What happend with the paint ?
Oldcarfan27 replied to PierreR89's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Looks to me like mould release was left behind before painting. Also, on the Kenworth, it looks like primer wasn't used underneath the red paint. Primer is needed to give the paint something to hold on to. -
"Holy Grail" Models?
Oldcarfan27 replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Technically, with all their out of scale operating features, true modelers would probably call both of them toys. And yes I would love to have both of them, but "needle in a haystack" is too kind a word. And no, I won't pay scalpers' prices for them. Shame neither one of them was ever reissued again, I guess that's what makes it a 'grail' for me. I've thought about converting a Monogram DB3 into one, but that's a lot of research and scratchbuilding! Still, might be worth while. -
"Holy Grail" Models?
Oldcarfan27 replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
These would have to be a few that I hope to stumble across someday. 1. Monogram Dog Catcher. It was a kit I built with my grandfather when I was 6 or 7. I'll never forget his big thumb print on the front of the glass! 2. AMT Bushwacker. Was a birthday present when I was 8, and I built it badly! But that box art calls to me. 3. Lindberg Red Demon/Blue Streak /Hot Canary. I don't know when my dad got it, but I remember as a kid, finding it in a box in the garage - with all the optional parts and trying my best to get it all to work. Alas, another one that I failed. And I remember how those decals scared me. Satan is ugly! 4. Aurora Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang. I know, this one is unobtainium. I like the colors, the chrome and the over-the-top features. The fact it's from a Disney movie means we'll never see another one. But it's soooo cool! 5. Aurora Super Spy Car. This is another "Oh, dream on" kit that I could only hope to find at some out-of-the-way garage sale someday. 6. MPC Ironside van. This one is so obscure that I've never seen a box of it in person. However, I know it exists because I have some of the specific van parts, including the body, roof and the wheelchair. Now if I could acquire the rest of it. -
Renault Dauphin

If you build one, make it for a diorama of this... Be sure to put the airliner landing in the "plane crash" position. -
Pretty sure they came from the old Trophy Series kits of the 60s. Because the kits came with 2 engines - 1 was for the car and the extra one was for the stand.

Does Super Clean Wear Out, or Weaken?
Oldcarfan27 replied to Snake45's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I think the type of paint and prior body prep has something to do with it as well. If the plastic was never cleaned of mould release before painting, then paint will come off easier. I've had old spray painted bodies with no prep or primer clean off most if not all of the paint. However old brush painted parts barely get moved. I've cleaned Lacquer/primer jobs, where the paint comes off in big chunks with a firm toothbrush, Scotchbrite or popsicle stick. And the crevices will curl and peel away after washing and air drying. I also use different methods to remove different paints. I generally try Purple Power for enamels or acrylics, fresh brake fluid for Lacquer. Easy off or drain openers for tough paints. Rubbing alcohol or glass cleaners for Gloss Cotes or water-based paints. NEVER USE BRAKE FLUID ON RESIN PARTS!!! Use Easy Off for that. -
Incredible! Especially the door and underhood details. You really did your research. Next up, super detailed XKE?

They did the Pontiac 3 times! Probably between Nova annuals. Hard to believe they kept modifying tooling back and forth between Chevys and Pontiacs. There must've been separate tooling inserts. Something must still be left (I hope)! Very little is different between the Nova and Ventura. Mostly the nose, hood and taillights. Pretty much everything else is from the Nova kit.

Kentworth W900 - Fully Laden
Oldcarfan27 replied to Rich Ghia's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I feel sad for the pickup truck, it looks like it's on it's way to it's final resting place. -
Beautiful build. But one thing bugs me - did you take the photos underneath a pegboard wall? It distracts from your nice paint job.

Twenty in '20: Tommy124's model car year in review
Oldcarfan27 replied to Tommy124's topic in Model Cars
Love them all! I need to work on my airbrush skills so I can get consistently good finishes like yours. -
Looks like he's working on an AMT 55 Tbird and he's already finished an AMT 32 Ford, a Revell 48 Ford with a resin Sportsman conversion, a Monogram 50 Ford p/u and an AMT 57 Ford Fairlane with a roof cut off. Can't really see what else he's working on, but he does seem to like his Fords!?

Need help with a Chrysler Paint color
Oldcarfan27 replied to lordorion1974's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Looks like it's called Halo Blue and it's a Dizler paint code, you'll have to find somebody who can mix their formula. Otherwise, I'd say just mix it by eye to match the chip. Looks like a simple powder blue, shouldn't be too hard -

Bump. Found this old thread online and wanted new readers to see what's possible from this "much-beloved" favorite. Enjoy, but don't expect a response - it's been a long time since this was posted. -
I would be EXTREMELY suspicious!!!! Possibility of it being a hacker, trying to get banking information. Beware!

Blushing comes from the moisture in the air, or temperature is too cold outside. Like fogging on the windshield, only it's trapped in the paint. After it was completely dried, I've sprayed clear over it and never had it come back after that.

Stalled 1967 Mustang GT coming back in the queue.
Oldcarfan27 replied to Bills72sj's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Do you have a moisture trap (inline filter)? The compressor may be making moisture and sending it through the line - ending up in the paint and on your car. -
Blushing is easy to fix, as long as it's not crazing. Shoot some clear or polish. Problem solved. I don't worry about blushing, I find that the paint levels out better when it does.
