1981 "Fast 111's" Corvette 1:32 Scale by MPC: Finished

Thanks Chris. Thank you Larry, it's one of my new favorite colors. Thank you Ismael, that color definitely suits a Corvette. Based on my experience rebuilding this kit, I've begun to browsing 1:32 kits at my LHS. I think I may pick up a couple to have on hand when I'm in need of a quick-build fix in the midst of a long term project. Thank you Glen. Thanks Dan, I appreciate that. Thanks Bill, I'm glad you like it. It's a decent little kit. I'd like a go at one that I didn't have to disassemble and repair first. Thank you Larry. David G. -
Excellent buildup of a really good kit! Paint, color, assembly and detail all look great! David G.

Hello Everybody! This one is completed and can be found in the "Under Glass" section. Here's a link Thanks to all of you who followed along and offered your comments and encouragement. David G. -
Hello Everybody! Needing a break from my current ongoing and long running Lamborghini Countach I decided to distract myself with a more simple diversion, refurbishing this 1:32 scale Corvette. For those of you who may be interested, I have a WIP posted detailing the whole renovation project. Here's a link. I received this built-up model along with more than a dozen others in a "Model Car Junkyard" that I bought off E-bay back in 2010 when I reentered the hobby. This was back before those kit-breakers started opening the classic model kits and selling them one piece at a time. It didn't come boxed, I lifted this photo from eBay. This is what I started with... ...and this is what I had when I was done. Again. Before... ...and after. I don't have a lot of experience with 1:32 scale kits so I was a little surprised by the amount of detail that was actually there for me to pick out and well... detail. Some of these details include the nicely cast raised white letters on the tires. The wheels however, themselves are a different story. They required a bit more creativity. I thought about making heat shields for the side pipes but decided not to as I wanted to keep this a simple build by doing my best with what the kit had to offer. So I drilled out the ends of the side pipes and called it good enough. Of course I had to do a vanity plate. A California tag of the era seemed appropriate. For what it's worth, the hood opens to reveal just the merest hint of an engine. The undercarriage is decently detailed with brake cables and other features cast into it. But I decided not to take the time to call them out with detail painting. Over all, I'm pleased with the way this one turned out. I really like this color, Duplicolor Medium Quasar Metallic. It just seems right for a Corvette. As always, thanks for taking the time to look and please feel free to post a comment. David G,

Good call on the stock wheel covers. I like the effect of flat-spotting the tires too, I'll have to give that a try sometime. I'm always afraid that I'll overdo it though. David G. -
That hinge is just mind-blowing! ? David G.

To WIP or not to WIP
David G. replied to atomicholiday's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I do a WIP thread on pretty much every model I build. Doing so helps me to keep track of my progress and planning for each build. I also do it to get feedback from the community here. There are many tight spots that I've been helped out of through suggestions offered by other, more experienced builders among our group. Not to mention the kind words of encouragement that have helped keep me inspired to continue building. Though completion is the goal of each of my builds and I do enjoy the unique feeling of satisfaction that comes from completing a build, for me it's mostly about the journey to get there. Learning through discovery. That's what I most enjoy experiencing and sharing with this wonderful community. So yes, I WIP. David G. -

Hello Everybody! I thought I was going to have to make a replacement for the windshield but I managed to get the original one cleaned up and polished well enough to make use of it. After installing the windshield, I found that the hood sits a little high in the back when closed. The thickness of the the hood and windshield together prevents it from closing completely. My plan now is to file down the underside of the back of the hood to reduce its thickness enough to allow it to close properly. In and of itself, this is not a big issue. The only trouble is that I have very little paint left. I probably enough to finish the job, but maybe not. I suppose I'll find out. Filing down the hood still didn't give me enough leeway to get it to close completely so I ended up filing the windshield down a little bit along the bottom edge too. There was a bit of a flash or a casting lip along that edge and removing that and some additional material gave me just enough clearance to get the hood to lay down more like it should. The only thing left was to clean up and repaint. I masked and painted the hood using the last of the paint that was in the can. Unfortunately when I removed the masking part of the paint went along with it. Luckily, I was able to repair it by using a bit of thinned PA to glue the paint back in place. I'm glad it's in an out of the way area. That's all for this round, I should have this one finished in the next couple of days. As always, thanks for taking the time to look and please feel free to post a comment. David G, -
