Chevy LUV

Some more work done. Painted the body Rustoleum Gloss Seaside (which takes forever and a day to dry) I haven't tried the Rustoleum paint+primer line on models until now. I sprayed it right over the bare plastic. It covered great and dried (mostly dried) smooth. I originally wanted to go with dark blue like the truck I owned, but I also needed a bright color (for my ar500 steel) Turns out, I like it. The kit comes with a 265 V8/4 spd. I switched it out with a 1996 4.3 V6/auto. It lined up perfect, didn't even have to change the driveshaft length. Still a lot left to do, but it's starting to look like a truck. Oh, the radiator traps the hood hinge in place. Installing a radiator hose is going to be a challenge. -
Wow... I dont even know how anyone could've missed that. I hope Revell takes care of it, although from past experience, I have my doubts.

My example had an upward bow in the middle of the chassis. This made the fit between the cab and bed off quite a bit. Given the issues thus far, I decided to skip trying to straighten it and leveled it instead. Also, the front spoiler/lower pan thingy popped off twice. It only has two small contact points at the bottom edge of the fenders. I added some bracing to give myself more areas to glue as well as keep the part from flexing. -

I dont have any right now. I'd thought of the mold release angle, but washing the parts didnt seem to effect anything. The best way I've found so far is roughing up the gluing contact points. -

Plowboy, the styrene seems on the soft side. It cuts (too) easily. -
I was really excited to get my hands on this kit, as I owned a 76 for years. I actually liked it, despite its tendency to rust as a hobby. But, after receiving it, and messing with it for a bit, I'm a little disappointed. Whatever plastic it is molded in, is horrible. It tends to rip and tear even with a fresh, sharp blade. Using nippers to remove parts from the trees makes an even worse mess. Also, Tamiya cement and even superglue doesn't stick too well. The first pic shows where I had to reinforce the cab wall. It would just pop loose. Sanding the joints with a coarse grit helps, but not all joints are conducive to doing so. As supplied, the kit comes with 8 lug rims. They're nice, but not accurate. The second pic shows what I chose to use. They're the extra 6 lug wheels from the MPC Deserter kit. I originally intended to rebuild the wheel openings to depict the truck a little closer to stock, along with moving the taillights from under the tailgate to either side, to depict a slightly newer model year. However, that plan went out the window as I'm afraid I'll destroy the body trying to work with this horrible plastic. Third pic shows a preliminary mockup.

Looks like some of the junk that Testor's reboxed in the 80s.

Mine should be here tomorrow. I was going to cut off the fender flares and rebuild the wheel openings, but if the plastic is wonky, I may have to rethink that.
-
Does it actually come with those 8 lug wheels shown on the box art?

Thanks for all of the compliments. Yes, I was going for late 50s early 60s. I used to really be into that style of rods and customs. Now though, I tend to build more 70s and 80s style (jacked up rears and wide rims)

I use Evercote usually, but I'm out at the moment. Dries fast and somewhat easy to sand. I have had mixed results with hobby grade fillers. I also use superglue for very small imperfections. Some people will use superglue mixes with baking soda, but that too has given me mixed results. If the humidity swings rapidly the soda can liquify and come to the surface. -
Not sure if this is considered a car or truck...I'm sure the mods will take care of it if I'm wrong. This is an old build given to me in pieces by my older brother. He built it in the late 80s. Being in the Navy, he moved a lot. It got broken somewhere along the way. He gave it to me around 00 or 01 and I tossed it in the closet and forgot about it. Then, a year or so later I won an ebay auction for a lot of kits that had either been started or parted out. One of the incomplete kits happened to be an older issue of my brother's build. I stripped off the Testors light blue paint and repainted it with the closest Tamiya shade I could find. The wood was molded in tan, so I just brushed tamiya clear orange over it which turned out pretty well. I had to replace his wire wheels because I broke one trying to clean them up. I ended with 53 Corvette hubcaps and tires. All of the chrome and the engine came from the donor kit. It's been 10 years since finishing, so I cant recall everything that I replaced, but for the most part I used his kit.

Another build sped up by the quarantine. Kit arrived in the mail on Thursday, I finished it this morning. Built entirely out-of-box. Paint is Testors Flame Red over the bare plastic. The foiling got tedious so I gave up and finished with a Molotow pen. It came with that hood scoop, but I dont think it was meant to be used. I had clearance issues with the tunnel ram and carbs. I had to grind out the inside of the scoop, as well as add a gasket to get the hood to close. Eh, not bad for a 70s engineered kit.

So...has anyone gotten their hands on one yet? I bought one on Ebay last night. Should be here later this week.

I like it! Now I wanna go dig mine out of the stash.

Thanks for all of the compliments! After I uploaded the pics, I realized that the door handle was falling off lol Good thing I found it! Below is a screenshot of the inspiration.

Just finished today. This quarantine really speeds up the build process! I started on it less than two weeks ago. Paint is Testor's Flame Red with their wet-look clear. Rims came from an Amt/Lindberg Dodge 330 with the redline tires from the Dirty Donny GTX. The air cleaner and valve covers are from my junk box. I didnt put the mirrors on (I'll just knock them off by accident) and there's still some Turtlewax in the panel lines. I also shaved the emblems, as they're getting harder to paint as I age lol

Nice start! My favorite brand of pickups. My dad bought a new 82 in that color. He kept it about a year and gave it to my brother, who drove it until all of the other SoCal drivers destroyed it. -
What’s your most and least favourite task?

Just remembered, I've spent more time than I care to gluing door mirrors back on. From now on, I'm thinking it might be a good idea to drill and pin them in place.
