What non-auto model did you get today?
SfanGoch replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
You're lucky. The Goodwill store down the block from me doesn't accept toys, model kits, etc. It only sells these "book" things, dinnerware, furniture and clothing with pre-stained armpits. I got these in the mail yesterday: An original 2001 release of the Polar Lights C-57D Starcruiser in glorious 1/72 scale and an Academy (ex Italeri) 1/48 U-2S -

That De Havilland look like a nice kit. It has a 24' wingspan and is 16.5" long. It's available at De Havilland Dreams. Check out what George Mustafa did with it. -
"They" know that modelers use the stuff. So, what do "they" do? Throw us a curve by changing the dammed name every couple of months so we can't find the stuff. Next thing you know, it'll be relabeled as a pancake/waffle syrup substitute.

The company's still in business at the same address. No Allison engines anymore; but, you'll get $.41/lb. for mongo.

There is no "plain" V-22 with the exception of the pre-production aircraft which has the designation of V-22A. "V-22" is a general designation. The USMC uses MV-22B's, the USN uses CMV-22B's and the USAF uses CV-22B's. All are/have been painted in multi-color schemes since they were accepted for service. Check out Bell-Boeing V-22, paint schemes and more for the various schemes used. Also, here is the instruction sheet for the kit so you can familiarize yourself with the assembly. -
Similar to being an expert on UFO's, the Loch Ness Monster or Sasquatches; although, a girl I went to school with came close to the latter.

I get my inspiration to build a kit from other sources. As far as`I'm concerned, The kit could be packaged inside a plain cardboard box. I also don't make my decision to buy a kit based on box art since I already know what's inside.

There are plenty of releases of the AMT kit to be had at a reasonable price. All it takes to find them is a Google search and sifting through the results.

Both kits build up nicely. I've used the interior parts from the AMT in the Revell Chevelle and they pretty much fit without any issues. The trunk badge on the AMT kit is on the large side but can be replaced with PE from the Model Car Garage set. The radius of the AMT Chevelle's tail light bezels too rounded when compared to the Revell kit. The bezels on the Revell kit are more accurately rendered when compared to the real deal.

Differences between “price point” and “price” This comment nails it: "If I had to guess, I'd say its gratuitous use probably started with conversations between corporate executives and accountants where the term was being used precisely, moving from there to other executives who were at the meeting, didn't understand the term but thought it sounded good and so tried to imitate the people who knew what they were talking about, gradually spreading out into the culture from there. So, yeah, fundamentally people imitating each other to try to sound clever." -
Sure, just use epoxy ( I use Loctite Marine Epoxy) to attach them.

Decals for under hood
SfanGoch replied to HDDan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not any help about getting decals; but, spraying a light coat of Krylon Clear on the decal sheet will prevent old decals from disintegrating when you dip them in water. You'll need to cut the individual decals from the sheet and apply them in the normal manner. -
AMT Buick Oldsmobile Pontiac Reissues

Looks like an entry level pimpmobile. -
A guy at Early Ford V-8 Club Forum says he saw the car and it was a faded maroon which looked purple.

You can get it at CVS or Home Depot. It is now called Pledge Premium Floor Care Multi-Surface Finish.

From MegaHobby: "This model kit does NOT have Caterpillar decals included in the kit. " Looks like R2 doesn't have a licensing agreement with Caterpillar which is why it's no longer listed as a D7.

I experienced the same with Milliput. I switched over to Magic-Sculpt. Apoxie-Sculpt is just as good and both are better than Milliput.

I gotta disagree with that. just like a car modeler who builds different versions of the same car, armor modelers will build multiple versions of their favorite vehicles. Tanks, like the Panzer IV, for example, are available in over 20 main and sub-variants. Ditto with Tiger Is, available in Initial, Early, Mid and Late Production, along with date-specific versions. There are more than a few armor builders at Missing-Lynx, Track-Link, Armorama and other related sites who have built upwards of 15 versions of the Tiger and there are guys who build every conceivable variant of the Sherman; and, there are a lot. Check out R.P. Hunnicutt's "Sherman: A History of the American Medium Tank" and you'll see what I mean. Unless you are a dedicated tread-head, you probably won't notice the differences; but, they're there. I have nine Tigers and eight M1A2 Abrams kits which won't go to waste and I plan on adding to those numbers. Others build multiple versions in order to replicate vehicles assigned to specific units during different time periods and battles. That's especially true of WWII-era German armor. Planes are another story. Depending on the scale, they can take up a lot of space really quickly; so, an aircraft modeler is more selective in his choices.

Need a specific TR4A Rear View mirror
SfanGoch replied to Foxer's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Fabricate it yourself. It's easier than you think. I just made one. I stuck a piece of 5/32" dia. sprue (or, styrene rod of a similar size would be a better choice) into my rotary tool and, using a flat jeweler's file, made a copy using the photo as a reference. I used the file to obtain the contours. It took all of five minutes and it looks like the pictured one. The bezel can be made the same way using a slightly larger piece of sprue or styrene rod. If you use 3/16" rod, you can make the mirror with the bezel attached. Another choice for material is 3/16 aluminum rod, which is soft enough to work with and can be polished.
