school me on dehydrators
Dave Van replied to Lownslow's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've been using a $9 unit from Big Lots since 1995 with no issues. No on off, no temp control. I use it with Testors, Dupli-color and Tamiya paints no issues. I leave Tamiya painted cars in for 30 minutes and they are ready for another color or foil. Testors enamel 1-2 hours. I have left them in over night with no problems. Between the dehydrator, Tamiya and bamboo stick with alligator clips it has speeded up building. -

I must have over looked the hybrid part of the article.... -
MPG estimates vs. reality
Dave Van replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Former lawyer says it all. I have a 2009 Honda Fit which is very close to a Civic. EPA sticker is 34 hwy. But because I hyper-mile drive 90% of the time I get 39 mpg on a regular basis. BUT if I felt like sueing I could drive in manual Sport mode (vs auto the Fit has 2 modes) and I bet if I tried hard I could get 20-25 mpg easy. So did this judge take into consideration how this lawyer drives??? I ask because my son has 2 Civic's and both are in the 40 mpg range......without much trying. I think it's all a scam on her part. -
There is a 2nd 'Gone' movie?!?!?!? (I hate the Cage movie) AMT/R2 have two 71-73 Mustang kits out. The kit with the yellow car can not be built stock....and is the trashed remains of the original AMT kit. Matchbox folks cut it up bad. The AMT kit with the blue Mustang on the box is the old MPC KIT which is decent and includes a nice race interior and stock interior. The needed flat hood can be found on the JoHan 71 Mustang funny car kit. Cut the hood from the funny car body and it fits perfect!! I have not found the EXACT dog dish caps but some without the FMC letters. Tamiya Camel Yellow over gray is real close to the film cars color. There are a few cars from the real film I'd like to build.....think I can find a 4 door 1973 Matador?!?!?!?!

D&C is one of the movies I am building a number of cars from. I have only one completed......... I am about 75% complete on the Duster. I had a '73 built up from my youth and it was built well for the time. I striped the paint and made a few mods. There are a few more you can build.....a few more that you can get very close to.

True....but it is often used in hobby tools that are as small as 1 inch square and are needed for a limited life. Just trying to inform.

Mold material is not the highest cost component. But just FYI Plastic injection molds can be made from high nickel steel, aluminum, or even epoxy resins. And some cottage guys are injecting resin into RTV molds so that counts as injection. Design, licensing and fine tuning it takes, tooling mods, to make a kit fit and build it where your cost is.

Tamiya Paint?
Dave Van replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I picked up light green, light blue and white primer Sat in Mooresville NC. Shop was very low but said they had more coming. -
Tamiya Paint?
Dave Van replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks for posting that. Tamiya always said it was a 'California label issue' that caused the shortage. I grew up in So Cal and still visit often....but they kill themselves sometimes with choking regulation. I have friends there that shut down their businesses only because of over regulation....so I speak with some knowledge and not just rumor. -
There are kits from the same era that are tooled better than the Gremlin. This time period was unsettling at best. The real car manufactures were struggling badly, The main promo manufacture, JoHan was having issues and I really believe this Gremlin kit was quickly tooled when AMC and Johan went their ways. The AMT Matador from the same era does not suffer the same issues as the Gremlin....almost as if the Gremlin was rushed. STILL....I am one happy AMC fan right now. I got a mint sealed Pacer off that bay place to build my Baja racer!

Tamiya Paint?
Dave Van replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When I looked the other day all but 9 colors were in stock at Tamiya. And those colors will return when labels are updated. You can thank California for all this. They are 'PROTECTING' us!!The issue is every dealer was out and they all ordered and thus they got partial orders filled. If it's a color I have to have I order it direct. -
If you're old like me you went through the slot car craze of the 1960's when there were 100's or 1,000's of 1/24-25 slot car kits on the market. AMT, MPC, Cox, IMC etc all had big lines. And AMT just issued 4 new 1/25 slot kits.

I have built a few of my cars I've owned. The last one was my 1999 Concorde. I took the AMT kit, removed the aero kit, filled the wing slots and found stock wheels and tires. Added my tag at the time. Painted it the same candy apple red paint that cost me $300 when I bought it and made the emblems on my ALPS printer. The best highway car I ever owned.

About the upcoming convert. Hudson...
Dave Van replied to Jon Cole's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Great work as always Sean......You really make it look good.....too bad they were gone by the NASCAR convertible days!!! LOL -
For other folks here Plastruct makes very nice clear domes in MANY sizes. This is one Mad Max vehicle I always thought about but never built. Your 1/12 version should be killer....and I may barrow some ideas to build a 1/25 version using the 750 motor in the trike kits released a few years ago. Can't wait to see this one!!!

If you want a accurate AMC front suspension the Mustang is a start but remember the strut rods run backwards and not forward like the Mustang. Kinda a odd set up but it worked.
-
And unlike Shawn's model they did not do the rear window correctly so to me it was useless. I know how to swap tops....making the inset rear window is something I'd love to see a how-to.
-
You did a really good job on the back window. Most conversions I have seen use a stock 65-66 Mustang window which is WRONG! Owning a real 68 notchback it drives me crazy! Nice job overall!
-
Are you having issues other than those addressed here??? There have been two grille fixes posted here and my chassis fix. I did not get any other fit issues really. It is not a 'modern' kit with fit of the Moebius Hudson....but I am so happy to have it back!!!
-
Thanks for the comments. I tend to keep it simple in my current builds. For years I did the full blown contest builds. After I won 2nd place at the 1990 Hot Rod International Model Championship I found I did not enjoy contest building any longer. That combined with arthritis and macular degeneration....and I am much happier with simple builds. I build for myself but still enjoy sharing. There are some more in progress pic in the album http://public.fotki.com/DaveVan51/2012-builds/ And when I feel like it I will still do the full blown detail....but not often as it becomes work!!

Just a slightly modified build of AMT's NASCAR Matador. Testors paints and Penngwen Hobbies decals. Mock-up Just about finished.....will Future it in a week or two..... Engine bay..... THANKS!
