Otaki 1/12 Lamborghini Countach Twin Turbo...Mission Statement
iamsuperdan replied to Dann Tier's topic in WIP: Model Cars
You've got that right. I see a Huracan or a Gallardo, or even an Aventador, and I notice it but I'm not crazy about it. I see a Countach, and I stop in my tracks and stare, just transfixed!- 363 replies

TAT 2018: White Western Star
iamsuperdan replied to iamsuperdan's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks. The kit's decals will not be used at all. I have to figure out how to make decals to go over a dark paint finish. I've done them for lighter finishes, but never for black or grey. This should be on the bench soon. -
Talking to my dad over the weekend, and he mentioned that he wanted to build a replica of the first car they had after moving to Canada. Interesting, as he builds boats and planes, hasn't done a a car in decades. So I'm going to try nad source everything he needs for his birthday. From what I can tell a 1962 Biscayne 2-door has never been kitted. I've done some searching, and other than the now defunct Modelhaus, I haven't been able to find a seller, except for some EBay guys. Does anyone know of a source for a resin Biscayne? And if so, what kit would be used as the base? I'm thinking the Revell 62 Impala. THanks! Dan

Otaki 1/12 Lamborghini Countach Twin Turbo...Mission Statement
iamsuperdan replied to Dann Tier's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Wow. I've been blown away by all of your builds. This will be more of the same! Picture a twin turbo Countach. The standard car wasn't exactly known for being reliable. Imagine what adding turbos would do. Maybe you should scratchbuild a tow truck to go with it!- 363 replies

Gotta pay to play but OUCH
iamsuperdan replied to HomerS's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Substitute good for "reliable," and you have a Bugatti. Plain and simple, ease of maintenance was not a design parameter or consideration for this car. It was designed for maximum performance and reliability, darn the costs. And the ultra-rich people who Bugatti cater to really don't give a hoot about maintenance costs. If the folks at VW said that the Bugatti had to be able to do everything it does, and be easily and cheaply serviceable, I'd bet they'd still be working on the design. It's big difference from this car, that was designed with purpose, to say a mid-90s GM. Those cars were given a look, then the engineers were told to make everything fit and work. Which is why you need to remove washer fluid tanks and engine compartment cross braces to change a battery, or remove an upper engine mount and move the engine just to get to one bank of spark plugs on the V6. Or unbolt body panels to change a battery on a C3 Vette. At least a Bugatti was designed with purpose. Now everyone just relax and calm down. How did Richard Pryor put it? Have a Coke and a smile and...whatever else he said. -
What Did You Get Today? (Not Model Related)
iamsuperdan replied to LOBBS's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
This arrived yesterday. Late 80s BC Rich ST-III in black/red crackle finish. I was super stoked to find this one. The very first good guitar I bought was the exact same guitar. I ordered it new in 1989, waited 5 months for it. I still have it, and it's still my absolute favourite guitar. I have over 20 guitars, and have owned and sold more than that, and nothing has the feel or the mojo of my original crackle. It's also the ONLY one I've ever seen finished in that pattern. I'm a part of several guitar groups and BC Rich groups on facebook and elsewhere, and no one else has come across it. So when I stumbled on this? Had to buy it. Now I have twins. Once I set it up, I'll have to take some decent pics of the pair. As for the original? It's the one guitar my kids aren't allowed to touch. And I'll be buried with it. -
Fantatsic Treasure found on Ebay
iamsuperdan replied to Modelmartin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There have actually been a couple of those builds that I've seen and considered buying. One was a van that had been finished to the same exacting standard, but hadn't been hacked or chopped up. I thought I might be able to purple pond it, strip it, and turn it into something. I've never actually gone through with that though. -
Fantatsic Treasure found on Ebay
iamsuperdan replied to Modelmartin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I wonder, has anyone ever reached out and asked this guy about his builds? Is there a reason they're built this way? There must be a story here somewhere. They also must be quite old. All the glue has yellowed, and I don't think anyone can fake the kind of weathering and dust and random hairs and whatever else is showing up on those kits. The other interesting thing is the diorama. It looks well done. -
I think it's kind of cool. What was wrong with the kit? Looks like it turned out well.

