TAMS 28th Annual Model Car Contest & Swap Meet
styromaniac replied to akorna's topic in Contests and Shows
Greg tells me that the Tidewater Automotive Modelers will be hosting their 29th Contest and Show at the same venue this October the 23rd...theme will be Vintage Racers. -
Looking at that rocket engine bell housing at the rear....reminds me that I read once that Craig Breedlove supposedly tried to secure a Lunar Module descent engine from NASA...the thrust could be throttled up or down...to make another land speed attempt. Wonder if that's true...or just rumor.

Quite a nice Resurrection you got goin there Dave. And using classic kit components. I've always liked that small block Chevy from the Tweedy Pie kit....have incorporated it into a few builds myself.

NSRA Nats East in York Pa - Model Car Contest?
styromaniac replied to styromaniac's topic in Contests and Shows
Turns out the Central PA Model Club did host it....and it was well attended. Great to go to an actual "in person" event...after all these months....and cancellations. -
Salt Flats Belly Tanker
styromaniac replied to AL.'s topic in Other Racing: Road Racing, Salt Flat Racers
Very Nicely Done. You'll never know what a challenge it is to put together one of these from scratch until you try it...it ain't as easy as it looks. And I tried one in 1/32 scale ( because the drop tank I used as a start point came from a Trumpeter P-38 Lightening kit ....just like the real hot rodders used back in the post WW II. ) -
I hear the street rod show in York Pa is a definite Go this coming weekend June 4-5-6. They mention a model car contest. Anybody know anything about it? Is it hosted by the Central PA Model Car Club?

As I recall those AMT spray laquers had a distinctive aroma...if I could catch a whiff today I'm sure it would bring back a flood of childhood modeling memories.

Bill Engwer....aka Ace Garage Guy...don't know for sure if he started out building car models...but he sure knows of what he speaks when it comes to the real thing....and has had numerous projects posted here that are chock-full of instructive commentary from both the 1:1 full scale world...and it's 1/25 imitations.

Love the Eyeball too! I set aside parts to do just that awhile back but haven't got around to it yet. Using the decal is a neat trick.

So far...so good. Really like that color combination.

Belly Tank kit in styrene
styromaniac replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks RRR...when I started that little project a year ago I went online for days printing out everything I could find on the subject....your barn find belly tanker was just about the finest build out there in recent memory. Inspirational. -

I'm the last person in the universe to comment on muscle cars of the 70s, just not my thing....but MAN those wheels are a distraction! -
Well...its a unique one-off piece now!

Looked for that Revell 48 Custom Coupe kit with the Navarro heads and manifold parts on the online bidding site...its commanding some pretty righteous bucks for a relatively recent release. Then again everything seems to be going up price wise these days.

...unless it's a curbside.

I hear ya....loss of visual acuity and manual dexterity...something we are all going to have to adjust to...sooner or later.

small bolts and nuts
styromaniac replied to vintagedragcrazy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've used Grandt Line items made for the model railroading community...but since the closure of many of the hobby shops in my area I've had to hunt for them online. -
For a scratchbuilt S.C.O.T blower that's pretty awesome work.

American Pickers
styromaniac replied to Chuckyg1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
After awhile you can't escape the notion that it's all scripted....after all...you've got location shots, overhead shots from helicopters, and probably a second van or a semi hauling camera crew and equipment. But its still a fun show...I enjoy it...and the frequent references to past product history is informative and educational. ( like Rick Dale's American Restoration...I miss that show ). I got a big kick out of the episode where Mike Wolfe, Frankie Fritz and Danielle put a time capsule in the wall of their shop addition...Mike included a built up Rat Fink model and gave a little story about Big Daddy Roth...touched the heart of this old baby boomer! -
Hobby lobby and tamiya primer
styromaniac replied to fivesuns's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've noticed that that my two local Hobby Lobbies have ceased stocking the Tamiya white and gray primer as well, a disappointment. Glad I stocked up on them this past summer and fall with 40% off coupons when I had the chance. Guess when the time comes I will try the Mr Hobby brand...but right now all they have is a can or two of clear.
