Blue 68 Camaro -- what colour?
Snake45 replied to Matt Bacon's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Good info! Olds Engine Blue is one of my favorite MM colors but I can't buy it locally anymore. But I think Hobby Lobby has that Blue Pearl in the bottles. I'll have to check that out. Thanks much! -
Thomas Hewitt Edward. How can I remember that? I think rounded corners is correct, but I've never noticed the difference. I was recently playing around with putting an MPC '66 hood in an AMT '66 body and was struck by how close they were. They were darn close to straight-up interchangeable. In fact, a less-anal modeler might well use that combination as-is with no modification or adjustment, but being a perfectionist (especially for the project in question), I'll have to tweak it just a tiny little bit.

At some point, maybe around the turn of the century, they changed the formula and the stuff WILL actually dry now. All its other problems remain, though, and you're right about clearcoats often/usually causing it to bleed/run. I still use it for very small emblems and things of that nature, but for the most part, I've completely replaced it with Silver Sharpie, which is superior in every way. And no, I have NOT tried to clearcoat over Silver Sharpie. Have never seen any need, or had any desire, to. It comes right off with rubbing alcohol, so I don't imagine it would stand up to clearcoating well. -
Well, they brought it back for the rare T.H.E. Cat custom '67 issue for some reason, but otherwise, it hasn't been seen since.

Old Kits: To Build / Rebuild or Not
Snake45 replied to gwolf's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've brought some gawdawful backbirths you wouldn't believe back from the dead. It all depends on how rare it is, and how badly you want to do it. Ask Ron Hamilton, or Steven G., or Can-Con, GTX6970--it CAN be done! -
Were there any NASCAR '69 Chargers that weren't 500s? If so, not for long....

When I first "met" Harry, he was using, I believe it was a famous old-time magician named Harry Blackstone. So that's how I always think of him. And of course Dirty Harry was always cool, too.

But doesn't Revell have the rights to Landy? At least they've done several of his cars in recent years.

Interesting. I too am "not a fan" of those goofy '90s wheels, especially the 3-spoke ones. (If anyone really likes those things, get in touch with me--maybe we can work out a trade if you've got spare Keystones, American Torq-Thrusts, or something else cool to trade.)

Very nice! What's the color of the real one? I have a resin one coming someday and don't yet have a color for it in mind, but I really like THAT one!

The other thing that can happen is, your clearcoat can yellow over the years. I did a green '70 Camaro this way back in the '90s. The clearcoat yellowing doesn't show up on the green paint, but the car now looks like all its trim is gold. Sometime soon I'm gonna go over all the "gold" with a Silver Sharpie--either that, or convert the whole car into some kind of Pimpmobile. -
Thanks for the clarifying pics, Brett! Well done! The Revell '63 Snapper coupe has the correct '63 configuration as well.

Clearing over chrome sounds like a good idea, and I played around with it on several builds about 25 years ago. When everything works as advertised, there's no real advantage or appearance improvement to it. When things go wrong, you can screw up an otherwise nice paint job. I have a '69 Charger 500 sentenced to the Shelf of Doom due to this technique. I can't recommend it. -
I haven't seen the new kit so don't know what custom seats you're talking about, but the '90s issue had a set of new custom seats--front and rear--that, as I recall, were pretty darn nice. I seem to remember wanting to build an entire custom '65 Riviera around them. http://public.fotki.com/drasticplasticsmcc/mkiba-build-under-c/amt-instructions/automotive-cars--pi/ford/1951-1960/amt-1957-ford-fairl/12.html#media

I love glue bomb rescue projects of this kind! Drive on! BTW, IMHO, wide whitewalls and Cragars don't go together. Pick one or the other. Which one would depend on which way you're going with the rest of the build.

Old Kits: To Build / Rebuild or Not
Snake45 replied to gwolf's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have a couple rare old kits that I'll never build because I enjoy them too much just the way they are. I also have a couple that I DO plan to build. Now if it's previously built, I have no problem taking it back to bare styrene and starting over, no matter how rare it is. Lately, though, I find that if an old builtup has ANYTHING going for it, I really enjoy restoring it as much as possible, maybe making some improvements but staying more or less true to the OB's vision. So far I've restored a Maverick drag car, two '63 Corvettes, a '67 Corvette, two '68 GTOs, a '74 Charger, a '72 Chevelle, and an Aston-Martin DB4 in this fashion. And am doing a '71 Cuda even as we speak. -

Very, very nice! Clean, simple, different--what's not to like? I've been wanting to do something along these lines for some time now--thanks for the inspiration! -
I'm not a fan of this car but there's no denying that this is an OUTSTANDING build, especially the perfect black paint job!

Maybe the mold's not damaged or missing at all. Maybe this is just a matter of shrinkage! -
Sad Sad Sad News: Our Harry Passed Away
Snake45 replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't think I will ever again put a mirror on a model car--or, for that matter, NOT put one on--and NOT think of Harry. Harry, you left a mark. Which means you did good. See you on the other side, Brother.