Fantatsic Treasure found on Ebay
iamsuperdan replied to Modelmartin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
From the description: "This may have some nicks or scratches on it and also maybe a little dusty. " Wait, what? And it's also from an "adult collection." I want to see that collection in all its glory. I've seen this seller's stuff all over Ebay. I'm not one to ever criticize or comment on what I perceive to be sub-par builds, but holy cow. -
Always. Open. The Box.
iamsuperdan replied to iamsuperdan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It actually looks like a decent kit, just not something I'm interested in. I don't know, maybe I'll build this, try my hand at something I have never built before. -

There's a new version? -
Somewhere around here, I think in the rare kit thread, there's a discussion about opening your boxes. When you get a kit, do you immediatelty unseal it, open it, and inspect it? I always do, some don't, it's all preference. Now when a kit becomes vintage or old, and it is still sealed, that can increase the kit's value. However, it also makes it just about impossible to go back to the manufacturer to get a fix. So recently, I did a trade and received a mint, unopened Monogram kit of the ZZ Top Eliminator. Super stoked, as I've been after this one for a while. I remove the shrink wrap, open the box, and start checking it out. First thing I notice is the chrome tree. Hmm...maybe it's the wrong tree, as the wheels are off. Then I look more closely. Definitely the wrong tree. And there's something not quite ZZ Top-ish about this decal sheet. Wait a sec... Yup. Monogram put the Beach Boys kit in the ZZ Top box. *le sigh* Ah well. Anyone want to trade an Beach Boys Li'l Deuce Coupe for an Eliminator?

Had a great trade with Bill Eh? Quite possibly the single best trade experience I've had around here. No one else has gone through the measures Bill did to make sure I was happy with his side of the trade. THanks Bill!

How Many Do You Work On At Once?
iamsuperdan replied to jaxenro's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Too many! I never have less than 6 on the go at any given time. I'd like to get that number down and focus on one or two, but I find that I need to have multiple projects on the go, so that as paint is drying on one I can be working on another. On Sunday I managed to get four kits into the"paint booth." -
I was going to say. I wish I could find a good restaurant that can feed 8 for $200! Especially if there was wine involved. I guess it all depends on the restaurant. I've heard of restaurants charging a fee for this kind of thing before, so I'm not surprised at all. As someone above said, it's like a corkage fee. However, if you called ahead of time and asked specificially about a charge for the service and were told no, and then you got a charge for it? Entirely unacceptable. Unfortunately, google reviews are about your only recourse here.

"dangerously small?" Methinks you exaggerate a little there. Yes, it looks like it needs tweaking, but i hardly think it's a catastrophic problem.

Okay, so I think we all get the picture here. The kit has a plethora of shortcomings and isn't an accurate representation of the real thing. Have I got that right? So how many times does that need to be said? I have a few thoughts. 1. the people who buy this kit are not idiots 2. is there a better option out there? 3. when built and displayed on a shelf, will this keep most NASCAR fans happy? 4. any more disparaging remarks about Rick Salvino and this thread gets shuttered. Did he get the kit right? Apparently not. But he is the only one I'm seeing stepping up, committing his own time and money in trying to get something to market that no one else is getting to market. If someone thinks they can do a better job, it sounds like everyone in this thread would love to see it. Someone above said they know a bad product when they seen one, and had all kinds of analogies about it. True enough, and that's the difference between being an armchair critic and being entreprenuerial. Having the gumption and drive to invest your time and money into something you're passionate about. If we're going to use analogies, it took the makers of WD40 forty tries to get it right. It took The ROlling Stones a few albums to get their sound right. Bill Gates' first computer was garbage. And I'm willing to bet that the first Revell or Tamiya kits were less than perfect too. Heck, nobody skewers Moebius like this for the shortcomings in their kits, which have been discussed here, but not with this kind of vitriol. Criticize the kit, not the person. 5. Maybe someone should build this kit, and document the fixes needed to make it accurate. Do a service for others. Or maybe just buy it, build it, display it, and enjoy it for what it is...the only option out there for this subject.
