Well....I ordered one under the impression it was NOT the IMIA tool. I never had that kit because of all the bad press. I'll just wait and see...... Thanks for the pics any way....

That was a very early private issue kit. Much like Model King today it was a run made for a company who paid for a run. The company name I can't remember right now but it was a model train distributor that specialized in 'G' scale trains....which are 1/24 or near depending on manufacture. IIRC it took the company a few years to sell all of them as their ad in the model train magazines ran for a while. As far as value I don't see it being any more than a regular Monogram issue..... The reason for the plain box is Monogram would sell kits 'bagged' cheaper than custom printing a box plus I have seen boxes with addresses and postage on the box top so they may have shipped them in these boxes too.

KIT MOTHERLOAD--SWEET OFFERINGS AGAIN!
Dave Van replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Moebius, and Revell or AMT for that matter, don't give out sale figures for regular production kits. BUT I can say that the Tim Flock Hudson sold out all 3000 copies LONG before the kits landed in port. And the soon to be released Tim Flock 300 is heading that way fast! So all things considered going well. The new Hudson conv is really nice too. BTW which ECTO is it?? AMT or Polar Lights kit? I can't remember who did which?? -

Vote with your wallet!!! Gremlins sell....then Pinto and Vega will be a logical choice. Per a Monogram product manager, now retired, the 1/16 stuff was damaged in transit from Aurora. -

school me on dehydrators
Dave Van replied to Lownslow's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've been using a $9 unit from Big Lots since 1995 with no issues. No on off, no temp control. I use it with Testors, Dupli-color and Tamiya paints no issues. I leave Tamiya painted cars in for 30 minutes and they are ready for another color or foil. Testors enamel 1-2 hours. I have left them in over night with no problems. Between the dehydrator, Tamiya and bamboo stick with alligator clips it has speeded up building. -

MPG estimates vs. reality
Dave Van replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Former lawyer says it all. I have a 2009 Honda Fit which is very close to a Civic. EPA sticker is 34 hwy. But because I hyper-mile drive 90% of the time I get 39 mpg on a regular basis. BUT if I felt like sueing I could drive in manual Sport mode (vs auto the Fit has 2 modes) and I bet if I tried hard I could get 20-25 mpg easy. So did this judge take into consideration how this lawyer drives??? I ask because my son has 2 Civic's and both are in the 40 mpg range......without much trying. I think it's all a scam on her part. -
There is a 2nd 'Gone' movie?!?!?!? (I hate the Cage movie) AMT/R2 have two 71-73 Mustang kits out. The kit with the yellow car can not be built stock....and is the trashed remains of the original AMT kit. Matchbox folks cut it up bad. The AMT kit with the blue Mustang on the box is the old MPC KIT which is decent and includes a nice race interior and stock interior. The needed flat hood can be found on the JoHan 71 Mustang funny car kit. Cut the hood from the funny car body and it fits perfect!! I have not found the EXACT dog dish caps but some without the FMC letters. Tamiya Camel Yellow over gray is real close to the film cars color. There are a few cars from the real film I'd like to build.....think I can find a 4 door 1973 Matador?!?!?!?!

D&C is one of the movies I am building a number of cars from. I have only one completed......... I am about 75% complete on the Duster. I had a '73 built up from my youth and it was built well for the time. I striped the paint and made a few mods. There are a few more you can build.....a few more that you can get very close to.

True....but it is often used in hobby tools that are as small as 1 inch square and are needed for a limited life. Just trying to inform.

Mold material is not the highest cost component. But just FYI Plastic injection molds can be made from high nickel steel, aluminum, or even epoxy resins. And some cottage guys are injecting resin into RTV molds so that counts as injection. Design, licensing and fine tuning it takes, tooling mods, to make a kit fit and build it where your cost is.

Tamiya Paint?
Dave Van replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks for posting that. Tamiya always said it was a 'California label issue' that caused the shortage. I grew up in So Cal and still visit often....but they kill themselves sometimes with choking regulation. I have friends there that shut down their businesses only because of over regulation....so I speak with some knowledge and not just rumor. -
There are kits from the same era that are tooled better than the Gremlin. This time period was unsettling at best. The real car manufactures were struggling badly, The main promo manufacture, JoHan was having issues and I really believe this Gremlin kit was quickly tooled when AMC and Johan went their ways. The AMT Matador from the same era does not suffer the same issues as the Gremlin....almost as if the Gremlin was rushed. STILL....I am one happy AMC fan right now. I got a mint sealed Pacer off that bay place to build my Baja racer!

Tamiya Paint?
Dave Van replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When I looked the other day all but 9 colors were in stock at Tamiya. And those colors will return when labels are updated. You can thank California for all this. They are 'PROTECTING' us!!The issue is every dealer was out and they all ordered and thus they got partial orders filled. If it's a color I have to have I order it direct.
