Chopped 'n' Dropped Deuce Highboy - Updated 11-28
Spex84 replied to Bernard Kron's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Joe--I see a frame in the pictures, so I guess it's Revell '32! Bernard--this thing is awesome so far. The paint is looking very good, and that's a killer chop. The 1:1 inspiration is an incredible car...I was just flipping through Rodder's Journal at the newsstand yesterday and they have a big feature on it, nice glossy photos. Stunning. I have to laugh though--I had planned a project using an Orange crate body, black paint, with Dow 7 or raw finish Halibrand-style wheels from the Revell '30 coupe kit, and possibly the nailhead from the '29, and it feels like you've beaten me to the punch! Ach, I'll still build it, but it will be different from yours, more of a stripped-and-skeletal theme. -
This is very cool to see! I would definitely suggest making any future models in such a fashion that they can be printed in nested pieces to keep printing area/costs down (similar to the bodies offered by some other vendors like TDR)...and considering how the parts might need to be designed for resin casting. I have been selling a few small bits and pieces on Shapeways recently, but I have not tackled making a body yet--mostly for the reasons Mark has described.

I do wonder at what point prices will become unsustainable. My local source of kits (hardware store with limited selection, but at least they had something!) is no longer carrying model cars...their supplier deemed car kits "too expensive" and cut them out of the catalogue. In their case, the tipping point has been reached and it's game over. I think the Round 2 re-issues are worth it for the awesome tires (a sore point in many of the 70s-90s reissues of the same kits) and fresh decal sheets. But when "worth it" is $45 in Canada, I'm certainly not buying many new kits! Heck, even junk kits on ebay are $40, thanks to the global shipping program that tacks $30 CAD shipping onto every kit. For that, I'd rather support a brick and mortar store...the closest of which is 3 hours drive away. Ollies sounds nice. That's 3000km away, or $320 round trip. I wonder how many kits I could stuff in my luggage.

3D printing growing as we speak

Neato! -
Wow, what a row of beautiful builds!! Spectacular stuff... I like all of them, but the Gulf livery always catches me eye.
-
Ultra clean and classy. Excellent work! I like the paint color choice and subtle detailing, air tank, etc.
-
That's hilarious. Somebody had to try it!! You can tell people it's a model of a VW-based kit car
-
Nicely done! Simple and pure. I really like the stock tires that come with the AMT '29 kit...great sidewalls!
-
Beautiful job! I have never seen anyone use those air cleaners as wheel center caps before. It works!!

I'm a car guy but that tractor is pretty darn cool! Of course, I'd probably try to hot rod it

Anyone know a Bill Stillwagon?

Wow, it was worth it opening this thread just to see that ramp truck. O.O -
The Greased Lightning Ford seems like a no-brainer..they wouldn't have to change much from the previous stock offerings. Nerf bar, chrome reverse wheels from the '49 Mercury, and boom, done. And if it really did need to be "Hydramatic"...they could drop in the Cadillac engine and hydramatic transmission from the '49 Merc kit too. I wonder which it will be... Cool to know that Revell is OK with fixing certain areas on kits sometimes. I'd love for the back of the roof and the quarter windows, visor and window openings to get that treatment on the '30 A coupe!
-
Were those taillights inspired by a 1:1 car or did you just get creative? Because I don't think I've seen that particular solution before, and it really suits the lines of the car! Just when I thought I'd seen every taillight solution on a '40...something cool and unique comes along. Bravo!

K&R Kustoms+Rods 33/36 Coupe -update Halloween
Spex84 replied to Rocking Rodney Rat's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Yep, some incredibly cool ideas happening here. Looking forward to seeing more! The shortened trunk is a neat touch, and I love the re-worked windshield area and lower cowl. Is there any plan for a custom grille insert shape? The vertical slot in the '36 piece somehow doesn't suit the feral attitude of the rest of car IMHO. -
Fiat Mefistofele Black version 1/12

Oh wow. My first thought was "if the model looks as good as this museum exhibit, it will be impressive indeed!" Then I realized I was looking at photos of the model. Stunning work! -
Round2 Kat's Kollection - New Series
Spex84 replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree that it would be nice to have some more contemporary subjects available (ie, RAM trucks) to capitalize on current trends, but Round 2 has a certain business model and I think they're doing a great job of updating and marketing the kits they've purchased the rights to. I may not be a huge fan of every single kit they re-release, but I have to keep in mind that my modeling tastes may evolve, and 20 years from now I might be very glad of the pool of 2010s-era Round 2 kits that will probably still be available on auction sites etc. Recently I picked up the AMT '32 Victoria. I have a vintage example of the kit (that was much cheaper, funny enough) and now I can keep it intact for the sake of collector's nostalgia, and build the new kit instead. I know I've purchased some kits in the past that I thought were kinda garbage (not from Round 2 though!) --but then my tastes evolved a little and I suddenly found creative uses for them. -
The Cube is such a bizarro little car; I enjoy the design immensely. Can't say I've ever seen a built kit of this subject before today! Nice work, it's just cute as a button.
-
Looking good! I bet that extra blank area on the grille is the result of a 3D CAD modeler using a "mirror" or symmetry function without realizing that the part is not, in fact, perfectly symmetrical.

I love the subtle weathering--just enough to make it look like a working truck, without going overboard. -

Looks like a university student's ride I love the junk in the back and the snow tires. Very clean execution of an original concept. Great work and thanks for the pics! -

Beautifully done. Dodge trucks of this era are really growing on me! -
superchargers and turbos
Spex84 replied to Dann Tier's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The "GigaHorse" from Mad Max:Fury Road has twin functional engines, each with a functional blower but fake twin turbos. Looks like a blow-through rig with a hat over dual 4bbl carbs on each blower. It had dual intercoolers...but I'd need to see photos from additional angles to know if the general layout is legit. If you want to see insane engine layouts and combinations, tractor pulling is where it's at! -
This is bold customizing! I like it so far. I'd leave the running boards intact and just blend them in.
-
Thanks everyone! Tim, I'd love to join in, but I'm on the west coast, a mere 2000 miles away RockinRodneyRat--those weathering powders look good;the 'self adhesive' feature in particular interest me. If/when I weather this thing, I'll probably use a homebrew mix of artist's chalks and it will be an experiment of sorts...
