It's not hard once you know how...

Wish I could build a model that fast. π Risk of posting a You Toob video, get pulled into a rabbit hole. This blows me away: -

Trade school enrollment is way up...
89AKurt replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
For what my two cents is worth, I am a product of a Trade school. But it's complicated. Right after High School, entered a Tucson trade school, but when I told dad that I was helping to teach other students how to draw, he let me go to one in Phoenix. Only one year, they had a second year that they tried to rope everyone in to. Years later I was told to repay a student loan for the second year, which I did not attend, lucky I kept records, and come to find out the school was out of business. After moving to Prescott, I attended the local college for an AA Degree in construction, so that is the complication for this subject. They are experimenting with 3D printed houses, which is really just the walls. I never ever had a problem paying back my meager student loans; what Universities charge is a bloody crime. In the construction industry here, the lack of skilled trade workers is slim. Try to find an Architect and/or Engineer to do anything in a reasonable time. I could have kept working, but needed to get addicted to Prozac. IMO, just because you have a computer doesn't mean you know how to design a good structure. So now A.I. will do it for us, I can hardly wait /sarc off the charts/. -
I'm pleased to be able to move around still, but I'm worried........ Been busting butt to get my backyard remodel complete, before a much needed gully-washer. Got about 200 pounds of flagstone to put under the Shipping Container perimeter, have to get just a few more pieces. Just when I completed this job, it rained cats and dogs. Also pleased to use some of the scavenged Redwood for something, this is where the forklift hole is. Another reason to be pleased, a reliable pickup that isn't a rolling computer. I have hauled at least 6 tons of rock and dirt this summer.

Don't get me going about weather vs. climate and all the Doomer porn that goes with it. They are making it appear flash floods are a new thing, ever wonder how mountains and valleys are formed? Desert Rat that I am, when big rain falls, we jump for joy. My location got 1.1" today! But first, last night a big storm east of me, the river drains to the right (south) so I knew it would be running. I made myself get out early, to get sand and/or rocks. This is about 20 miles southeast from my home, it's parched, and bumpy. This is the river, I didn't dare cross it without 4WD. I gathered just rocks. I'm more amused than I should be with the iPhone weather app, this is when I returned home. Good thing I don't need it for work or camping. Today was a typical "Monsoon" day, fake you out with almost clear sky, then "out of the blue" as they say. And just then.... Oh.... just a little rain now.... As the saying goes, if you don't like the weather, just wait a few minutes. Oh wait, I was just kidding! From inside when it was really pouring. Got small hail too. Had the lightning map and weather radar up, watching numerous strikes at once was cool. I should repost this in the What Pleased You Today thread. π

What did you see on the road today?

Pictures, or it didn't happen. π We in Arizona are rejoicing that the "Monsoon" weather pattern has finally be allowed to happen. It's about two months late. When we drive around, some areas are green, while much of the area is still in severe drought. I'll start with this killer rainbow Thursday evening, this is a panorama shot, video was the only other way to get it all. Yesterday, I went for the fifth trip to get bulk spec ABC. For laughs, iPhone said: Then: From zero to 50%, let me show you what that really means, while I drive through Prescott Valley to go to our airport, a 10 mile one way trip. Going to turn left (west) after the bridge, it's just starting. At the airport location, I live on the other side of that hill that's getting rain, 6.08 miles by lighting bolt. Not even two miles on the return leg: Call me a nut, but check out how the hood is reflecting the thunderhead on the water streaks. π I'm on the other side of that gully-washer. Back to that intersection in the first picture. Back home, the airport is to the right off the picture. Been asking for 0.68 ton, Loader nailed it! I got it unloaded and spread around, and did a rain dance to pack it down last night. π· This morning at the Bosa cruise, scattered sprinkles, but more people showed up later, gorgeous day.

What Did You See In Your Yard Today?
89AKurt replied to Tim W. SoCal's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Must be Deer hunting season, this guy has been hanging around the neighborhood. I heard it's hoofs on the gravel at sunrise, I got out of bed. Saw it several times during the day. -

I will lurk for this build. I have the Sportstar "slammer" kit, wish I had the motivation to join in. -
This is AZ69 going to Prescott, AZ. They have a section getting a new median installed. I never saw where asphalt (tarmac, bitumen, paving, whatever) is used as the foundation for concrete work. For some reason Arizona can't lay roadways that don't fall apart when it rains/snows. I'm just using some not-so Common Sense, would the freeze-thaw cycle push that concrete up and break it? Drilling into the road, what could go wrong? This is a continuous curb. Much of this stretch has these cross drainage things, with nice sharp corners to blow out tires and wreck suspensions if you scrape the curb. They cut the asphalt for those, but the curbs are on top of the road surface. The last picture location, I could have been killed by someone who had a heart attack and crossed the yellow line (decades ago), 3 people died behind me. I know the purpose of this median is to stop that, but I see new problems. Anyone else see this in other locations?

I'm doing the happy rain dance! As usual the iPhone weather app blows big chunks. That was before going to the cruise, now during: You know what, I'm outta here! On my home, got 0.4" before sundown. So finally we are getting the typical Monsoon thunderstorms.

I prefer to avoid crowds. Service everywhere is getting worse. But yea, that place. π

I've been moving literally tons of dirt and rock, for a major backyard remodel. Been doing what I call micro-grading, a little cut here, fill over there, moved rocks that have been wasting space for decades, made retaining walls from rocks found over four decades. When I built my house, almost didn't need plans. Now you need Engineering on everything. They also want you to get a Grading & Drainage permit when you build a new house, if over 50 cubic yards is moved, I'm way over that during the decades of moving dirt. They have also been forecasting rain, finally, and I wanted to get this done. I also discovered "spec bulk ABC" which is much better than loose gravel or regular ABC. Pleased I got this done before the rain tonight. Pleased that Blue Cloud hauled a total of 2.6 tons with 4 trips. Been revising landscaping too, Domino Effect. Wanted a level parking spot, had to raise up the grade about 10 inches, so the steps needed attention. There were two flagstones with a finished edge in the random section at the stone yard. Used a grinder to round the end. It's fun building stuff that doesn't need much measuring, but it's sort of like scratch-building with the test fitting. Pleased I didn't totally smash any fingers.

Alright this qualifies as 'on the road', been seeing it often. Safari, not a Nomad. The car ahead of it is common here. π³ -
