  1. A quick check of Douglas Nye’s old Theme Lotus book on all of the early Lotus formula cars confirmed my suspicion …
  2. The steering column will enter a smaller horizontal box attached to the steering box housing …
  3. The box is made from larger dia tube shaped on the lather with a file and angle markings on one of my Sherline chucks ..
  4. The links are guided by two forged arms - one leaving the steering box and a corresponding arm on the left side of the frame - the arms are made from Evergreen strip - drilled and filed and sanded -
  5. Starting with the tie rod links - 3 segments - made from 1.1 mm brass tubing and some stray white metal suspension parts left over from an old project ..
  6. This is a portion of a drawing in the Merritt book on early Ferraris that i cited a while back - it shows the general layout of the steering box and links - although I couldn’t make posable front wheels i wanted to include these features.
  7. Good pix - using an I phone?
  8. so I've been doing some more research Lotus entered two 16s in the 1959 Sebring Grand Prix this link has some good shots of what I think is chassis 365 http://www.gurneyflap.com/formula1lotus.html I think that is the Ireland 16 that finished 5th see also the Ultimatecarpage site I think the late Joel Finn might done all the research for his book on this race ...
  9. Zero Paints aluminum for the air box …
  10. That much for a kit with bad tires and an only OK engine - convince Mad Mike to print a few more 8th sc Cosworths - use his engine on your old 72 - and you’ll really have something - and as long as im spending ALL of you holiday cash - consider getting those after-market tires -
  11. Engine nearly finished - gotta make the fuel line
  12. The right hand distributor is attached - its sits a bit lower than the left - no idea why …. But I’m just relieved that the plug wires cooperated …
  13. Everything fits under the bonnett - the scoop sits just behind the cross brace - after some trimming -
  14. I added some pegs to the base and a tapered air scoop -

  16. Best Balsa sells a replacement set
  17. Ace - how could i NOT build it ?? look at all these goodies … ! cutaway by Lofthouse - many times posted on the net - originally published late in ‘58 in ?? The Motor?? This is the ‘58 16 - the one that i will build has Len Terry’s mods to the frame and suspension …
  18. The scale is 24th - I used his Cooper casting for my Cooper IX build three yrs ago - all of his castings were thin - and his chosen subjects were almost always unique - i do not think he offered the 16 as a kit - he intended to - but was badly injured in an accident before he was able to offer the 16 in kit form - dont know if anyone else was able to obtain this kit body - would love to know …
  19. And this brings me in a round about way back to the mysterious Guido Feiw - the resin caster responsible for the few in number and hard to find Scale Kraft kits - fr South Africa -
  20. This is - i think - the only Lotus 16 in North America - Chapman and Lotus built 8 - per the Taylor Lotus bible - in 58 and 59 - the Barber 16 is an early chassis - Lotus used a series of revisions by Len Terry in 59 - all improvements - although the revised 16 continued to break with regularity - I’m going to build a revised 16 - one is currently for sale in GB - ill get the link and post it - with excellent photos - its one of the last front drive Grand prix cars - not a successful Lotus - but it looked cool - and many of its features were carried forward to the Lotus 18 …
  21. I actually would love to see a comparo thread involving the old 8th scale kit - which i built 40 (gulp) yrs ago and the Pocher - from what i have seen on line - the Pocher “kit” is not a great improvement - … and i still think Pocher should offer an unpainted kit option … well - i guess the tires are better - the profile of the tires on my older 72 were just poor …
