Alfa 158 Mistercraft
absmiami replied to Michael jones's topic in Other Racing: Road Racing, Salt Flat Racers
Worked really well send these photos to Mr Indycals - Michael Potrero … -
The GTO engine has what appears to be an oil pump at the bottom of the engine cover - but the early Colombo 12s did not have this feature - the bottom of the casting is ribbed - so I removed the pump housing and added the ribs with strips of .010 x .030 Evergreen strip … the Early engines also had what appears to be a housing at the forward end of the crankshaft bearing that mite be used to start the engine - not sure - the Barchetta has a starter - but maybe some early race engines did not …

Clean clean clean did you hit the louvers with a technical pen - or what ? -
Another change from the GTO engine - the exhausts - the GTO engine exhaust castings from the Reps and Mins engine is great - with the correct 6 into 2 arrangement - but the UMI castings have the correct 6 into 1 pattern found on the Barchetta and the other early Colombo 12s - these are white metal castings - which will accept a limited amount of bending …

The photo of the Barchetta engine bay that I posted 3 weeks ago shows the magnetos - the plug wires feed into the cap in a group - different than the mags on the GTO engine - so I decapitated the mag castings that were so carefully made for the GTO engine kit (sorry, Norman) - and remade the mags …. Bits and pieces of Evergreen ….

Don’t try your luck on a last paint coat - if you have another problem - you don’t have enough paint to correct it - on to the clear coat … looks great anyway ..

This is a follow to Gramps posting of some models built by a fellow modeler - the Western 24 sc white metal kits are rare finds - the Maserati 250F kit is gettable - but eBay postings are sometimes too $$$ …. Same for the Ferrari GTO Kit …. The Alfa 158 kit was produced some time in the early 80’s - and appears to have had only a brief run in Western’s kit production - which is a shame - because now that I’ve obtained one , I can testify that It is The best kit in Western’s range of Grand Prix kits - with the caveat that i have yet to see first hand the Mercedes GP kit … these rarely show up at auction - post me if you see one and you want to consider price - I think I paid “fair market” - whatever that actually means …. now I’ll have to build it - which of course ruins its kit value …. Oh well - don’t tell the Mrs … -

Problem solving - you’re making room on the kit shelves - but your fastback will eventually fight for space on the display shelves - but that’s a good problem !

The part that I’m using from Mike Q’s engine castings lacks flanges for the exhaust pipes - I’m adding these with bits made from Evergreen strip. - .015 by .156 -

The front of the early Columbo 12s located accessories like the alternator and the fuel pump in a different manner than the later GTO engine - requiring some changes to the timing chain cover of the GTO engine cover casting sawed away from the Reps and Mins GTO block …

This is the electric diagram for the 34 and the 38 - but I think that the 29 set up is nearly the same - as the Ford 255 - that’s the 29 engine - was developed at the same time as the DOHC …

So that’s where the voltage regulator goes !! Glad I took a short break on this project - now I can torment myself to my hearts content …. I’ve got a reprint of the manual for the engines - a Ford publication - but I didn’t have this Ford publication - which makes me wonder what else I’m missing …THANKS i think …

Enjoyed the whole build. Do you think that a trim of the radiator shroud will allow better use of the hinge system ? I’ll try to show this to Harold in a few weeks … -

Paul and the Mrs lost everything in the Paradise fire - I think this is mentioned on his site - which is still up - although taking no orders .... - but they have decided to return to Paradise - in a condo at present - while deciding where to live ... Paul's sense of humor remains perfectly intact - would like to meet them some day - -
Early Ferrari Models 1949-1967
absmiami replied to Gramps46's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Just a brief follow on my GTO series II post. - Paul Fisher informs me that this was not one of his - believes it to be a Joker knockoff - interesting - it does have that distinct petroleum odor when you sand or grind the resin - which - as Fisher points out - means that I should “mask up” when I prep the body … -

on the subject of unobtanium ... While starting in on the UMI Barchetta kit - I remembered that I also had this buried in my stash Sold to me by UMI - I believe that Mike had Fisher do the body - hence the Acme tag under the tail ... rare rare rare thick casting but as with all of Paul Fisher's efforts - lines are spot on ... I've also got a slightly started Peter Wright vac formed Spyder Corsa kit - which is one reason that I'm going to try to get castings of the the Ferrari engine that I'm building on the Model Cars thread will ask Norman or Harold to do the honors ...
