spotlight or a pillar mounted exterior spot that might have been double sided with a red flasher on one side and spot on the other. Would have had a roof mounted one at the rear to illuminate the loading area. If I'm not mistaken the snow tires are off the MPC Jeep kits. greg

Fire investigation unit

Lesson from the master. Fantastic! greg -
Why not DIY? AMT van kit, Evergreen Sheet stock, quarter rounds for roof edge. Who knows what's on other side for access. Rear could be anything from a roll up door, two swing out doors or even a ramp door. Getting dimensions off of photo use the headlamp as a 6 inch guide for width and height measurements. Looks like a 15 inch wheel that you could estimate length of truck. greg

Fire investigation unit

That grille is similar to a Wheeled Coach. Probably a Johnny Lightning Coke van as donor mold master. Don't know of WC putting deck plate on roof it seems it would make it even more top heavy than they were. greg -
I'm somewhat out of my realm. Building a 2003 Anniversary Corvette. I have the 1998 pace car kit. Now big question I have seen while searching references that some have a body seam on the side coming from the scoop and fading in the back and then some plan sided which one would be the anniversary? Would I be better off getting the snap 2005 kit? Does any one make the anniversary emblems or detail set (wheels) for the Corvette? greg

The company was Miller Meteor. When I started in ambulance work the company had conversion hearses. The hearse consisted of the side panels that went on with knurled screws and clips, the casket rollers were in the floor some had removable casket rollers. electronic siren control head (Federal PA 20s) were kept under the dash along with the Motrac radio and light switch. To make an ambulance you removed the side panels, placed carpet in the back. The cot bar was always in the unit. you put the casket stop in the floor trunk. put in a cot, first aid equipment, and we used Federal TwinSonics that fastened to the gutters above the windows and had plugs for the lights and the siren speakers (converted trailer connection). Unfold the jump seat. You had your city map on the seat and billing sheets and you were ready to go. If anyone is interested in real hearses and ambulance a good reference is the Professional Car Society .https://professionalcarsociety.org/ greg

Nice glass case, In this economy keep an eye out for store closings as they will be selling the fixtures to gain some cash. Drug stores have fine pharmaceutical shelving that fit models well. I have acquired shelving from a drug store chain, WalMart, Bed Bath & Beyond,a gunsmith, and even a school library. Drug store shelving Display case when WalMart remodeled jewelry department. greg
