Nick, Kevin is trying to tell you what he learned the hard way. All of us want to see this forum and hobby thrive and we must be willing to accept some praise and criticism. Two things to remember: 1. An email or post is a one-way conversation that can be hard to understand at times. Take a breath, read and re-read a post before hitting reply. 2. Concentrate on your building and the critics will look for someone else to pick on. Hang in there, the skills will come with time and practice.

Forgiveness or Permission
mikemodeler replied to justin2020's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
my wife is not always happy about my purchases but she knows I am not sitting on a bar stool wasting money either. While the hobby can get to be expensive, I try to justify my purchases (at least in my mind I needed that '32 5 window!) to her. She does get mad sometimes but at the end of the day she realizes there are worse things to spend our money on. Enjoy it! -
I'm off to be all I can be....
mikemodeler replied to LVZ2881's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
James, Be safe and follow the advice others here have given. Ft. Jackson is not a bad place, unless we get some hot weather, but then again you are from Las Vegas! There is a thing called humidity here that will make 85 degrees here feel warmer than 105 in LV, but you will get used to it. My son is 16 and in the JROTC program at high school and will probably be in the military within 3 years. He gets to go to Camp Lejeune this summer for 1 week of boot camp so he can get a taste of life as a Marine and I think it will make him appreciate life a lot more. Best of luck, take care and keep your head down! Thank you for your service. -
Kits We'll NEVER See Re-issued?
mikemodeler replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There are some that have been modified into other kits and therefore unlikely to be re-issued. Case in point, the old MPC Dodge pickup kits from the '70's, they were transformed into the Monster trucks and supposedly can't be returned to their former glory. There was some thought that The Model King was going to fix the molds but the cost was going to be pretty high. Not sure with Round 2 in charge if they will bring them back but I would definitely buy 6, as would many others here. It sure would be nice to have some of the old MPC kits from the '70's & '80's but most of them have been updated over the years so they probably are long gone. I agree, unless the molds have been lost or severely damaged, I can't say "Never" ! -
sounds sweet, can't wait to see pictures!

MCM April #149
mikemodeler replied to RodBurNeR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I got mine last Friday or Saturday and I gotta admit, it has kept me reading it over and over! There is a ton of info that is holding my interest. Of course I did find the April Fool jokes funny but there were several articles that I think tell more about our hobby and the folks in it that make the magazine a keeper. I was disappointed that the magazine was late but I think Gregg & Company made up for it with all that I found in it. -
Revell price drop???
mikemodeler replied to LVZ2881's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not to mention that the price of oil is creeping back up again, almost double of what it was a year ago. Could it be they tried to set the MSRP artificially higher so the discounts could be taken, giving the illusion that we were getting a "deal" ? Na, that sounds like a used car sales trick to me ! -
Thread for Ideas for New Topics/Categories
mikemodeler replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry, I think you have it thought out and it should cover it. I would like to see a category for drama, seems like that is the only one missing! -
nice to see her hard work pay off! That is a very good looking model and I happen to like those Revell snappers! I took my 12 year old daughter to a hobby shop a week ago for a 90 minute "How to build better models" seminar and she enjoyed herself. Of course she wanted me to buy a few kits and we did. Now that some of the craziness of the last few weeks is over I think she and I will be in the garage spray painting and then building them! My 16 year old son has never showed as much interest in cars as he did planes but at least we could build something together. Now he is all involved in school and his ROTC unit so his kits are boxed up. His buddies stop by and ask if HE is building the models and when he tells them it is ME, they think it is kinda cool! I usually find a gearhead amongst the group and they start drooling over the stash in the garage( if they only knew about the other 200 kits boxed up!). Keep her building, it makes for some great father/daughter time and before you know it boys will take your place!

You didn't mention where in Southern Wisconsin you were going to be, but if you have time on your hands, there was a hobby shop in Racine called Gary's Hobbies. It catered mostly to R/C but was a great source for paints & supplies, although their prices tend to run a little higher. Not sure if it is finally closed, but in Kenosha was Don's Hobbies. Don was a great guy and had a ton of old kits and unlike some stores, did not re-price them up as they were discontinued by the manufacturers. He was scheduled to close last Christmas but might still be there if he couldn't sell his building. Another thing to check out is Hobby Lobby. They haven't made it to the west coast but for those of us that have them, it sometimes is the closest thing to a hobby shop we have. Do a Google search and use the store locator to find a store near where you will be. They allow you to print off coupons and use them in the store (if they are running a coupon that week, otherwise they will run them on sale, like this week at 30% off. They sometimes run a little behind in getting new releases but they are a viable source for kits. They might even have some clearance kits! The comments about Happy Hobby, Model Empire and Greenfield News & Hobby are spot on. I never knew how much I would miss them after I moved from the area 5 years ago! I try to make it to them when I go back and yes, I have shipped kits back! If you can ship them via the post office, you will save yourself some money over UPS or FedEx. Enjoy and let us know what you bring home!

