  1. There should be an emenent domain statute for "collectors" of desirable (note that I didn't mention perceived 'value') vehicles !! For an instance ; around 10 years ago , I spotted a 1973-1977 Chevelle in someone's driveway . It had "454" bezels around its front side marker lights ; a very sunbleached "FOR SALE" sign was placed-upon the rear package shelf , and was faintly visible through the backlight . I had it all planeed out in my head ; casually check the car's V.I.N. for that precious "W" engine code , then go inquire about the selling price , while remaining naive to what the car "really was" . Well , I found not only the desired "W" code (LS-4 454) , but also a 4 speed shifter jutting-out of the trans tunnel ! I held-in my excitement ; I casually approached the house's door. The house's inhabitant answered my knocks at the door , meeting me with a jeery-snare and the verbage of "You here about the car ?" "Yes" , was my reply . " Do you know what it is ? " " Well , it's a seventy-three through seventy-sev--- " ** I was interrupted with a : " If you didn't know what it was , you wouldn't have bothered asking ... " It's a 'dangerously-fast' car ; sixteen-second quarter-mile times ..." After a brief pause , I continued : " Well , with that out of the way ; what's your asking price ?" She snapped back with : "Sixteen thousand , and not a penny less ." Then I pointed out its condition ; I directed her line-of-sight to the front of the forlorn car : " Y'see the license plate ?" "Um , yeah ... what about it ?" "Everything behind it needs replaced or restored !" At that point , I'd figured that this lady watched too many Barrett-Jackson auctions (the bane of real enthusiasts) , and simply left her with the final word : " It's painfully apparent that you'd rather let it sit and rot in your driveway , than let it go for a reasonable price to someone whom recognises its value in the automotive historical archives . Good luck with ever selling it . Have a nice day ." The End. Case-in-point : My assertion that an "emenent domain" be instituted for cases like this is based-upon "fair market value" for said vehicle , and removal of said vehicle from its "collector's" property . Something similar to what historical socities utilise to prevent further disintergration of buildings / houses / etc.
  2. Weren't Wide Whites out-of-style by the early sixties ?
  3. For starters , I think it'd be great if one or more of the top casters could collect the top Jo-Han AMC kits -in virgin form- and produce some fresh moulds .
  4. I would die if Round2 were to reissue these kits !! My parents bought a 1976 Monarch in March of '76 . It was a 2 door coupe with the 351W ; silver with cranberry red interior and a silver "quarter top" . Been looking for these Lindberg 32nd scale Monarchs for some time . Seems that I can never "win" one when they pop up on eBay
  5. 15" wheels were the largest size for street cars at the time , and 14" were average . I remember checking out the then-new 1984 Corvettes at the local dealership ; and when I saw 16" wheels on it (and those VR-50's !) I remember thinking , Whoa ! 16 inch wheels ! That's huge ! It wasn't until the mid-late 90's that wheel sizes got ridiculous . In 1993 , I was reading an article in Mopar Action whose feature was the prototype Prowler . Its wheels were outrageous ; and its 19" - 20" tyres were unreal ! I'll still take 14" - 15" wheels on my vintage cars , any day
  6. Additionally , Tamiya's Chrome Silver is vastly superior in every aspect to Testors Chrome Silver .
  7. Here's my 2 cents , for whatever that's worth : I always brush-on a base coat of Tamiya that's close to the desired top coat ; to wit : if I'm going to paint , say , a TorqueFlite transmission in aluminum , I'll paint the part first with Tamiya flat , light grey ; then after that's cured , I'll brush-on Testors aluminum . I find that starting with an acrylic base coat , that the enamel top coat just "sits" on top of the base coat ; no "lifting" or "mixing" ever ! So , with Testors Chrome Silver (which , for as long as I can recall , has always been slow to cure and dry-to-the-touch !) , I'd recommend a Tamiya aluminum base coat , then cover that with the Testors enamel . Let me know how well that works
  8. Johnbuzzed - And here I thought that I was the only one whom remember the Holley Econo-Master atomiser ! One of my older neighbours had a 1967 Malibu with a 327 , from 1975-1985 . Its 327 was topped with an Edelbrock intake and the 390 cfm (?) Ecomo-Master (among other mods) . Thanks for popping that memory capsule ____________ ________________ _____________________ _________________ __________________________ ________________ I'm 43 years old , so all of the "Highway Hi-Jackers" I witnessed were the possessions of others . Growing up on a side street from the action on Whittier Boulevard and its fledgling cruising scene , and living in the west part of Whittier , I got to see different styles of cars Here'a list of cars which I recall from that era ; some Lowriders (west part of town) and mostly Muscle and Street Freaks (east part of town) : - 1966 Chevelle with an 8-71 GMC huffer (cops were always hastling that guy !) - 1968 Hemi Dart ( race only car one of my neighbours had in the 70's . I'll never forget that car , as every time he fired it off , it frightened me . Its explosive noises were extra loud to a 5 year old !) - 1970 Road Runner in FE5 red , with real gold leaf inlayed over the original hood blackout and Air Grabber flap . Its rear was pretty tall , but not ridiculously so . - 1968 Barracuda Formula-S 383 hardtop ( not the normal "fastback" bodystyle) in Q5 Turquoise , Ansen Sprints , and illegal (read : functional via a hidden slide) Doug's side pipes . After not seeing this car for over 15 years , I finally saw it again when I bought some brake parts for my '72 Demon off of the Barracuda's owner . The car was still in his possession and was undergoing a "day 2" restoration . - 1955-1956-1957 Chevy 4 door wagons which were turned into "shorties" by removing their rear door section . One which really stood out to me was a candy tangerine '57 with BBS wheels (!!) - Tube framed 60's Bug with a tunnelram on its small Chevy V8 - 1969 Boss 429 with a clear hood scoop over its tunnelram ; black with a reddish pearl ; Motor Wheels Spyders set it all off . - 1960 Pontiac with Cragar S/S in 13" diametre , thin whitewalls ; organ pipe speakers ; Craig 4-Track ; maroon / white / black Tuck-N-Roll upholstery . This was my friend's dad's car ; he eventually painted in a candy red rose , as inspired by the base colour of the Gypsy Rose Lowrider .
