Need molding/casting help
crazyjim replied to crazyjim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That idea didn't work. The rotors were paper thin and most times the caliper broke off when coming out of the mold. Maybe I'm not doing molds correctly. I just take a cleaned yogurt cup, hot glue the bottom of a part, and pour the silicone. I let it set up, remove original part, and pour the resin. This method works great for the bucket seats I've been doing. This is quite a bit of excess resin when I remove the part that I just sand away. I'm not very good at pouring just right amount into the mold and always get overflow. I don't understand about just taping a part to the bottom and pouring silicone, especially for Pegasus disc brakes. Wouldn't the silicone just cover everything? How would the part be removed? -
Cats in the model room

We must have the same sickness, Bill. I used to play laser with Sabrina and laugh my butt off. It was really funny when she jumped up the wall to chase the light. Good times with a good kitty cat. -
Nice, Rob. The wood floor and tailgate look fantastic and the basket on the front is just right.

I've been using Dawn Power Dissolver recently with great success. I never remember to put on gloves with purple power and that stuff destroys my skin. The Dawn just washed away. It is more expensive than the purple stuff.

I want the detail on both sides. I had a thought just before going to bed last night. Cutoff the axle flanges, glue/tape the caliper down in an upright position. Let the mold dry. Flip the mold over and pour the resin. This way the caliper would be on top and with no flanges, the unit should (hopefully) come right out. I can then use Evergreen tubing for the flanges. I plan to try this version out today. Wish me luck. -
Lots of posters here were going nuts about a panel scriber from Mission Models in California. I ordered one and about 9 months later got sick of their "we ship next week" garbage and canceled the order.

Cats in the model room

I build my models out in my shop (20' x 40' steel building) that's about 100' from the house. When we had a kitty cat, she couldn't come out there. Sabrina was actually my wife's cat but I fell in love with her. Sabrina would love to go out on the lanai and chase lizards, take na drink from the pool, or just lay around in the sun. Sabrina got very sick 2 years ago and we had to take her to the vet and had her put down. We were with her for the final injection. I don't mind telling you that I'm a combat Marine and I cried like a baby after Sabrina took her last breath. We had Sarina cremated and have her ashes. Some of her toys are still laying around the house. We've donated some to the animal shelter, but we'll never get rid of them all. We certainly get attached to our critters and our lives are better because of them. -
I'm trying to mold and cast Pegasus disk brakes because they cost so much and I use lots of them. I've gone through 4 or 5 molds and cana't get it right. I've tried using clay as a base and making a 2 piece mold from there. The disc brake was laying flat. Should I be standing the disc brake up, bury it halfway into clay and start a 2 piece mold that way? I could really use some help here, anyone.

I almost forgot about this dio. Let's get going on lights and post some progress. Please?

Thnaks for the info guys. The Mack I was thinking is real old - had 2 single headlights in the front fenders. Since this truck is going to be used only as part of a display for my model car builds, I'm not going to be too fussy about proper wheels/tires. I've seen the post where a guy is selling some real nice looking aluminum wheels but there's no way I'd spend $14.00 on 1 wheel.

I need to build a truck to drag a car hauler trailer and was thinking an old Mack. Is such a kit available at a very reasonable price? If not, I'll probably look for a Peterbilt or Kenworth - the kind with the real long hood. I plan to check out Michaels and Hobby Lobby later this week with the 40% coupons I have.

What did you use on the headers for that look? I usually brush paint Testor's steel or jet exhaust on headers and exhaust pipes. Your build is looking quite good and I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

The only hot rod apparel I have is the T-shirt Jarius designed last year for a model car show. I'm expecting an MCM T-shirt (hint, hint Gregg) soon. I have a ton of Harley shirts. I never understood it, but we would visit Harley dealers just to buy a shirt. Sometimes we would ride a couple of days just for a shirt. Do Veteran shirts count? I have shirts from Veterans reunions from across the country. The flowery Hawaiian shirts have quite a history. Do a google on it. I have a mass of them and always wear one when I travel to the midwest. The people seem to hate it when someone ttries to bring a little sunshine into their gloomy world.

Those are the only piccs so far. When I get more work done I'll post more pics.

What kind of truck is that? I mean, manufacturer & model number. I need to get something like that.

Good looking build. Great color. Those cars should have come with a propeller on the back end because they're big as a boat.
-
Nice, clean build. Looks good.

Not funny, Stasch. I paid for the shirt way back on December 20, 2010 so I'd have it in time for the February 5, 2011 JaxCon show in Jacksonville, FL. There's still a couple of weeks to go.

I'm building another Revell '32 5 window coupe and wanted to try something different this time so I cutoff the running boards and glued the front fenders to the frame. I then reshaped fenders. The rear fenders were glued on and I reshaped them and added a panel between them. I'll be using the hemi engine in this puppy.
