AMT F4U-1 Corsair
Snake45 replied to unclescott58's topic in All The Rest: Motorcycles, Aviation, Military, Sci-Fi, Figures
Canopy masks for the Tamiya kit wouldn't come close to working on this one. Easiest way to mask the frames would be with strips of masking tape. Mask all the ones going one way first, paint them, then when the paint is dry, remove the tape, mask off the frames going the other way (perpendicular), and paint those. I've done this several times and it works well. -
Very VERY cool! I drove a '65 Special 2DS in high school, so I'll be watching. Drive on!

MPC never did a C2 Vette roadster, but you're right about the rear plate bracket.

"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
He's exactly right. All you have to do is say you're in and you're in--you've already posted the required starting point picture. -
Yes, the Revell '68 kit would be an excellent starting point for your build. Testor has a nice metallic Teal in the little bottle line. I believe this is the old Boyd's Teal and over the right primer would be a good match for '67 Pontiac teal (the darker teal, not the lighter one).

Don't be sorry. I enjoyed seeing (and drooling over) your pics. I just don't need to scroll down through them three or four more times!

It looks badass in the dark gray primer. Outlaw street racer?

I built this one around 1969, though obviously not as the GG. I think I might still have the cutoff body pieces and original decals somewhere in the Snakepit, but wouldn't swear to it in a court of law. It's filthy with dust and in need of a good cleaning and restoration. It's the only rail I've ever built.

Incompetence and the "new normal"...
Snake45 replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Guy didn't pass elementary school arithmetic, did he? If you didn't need five pieces 4 feet square, and you paid by the square footage, you might have made out. He might have charged you for 80 square feet and delivered 100 square feet. -
Street Outlaws, Fastest in America
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well THAT didn't turn out like I'd hoped! It might have been different if Axman hadn't decided to take a couple naps. Still, I was impressed with his performance and hopes he stays with MSO. Dennis Bailey did pretty well considering his engine had 216 passes on it (and probably running on 7 the last couple passes). Back in the 405, it looks like no matter how you shake 'em up, the same cream always rises to the top: Ryan Martin, Daddy Dave, and Chief. Everyone else is just along for the ride. I see next week they start a new series on America's List of 20, featuring the top contenders from OKC, NOLA, Texas, and Memphis. THAT should be interesting! -
Agreed. I've also built their Snapper '63 Corvettes and '70 Chevelle and they build up easily and accurately. Revell's '67 Chevelle SS396 is another good starter kit.

Of course there are the decals. Dunno if these are all the same but the sheet in the '32 Ford SD looks quite nice IF you're a coke fan.

Excellent recap of the rules, except the builds run 3 months (90 days) not 2. Newcomers definitely welcome! -

Couple quick pics of the Skylark. I see the grille/front bumper and rear bumper dislodged and slid down a bit while I was moving it around for pics. Also haven't done the small emblems/nameplates yet. I'll probably end up trying to dry-brush these with silver paint. But it's DONE ENOUGH for BOYD standards! -
My credit card gets another breather this month. Though I might pick up another Ramchargers digger for parts.

Tomorrow, assuming we come up with at least eight people interested in participating. -
As Steve said, Tamiya is the "weapon of choice" of many here. But it's expensive and can be hard to find. Lately I've been having excellent results with Touch N Tone Flat White, Flat Gray, and Flat Black as primer. This is cheap, near-generic spray paint I found in a couple local hardware stores but it works great as a primer. It might actually be the same stuff as the late, lamented Walmart Color Place flat white, gray, and black, which were also excellent primers. I hope you can find it in Canada.

The MPC/AMT '69 Camaro body is inaccurately shaped. So is the '69 Firebird. No build issues but it just doesn't look right. The '67 GTO molds have been modified several times, and are quite worn, requiring much corrective bodywork on the reissued kits. There's no better '67 on the market now. The original 1967 issue kit, before all the mods, wasn't too bad but good luck finding one.

This was one of the kits I specifically had in minds when I was talking to you on HyperScale yesterday. Two others are their '67 GTO and their '69 Firebird. (All three of these are ex-MPC kits.)