  9. I sent an email to Testors , including the list of colours provided by pack rat (thanks again ) , yesterday evening . This morning at around 0700 HRS west coast time , I received a response from Testors via email. Unfortunately , those colours --at least with those part numbers-- are long gone . While this news is disappointing --I was hoping that the colours were simply reassigned to the Masters line-- I was never-the-less pleased with Testors quick response . Please continue to share your recollections and experiences with these colours ; I'm hoping to see some photos , too . Thank to all of you whom have contributed to this thread !
  10. Add me to the list of another one whom recommends Missing Link ! Kevin's stuff is simply the best (I say that with respect to the other casters whose works I am not familiar with) . The photos don't do his masterpieces any true justice . You won't be disappointed !
  11. I wonder , how much better would fuel economy be if 90% of the airbags were deleted / eliminated ... I have no true idea on how much their overall contribution is to the weight of a vehicle (and I mean not only the bags themselves , but all of their related circuitry) , but I can only imagine that it's quite a bit ! All things being equal ; let's take a, say , 1972 Pinto , and add the engine / 5R55 trans / 4.10 geared diff --including the engine's direct injection arrangement , computer controls and all-- from a ,say , 2008 Ranger , and see what its economy ends up being . I'm willing to bet that it'd be superior to the economy of any of these new "Nintendo on Wheels" vehicles that are available today ! I'll take me a Thomas Guide over *most* GPS / Navigation systems , thank you
  12. Unreal ! What's the date on that can ? Let me know how well it works :) :)
  13. NICE ! Thanks much for the list :) :)
  14. WHOA !! That's cool ! Wonder if any are ever sold ? They're nearing 30 years in age ! I do recall Kiln Red Metallic as it appeared under the Masters banner . I'm sure that it's one of the carry-over colours ; I just can't remember its Car Colors name . When the Monogram 1/12th scale 1957 Chevy Bel Air premiered in 1986 , I bought one for my friend for his birthday , and one for myself . I painted mine Kiln Red .
  15. Great to recognise that you're still around , Bruce ! I'd like to see you turn this kit into a 2 door wagon ... (hint , hint)
  16. Would Black RTV Silicone work ?
  17. Do you recommend a 366 (destroked) Hemi with twin ignition , or a W2 355 small block ? . It looks very nice , Chuck !
  18. YES ! I absolutely remember those colours ! I've used both of them on a couple of the dozens of MPC (1984) "Special Edition" Anniversary Corvette models that I built back then . The colours you'd mentioned ( ) in addition to Sky Blue Metallic and "_______________" Red Metallic . Matter of fact , I just bought a factory-sealled Special Edition Corvette from eBay ; that's what catalysed my recollection of those spray colours . I wonder what's a 'close enough' aerosol paint that's readily available , that's similar to Sky Blue Metallic ...
  19. I am pulling the remaineder of my hair out searching for info about Testors Car Colors spray paints from circa 1983 - late 1985 . This line of aerosols was replaced in Fall 1985 by the then-new Model Masters line . Am I the only one whom recalls this short-lived line of paints ? If anyone else recalls these paints , please share your recollections here ; and it's even better if you've got photos / links !
  20. PappyD340 - I really like your '55 ! Nice , clean construction and sublime finish . My fave years for the Corvette just happen to be 1955-1957 .
  21. It's too bad that you've encountered such a negative experience with Hart's Parts . At the risk of sounding condescending ; sounds like your experience is quite the anomaly . Did you ever receive your parts from him ?
  22. I absolutely concur on the wait time ; "Do it once , do it right , or don't do it at all." A life-long favourite kit of mine has been the coveted AMT Star Truk [sic] . I'd built a number of that kit when it was new ; however , my skills were , shall we say , "not good" , so I'm looking forward to these new F-Series from Moebius ! Take your time , guys . We , the hobbiests , have already waited for umpteen years --and many have paid inflated Sothebey's auction prices on auction sites for-- a scalled version of this American icon .
  23. I'd say go ahead with your original colour choice . Chrysler would let anyone special order any colour , especially if it was already in their chart . I've seen an EA9 Charcoal Irr' 1970 Challenger R/T ; that colour was only 'available' on the 1969 Imperial ( the "E" in the paint code = "1969" ) . It was coded "999" on the fender tag . I'm sure that the same was true --albeit under a different sales code-- for the 1968 models .
  24. That should be a sweet Fury when you're done with it ! 1968 was the last year that one could get a 4-speed in the C-body line , with the 330 hp 383 as the top choice (no 440 / four speed available , unfortunately) . Maybe your Fury would look even sweeter with a Hurst shifter (spring 1968 & later) or an Inland shifter (up-to Spring 1968) peeking from its console ! The Jo-Han kit already has a 4-gear behoind its 'generic' Chrysler big block , so your work's cut out for ya .
  25. Mopar Action did an article on the Mannix Dart about 3-4 years back .
