Atlantis Models has bought another lot of tooling/molds.....
OldNYJim replied to Dave Van's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Looks like the next 1/25 kit (according to this old press release that I forgot about) should be what Atlantis describles as a "sixties All American '23 T Roadster". Looking forward to seeing that one! I nearly ran out of stuff to buy from them (although I have a couple of my wishlist once they update their Amazon store again...) -
Ahem

Designed some tires and printed them so I can build this kit - it’s missing a few parts, and I never wanted to part out a WHOLE kit that would then, itself, need parts ? Plus, the tires in this issue of the kit are much smaller than the ones in the original issue, so I had chance to correct that too. Next thing to tackle will be a rear axle (I have one, but need two…)

Thanks fellas! I’m kinda stuck in a cycle of priming, painting and clearcoating bits right now….but, got a couple of bits done… Added the rare underchassis stripes that weren’t really an option…plus, shot some on the dash: Unfortunately, seeing as I’m in progress clewrcoating all these bits I can’t get much assembly started on ANYTHING, although the engine will be first in line…in the meantime keeping myself busy working thru some of the little bits and pieces like the opening up the holes on the steering wheel and prepping the washer fluid bag: Engine parts are in the strip tank getting dechromed so I can Alclad them and start work on the engine this coming week - but I am taking the opportunity to upgrade the kit carb a little with one of these 3D printed Holleys: Not a major update, but it’ll all start coming together once I’ve finished laying down clear on everything blue and can start actually assembling some stuff…more soon!

Took advantage of Hobby Lobby clearing some of their kits out - there was a bunch of others but these were the three that grabbed me… The ‘40 is molded in bright yellow, and the Vette in bright orange, both of which surprised me a little

Yes sir! I would’ve picked up those ‘50 and ‘66 Chevy pickups too if they had those. Funny thing - I’ve wanted to grab a 40 Ford delivery for ages now, and the Valpo store never had any. Then, when they finally get one, it’s on clearance already ??

Congratulations Mike!

My local store had a BUNCH of kits marked down to $7.49 today - AMT, Revell, some snap kits, that little Airfix VW Bus that they all seem to have - a good mix of stuff too. Making room for new stuff for Christmas, maybe?

Old ones are the best! Back on the topic of containers - I used to use a lot of the stuff mentioned above for storing parts, half-finished projects, etc.etc. but eventually moved on to three of these: https://www.tenaquip.com/product/quantum-storage-system-drawer-cabinet-plastic-39-drawers-15-x-6-1-4-x-18-3-4-black-pdc-39bk-cg064 I got tired of having jars and tubs and a bunch of smaller containers and then having to remember where I put them or find a good spot for them. I like not having to think about storage for my storage Having identical ones lets me rearrange the drawers to suit whatever organizational system I end up settling on, some day (probably alphabetical, once I've finally decided exactly how many racks all my stuff will be spread across...) - plus they'll wall mount if that's helpful. Cheaper versions of these racks are like $20 at most hardware places - well worth it, to me...

Source for tiny metal nuts, bolts & etc?
OldNYJim replied to Monty's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If you just need a visible flat bolt head, Evergreen styrene hexagonal sprue is a good option - and a $3 pack will make HUNDREDS of bolt heads. Titchy Train Co makes a bunch of sizes in styrene too, with protruding thread and different shape and size heads. The model railroad community has a bunch of useful things that we can use for our purposes - the scales are 'wrong', usually, but luckily the bolts don't know what they're being used on... -
Got mine today here in Indiana - another GREAT issue, although I’ve only flicked through it so far. Already downloaded the birdcage Maserati though - what a cool thing for you guys to arrange! Worth the price of admission just for those gorgeous wire wheels!

Revell 32 Ford Roadster REVISED (former Rat Roaster tool)
OldNYJim replied to Mr. Metallic's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Awesome! Thanks for the update! Also - looks like they used Alclad for the chrome bits on their box-art model. I assume the chromed sprues weren't available when they were building that one... -
Depends which slicer you’re using as to the exact process, but reducing the layer height (from say, 0.05mm to 0.03, or even 0.01) in the print settings will help a lot with that. Of course, if you’re printing at five times the ‘resolution’ the printer has to actually print five times the number of layers, so your prints will take a lot longer. For larger objects that are easily sanded smooth, I’ve been printing with less resolution and just manually finishing the parts - say, if it’s something large that doesn’t necessarily have a bunch of detail like a body or what have you. If I’m printing, say, a carb or something tiny like that I’ll just let it roll on the best quality the printer can manage

Today's crazy thought - Any uses for one of these?

There's a bunch of cool things you can do with those! -
Model Builder Poll

Oh, mine asks my opinion on things - but mainly as a precursor to doing something regardless. "Honey, what about if we got another cat?" "No thanks" *2 weeks later* "Hey! Look! I got that cat we talked about! Say hi to Mr Mittens!" ?? -
I agree 100% - a 27T with a turtledeck really isn't very different to the exact same car but with a little pickup bed on back. Not what I would consider a 'truck' - but technically ought to be in the truck section. It would be cool for an exception to be made for hot-rod type trucks to be in with the other hot rods - but I don't disagree that it would be tricky to categorize sometimes exactly which thing goes where. Not least because sometimes something could fit in two places. As a compromise, I'd probably move the NASCAR and 'Other racing' categories down the sort order some, seeing as they're less popular than some of the categories currently below them - that would bump the trucks up somewhat and get more eyeballs on them (which is probably why people would like to be able to post trucks in the more popular 'cars' category in the first place): 'Too long, didn't read version'; would be nice to be able to post hot rod trucks in with hot rod cars, even if it means having to loosen up the definitions somewhat

I find, for spots like that, folding the sanding cloths over on themselves once or twice to create a 'point' so you can get in there often helps - but if it's a really tough area to get into it's often easier to rely on the polish to do more of the legwork. Much easier to get some Meguiars in there and use a q-tip than to try and polish in a little spot where there's a good chance of ruining something else (some raised trim, for example). Those little awkward-to-reach spots really make the difference between an 'ok' polishing job and a really well done one though, IMO - lots of people neglect to get in there and really make sure all the HARD parts are done as well as the easy parts
-
Funny thing is, Tom himself says its both a 396 AND a 283 in his description of the car: https://www.tomdaniel.com/85_kits/85_kits_pages/badman.html ?
-
Different exhausts on the second car too - guess this 'two in one' might actually have some different parts to play with! Cool!
-
Some of this is just making sure there's enough material (paint) to be ABLE to polish without sanding through...if you imagine you're removing say, a half layer of paint with each part of the polishing process, have you got enough layers to be able to complete all the sanding and polishing you want to do without running out of layers? If you're using a high build clear like the old Testors gloss clear enamel, you might only need a couple of coats because it's so thick - but if I'm using the Rustoleum lacquer clear I'll give it maybe 8-10 light coats of that, to be sure. Of course, you still have to be careful on the edges because they're more prone to 'polish-thru' - but just having enough clear on there to start with is a thing I wish I'd realized sooner when it comes to polishing
-
No - that's why they have to put pretty pictures on them now to get people to buy them ?
-
Looks like it will definitely have two sets of wheels, from the built-ups in that pic above! Sweet! Edit - and do those rear tires look different between the two cars too? Maybe an extra set of rears, at a minimum...

Model Builder Poll

FINALLY someone actually wants my opinion on something! About time!!! Completed! ?
