That's a nice looking build. I had similar trouble with dark blue metallic appearing black in photos. I guess the paint relies on stereoscopic vision to make it seem more blue...or something. Something I tried which seemed to improve things, was to use the manual white balance setting on your camera. It brightens up things up a bit.

Yeah, your pal is going to love it! Nice build. By the way, if you get trouble with clear red straying onto adjacent chrome, a slightly blunted cocktail stick, dipped in acrylic thinner (used gently) will remove the red from the high points and leave a neat finish. But in truth, it's only macro photography that shows these things up. The eye will see it differently. So it'll still look awesome on your buddy's shelf.