Revell Fall 2010 releases
mikemodeler replied to Luc Janssens's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Looks like I better start finding new hiding spots for some more kits that I don't want the wife to find! That Cutlass looks like it will have the uptop that some folks complained about, I guess that Revell IS listening to and watching the modelers. Sure wish they would find a way to tool up a new pickup- F Series preferrably. Now, I wonder what Round 2 will bring us????????? -
Just got my latest issue............
mikemodeler replied to mikemodeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry- scroll up and re-read this thread from the beginning, please. I merely stated that the new SA was out, I thought it was great, and was hopeful that the next MCM would be as well. I did not take a swipe at you or Gregg or trash MCM in any way (IMO). I did not mention ANY articles or items that are in the other magazine, seems you and a few others sidetracked this topic into that area. I cannot fathom how this has become such a touchy subject, except that YOU have a problem with it. Good Night! -
Just got my latest issue............
mikemodeler replied to mikemodeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I guess it is true, that an email or post on a forum is really a one-way message! My original post was not meant to start an arguement, it was merely to say that I am hoping that the next issue of MCM is near and has as much useful (IMO) information as that "other" magazine. Gregg is kind enough to have this forum for us and I appreciate being able to be a part of it, just like the other forums I frequent. If I was ticked off about the delays in MCM's issues, why would I continue to renew my subscription? I have been a subscriber to the mag from it's earliest days and I believe I was among the first 100 people here on this forum. I guess I will lay low and not comment here for awhile. I didn't realize how inflammatory my comments were going to be interpreted, I did try to keep it to a model related topic. -

Just got my latest issue............
mikemodeler replied to mikemodeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Just keeping it model car related! Seriously though, I am anxious to see the latest MCM, I have been jonesing for some reading materials and like the contrasts between the two magazines. -
Harry, I think the place you are looking for is Earl Schieb ! "I'll paint any car for $49.95!" .......of course that was around 1970, IIRC ! Seriously, you might be able to find a body shop close to home that will paint them for you pretty cheap. Something like a mirror is easy and there is usually very little work needed to prep and paint them.

Nice model there, regardless of the age, it shows that he has learned the patience and skill needed to build a clean model. That appears to be the nice Lindberg '66 Chevelle kit.

the worst made cars on the road.........
mikemodeler replied to B_rad88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The comments about maintenance versus repair had me chuckling and remembering my days working for car dealers. When I was in High School (30 years ago) I worked at a Mercedes/BMW/Alfa/Peugeot/Chrysler dealer in the Chicago suburbs (what a combo of makes, I know!). The difference in how the owners approached their vehicles was astounding, even within a given make. Some owners thought that their cars were an investment (and took excellent care of the car) and others viewed them as something to get around town in. In 1980, the top of the line Mercedes was $40,000 and to see some people trash one made me wonder how they could do so?! I guess when you have more money than sense you can afford to do it. In regards to the Aveo/Colorado, I work for NAPA and come across these vehicles everyday and to hear some tell it, they are either "great cars/trucks" or "the biggest pieces of junk". I think it has more to do with who is driving them and how they are maintained. I know that the S-10 pickups they had were abused pretty hard and seemed to hold up fairly well all things considered. They usually drive them for 150,000 miles (which, like dog years is really more than a normal time span)or 6-7 years and at the end you can expect to get a great deal but have something that needs repairs, has dents and ripped seats. As long as there are vehicles being built, there will always be a worst and best list. -
Duplacolor...5 oz cans
mikemodeler replied to MikeMc's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I would think the real reason the varied colors are being eliminated and replaced by the general colors has to do with sales. If the smaller cans are not selling and the larger ones will, along with less shelf space required to stock fewer skus, then it makes sense to stock the larger cans. Spray paint is no different than any other item on the shelf in a retail environment-stock what sells! Most NAPA stores (and probably Carquest) can order a can of Dupli-color spray paint in the smaller factory color cans. All you have to do is ask them to, they usually have it in stock at the NAPA warehouse so it is only a day or two away. Also keep in mind that not as many folks touch up their cars anymore since the clear coat finishes became the norm, something about the extra steps seems to scare most of them. There could also be the issue of shoplifting, local ordinances banning spray paint, changes in company policy, etc that has caused the stores to reduce or eliminate the paint. Wal-mart used to have a big selection and now they have almost nothing. -
this just made me giggle.,...

P.T. Barnum once said...."There's a sucker born every minute" and obviously whomever bids on these boxes would fall into that category. If the guy can get the money for them, I guess we should be looking through our collections for old boxes! -
MCM #148 CONTEST ISSUE
mikemodeler replied to RodBurNeR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry, the nice thing about the SA issue is that you have a choice if you want to buy it. Now, I like to see the coverage from model shows around the world, but is it me or does it seems like we see many of the same cars in each mag? Now I know it is hard to not show what SA has shown, but considering theirs was out 6 months ago is it possible to not have as much duplicate coverage? I would rather see a regular issue and choose to buy a contest issue if I want to. The folks as SA might do the contest annual as a revenue generator. Considering this issue is 2 months late, what is the schedule for the next issue? Thanks.
