What did you see on the road today?

I save the planet by using the rain to wet-sand GYMEE. π Fluctuating around 85ΒΊF. Got a half inch yesterday, just a tease today so far. So now the humidity is up, I can't be in the sun midday. What it looked like this morning when I rode the bike, the Hero Dirt was nice.

Do you also have 1:1 project cars?

Sorry, more of my Carport Find (AZ's version of Barn Find) GYMEE. Using my model building experience. Just to tease everyone π this is what a Southwest worktruck, then stored under a roof, looks like. Dry rot is our enemy. It came with a practically new gas tank, started that task. But I really wanted to get rid of the wrap and get the steering wheel smooth. All good paint has been polished. I'm not a mechanic, but I can tear stuff apart. This generator indicates how long it hibernated. Looked at two plugs, black soot but not burnt. Oil looks new, not black. After polishing off a bottle of π·, and it was gorgeous last night, polished these emblems. Started on removing the cheap repaint. I need to get yards of sandpaper!!! -

Love the run what you brung! This car is special with the car club. The new custodian brought it on a flatbed, but drove it to the club cruise. So sketchy "on the road", but he promised the now deceased Charter Club Member he would drive it to the next show (coming soon). I attended that member's service. And some other vehicles. -

Grand Canyon - North Rim Lodge "controlled burn" down
89AKurt replied to 89AKurt's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Appreciate the comments, cherish those memories! Here is another picture dad took, that is also the North Rim but to the west, Toroweap Point. I want to camp there, did when I first got married.- 10 replies

Just like when I'm in a model building mood (which I totally lack at the moment) I'm totally obsessed/possessed with this pickup. The label says Kelsey Products, same company that is known for wire wheels? I was thinking of rebuilding the engine, but that idea is losing ground. Had to get it pulled forward to do the back wheels, so here is the tailgate and ugly hitch. Got all the good paint polished inside. Love the bottom of the door. As it sits, polished hubcaps and new tires. The Prescott Antique Auto Club show is coming up soon, first weekend of August. -
Tell me Apple if there *might* be *any* rain today: That is not temperature. π Oh look..... just enough to change plans.

I've conditioned myself to block out the perimeter ads, simply ignore, dart around like an ant looking for what interests me on just the page, focus. I stopped watching cable TV around 2008, never turn on the TV at a motel, last time I checked it was 100% [bleepity beeping bleeper] ads. Just don't look at the voluptuous women...... oh wait... I'll be back......

It's almost like I'm working again, up early to do this and get that. Today it was getting all four tires under the truck. I had two already mounted, so I got the front done early. Had a neighbor yank it forward a bit, so I could get the back done. Polished the hubcaps. Didn't need to do anything with the wheels, which was nice for a change. I'm committed to staying at Survivor "barn find" non-SEMA class. Oh my, look at all that rust on this Southwest climate protected from the brutal sun (need a steel carport) worktruck. Even the way the exhaust dips down at the end is cool. The trailer hitch should be good rear weight bias, like what I did with Blue Cloud. Note to OCD Patina detail experts, grease at the springs, steering ends, etc., extra points. Check out the right taillight lens, more Patina points. Not a receiver trailer hitch, did those exist then? We have to get new plates, getting a cool one. How about this for a "parts box"? π If you want to build a one for a diorama, fill with extra parts! Sound is missing from photographs, doesn't take much to amuse me. -

For once I know more about something than you. π«’ I started a new topic just before this. It's all over the news, the same two pictures and same press release. *edit* Please make it stop!

Grand Canyon - North Rim Lodge "controlled burn" down
89AKurt posted a topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
The second time the North Rim Lodge burnt down. But last time there wasn't modern Codes, so I don't think it will ever be rebuilt. This really ticks me off: [...] initially managed as a controlled burn after being sparked by lightning on July 4, rapidly spread due to high winds and dry conditions. [...] Who keeps telling us there is a drought? Who runs the weather forecast system? My dad retired from the NPS just when they changed their policy, if natural caused let it burn. But come on, no excuse for this. I'm really depressed since I lived on the South Rim as a kid. Dad was a Seasonal at the North Rim, mom was working for Fred Harvey, the rest is history. Now this iconic Park Service lodge (and gas station and other buildings) looks like California. He took this slide picture. I stayed in a log cabin several years ago, took a Mule ride, sure glad I did, you never know.- 10 replies

Several years ago I was lucky to attend a Hopi rain dance. But I didn't learn the chant and gift thing, so I've been trying my own version. Windows open, Honda washed, doing something outside, iPhone weather app showed nothing for rain. Then after lunch I heard thunder, looked north, rushed to Home Deephole for a tarp. Had the plywood done, so this worked as planned. Then about two minutes later the rain stopped. Dumped a few miles away, so that is what "10% chance" the radio weather guy said looks like.

Oh geez, look folks, you think that unopened Holy Grail kit is expensive? π³ I think those sellers have the same higher-than-a-kite expectations. I watched a video posted 7 years ago, of a guy who was thrilled to win a bid for one of these at over $300. Side track, would something like that be a cool model rocket? I will attempt to relate some things to model building, because the thought process is about the same (which means the plans of mice and men....) in some cases. First off, polishing chrome, full scale Bare-Metal foil. These headlight trim rings are amazing, not a straight line to speak of, diecast metal is thick! That turn signal lens is almost broke in half, managed to get back on without breaking. I spent hours since it was delivered, polishing the glass and chrome and stainless steel trim. First "barn find" for me, I was surprised that no class cleaner would touch it, used the same 3M polishing compound intended for paint buffing to get a π₯ glassy finish, then the glass cleaner. Masked the center of the windshield to see the difference. Novus polishing model window parts. Leaving the mirror alone, reduced glare. I have not done some chrome parts yet, can you tell which ones? I have 6 wheels, taking 3 to Discount Tire just up the highway (first parts of this truck to attend cruises). Will switch out and have a complete set of correct wheels. This is the first big step to commit doing a Survivor relic, resist modernizing everything (which happens to save πΈ), the exception of installing new radial tires is one. What WIP on the bench does not have missing wheels? Testing out some spots on the interior paint. There is a new gas tank. Welded striker plate. Look, another common theme, need to get a parts catalog. I love the color. The spotlight is too cool, even though it's dead. The lens is also the bulb, it's broken. Wires were cut long ago. Found some rust. Maybe I could scratch-build an LED light into that? There are 3 holes in the roof for the bubblegum machine. Bummer they drilled through that headliner. The rubber on the perimeter is dry rotted bad, so that is off limits. There are two sets of visors, mounts are different. The driver side is another color. So this is the first Dorky Cheapskate Engineering modification, used a scavenged ceiling fan blade. Table saw cut it parallel then cross cut to length. Eased the edges, this is where I will use sandpaper like on a model. Drilled holes into the metal with the visor clamped in place, did the first, put in the bolt, then went from there. Polished the paint in that corner. I need to find out if that is a WRC roof vent knockout. The engine was pulled out of the back 40, then lifted into the bed. I need to rebuild it, but will see if the existing engine will run. I got a sheet of plywood, cut to fit on the bed, cut out a hole for the engine, got a tarp just in time. Now to ponder the Pontiac...... Is that a decal? Would it look too stupid to save the patina on the valve covers, and install on a new looking engine? π -
