"portable" modeling kit...grab and go?
58 Impala replied to Brian_B's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I use a Plano model 737 tackle box. I bought it at Walmart, but any good sporting goods store should carry them. It's big enough to carry everything I need for model building (well almost everything). It does weight around 30 lbs. but as soon as I finish my model room I'll take some stuff out of it. -

It was interesting to watch, great racing footage. Also some pretty gruesome footage of some really bad wrecks. -
Wow,very nice work. Beautiful color, great paintwork. Went and looked at your FB page, Tremendous amount of work and detail went into that build.

Need to find some wheels
58 Impala replied to Talbot90's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The Revell 32 sedan has spoke wheels but they are a little wider. The other choices might be Modelhaus, or Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland. I'd call or email both Don at Modelhaus and Norm at R&M of Maryland. I've talked to the both of them, the are very helpful -
Pretty neat idea putting the turbo 4cyl in that kit.

Very cool, very nice job. Definitely way different.

The first time I watched the Isle of Man TT was in a movie back in the early 80's. It was a semi documentary called "Up on 2 Wheels". They showed all types of motorcycle racing and when they got to the Isle of Man, they had on board camera....blew me away. Those guys are definitely insane, I try to watch it every year. The other class besides the super bikes that are a blast to watch are the bikes with the sidecars. The guy in the sidecar hangs way out only inches from the asphalt, fun to watch. -
the one that got away.....

I actually missed two good deals in 1979. The first was a silver w/red 63 SplitWindow 327 2-speed, blew oil smoke $6000. The other was a gold 58 Impala convertible w/348 4bbl ( it was in pieces) $7000. Today I couldn't touch either one for anywhere near those prices. Oh well, at least I can afford them in plastic. -

I want to buy a few kits, one to build and a couple for parts (especially the Halibrand wheels). -
Wal-mart has models again...
58 Impala replied to model-collector's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm talking about a lot more than just a few kits at a random few Walmarts. My Super Walmart hasn't had any in several years. I float through the toy section occasionally just to check. I was under the impression that random managers put them on the shelf on their own accord. I know Walmart has the few odd kits you can order on line, but nothing of much interest. -

I talked to Ed Sexton from Revell at the 2012 IPMS convention this week. And I asked if Revell would ever sell kits at Walmart again, he said they were looking into it. -
The Super Walmart by my house carries Krylon in dozens of colors in gloss, satin and flat. I use Krylon a lot for frames ,suspensions, and interiors. I've seen people paint bodies and polish them out, I've been tempted to give that a try.

Revell '50 Oldsmobile Club Coupe 2'n1
58 Impala replied to styromaniac's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I was at the 2012 IPMS convention this week and had the pleasure of talking with Ed Sexton from Revell. Real nice guy. I asked when all the new kits would be out. He said the Olds would be out Oct, the 62 Vette &57 Fairlane would both be out by Nov and Dec. If I remember correctly quite possibly the Gearz street rod and one of the new Foose cars. I asked if Revell would ever do a new tooling of the 63 Splitwindow Corvette, he said he gets asked that alot but new tooling is expensive. I keep my fingers crossed maybe they may listen to us. I also asked if Revell kits will ever be sold at Walmart again, he said they were working on in. They are trying to be available to a larger market of people, particularly younger people to try and bring them into the hobby. -

Hey Dr Cranky your hobby town shelves look like my hobby closet ( but I think I might have a bigger selection). -
Thank for all the tips. I've shot mettalics, pearls and candies. Most of those need a base of some kind. I bought several cans of One Coat and didn't want to waste paint or ruin a paint job and have to use the purple bath.
-
Quick question, is it necessary to put a silver base coat under Testors One coat metallics?
-
Wow, nice paint. Panel painting is hard enough to do 1:1 let alone 1/24-25. Nice tribute to a great painter.

Where can I get the Pearl X paints?

I'm also a baby boomer and grew up in a strict household. My parents raised me to be polite and respectful, I was also taught by my father and grandfather patience and how to do things and work with my hands. I was also taught self reliance and not social dependence. My wife was also raised in a similar household. And I'm proud to say we have raised our son with same principles and to be a hard working, ambitious and a self reliant individual. He was a well behaved child, did well in school and just recently graduated college with two bachelor degrees. Yes he enjoys playing video games and loves technology, but I also taught him to work with his hands. I have taught him how to build car models (of course), also how to work on 1:1 cars and a little bit of woodworking thrown in. He just got married a wonderful woman with like disciplines, so I think they will pass the same things on to their children. My father showed me how to build car models, I showed my son and hopefully he will pass the hobby on to a future grandson (with a little help from me of course ) -

Hey Charlie if I go on Friday, I'll wear your ProTech shirt also and really confuse the heck out of everyone who doesn't know you. -
Nice job. Kind of reminds me of Lady Penelope's car from the old TV series the Thunderbirds
