Looking good and a cool build being you HAD one over there! Looks like you didn't have to make the dash right-hand drive at least. It had to be weird driving that over there. When I visited England long ago, I left the VW in Calais to avoid driving on the "wrong" side of the road.

I wouldn't use balsa for any wood. It has a large grain and just doesn't work that well. A model railroader can give you more reasons than I. Basswood is the favored real wood for diorama use. It has a much finer grain and is available for hobby use in many sizes. For windows and doors, look in the model railroad aisle (web sites) for O scale units. A number of companies make ready to paint and install units, usually in plastic. Sorry I'm not helpful with company names, but model railroad sites will get you all the info you need.

I start by inserting it far into the chuck so only what I need shows. It will flex less the shorter it is. As said, it doesn't take much pressure for these small bits to penetrate, so you hardly have to press it. I pay most attention to keeping everything straight and aligned as I twist the drill. When I need to stop I release the part if it's a small one. Even an engine block won't break the bit but I keep it all vertical anyway.

Welcome to the forum and I'll try to answer your 2nd two. I think many things are used as based and it depends what you're doing or what you have laying around. Plywood is common, but rarely when you'll see it in the finished dio. Then you'd use some solid wood maybe. Foam board is another choice as it's much lighter and has almost the stiffness of wood. Typically it's foam between 2 layers of paper and is available in most train hobby shops. It is used for Dio walls quite a lot also.

It's still a projected 2 days before my copy arrives based on previous agony. Monday I'm gonna wear my MCM printed pants down for the mail, made using Eelco's technique in his Mexican Blanket post!

An inkjet nozzle doesn't touch the paper normally, so there is a "microspace". Many printers adjust this space on their own depending on the paper specified. This opens up many possibilities, so thanks to Eelco for donating his printer to the greater cause!

That is talented work and a great looking build. It does go to show that you can make most anything just by putting basic shapes together. The roof looks like about the only piece more carved than basic building blocks.

In 1962 I was home doing a chop, channel and section on a '40 Ford Sedan and talking my Dad into a hobby store trip for some Pactra Candy Apple Green. Never made it the that World's Fair. I wonder what ever happened to World's Fairs?

Personally, I think the model companies anticipation is probably far above our simply wanting it. They sure have a lot of cash to get back!
