1988 - 1991 Ford LTD Crown Victoria Scratchbuild
av405 replied to DEL's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
As impatient as I am to get my hands on the finished product, I'm very happy that you're aiming to be as accurate as possible. Concerning the Modelhaus Impala: It covers the 1980-1985 Impala body but it has the 1981-1985 grill. 1980s had a unique grill. -

Based on what is visible, they are both 1981-1985 Impalas, so your IDs make perfect sense. The Modelhaus offers this car as a resin kit, though the status of the company is in limbo right now. I myself have two of these kits. -
Is it just me ...
av405 replied to Lizard Racing's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
All this talk of technology and social media is fairly spot on, but can we also talk more about kit subjects out there? I was born in 1991 so I grew up around cars from the 80s and beyond. With the exception of AMT and Lindberg in the 90s (generally speaking), nobody has really focused much on those cars that I grew up around. The hobby is very centered on kits representing vehicles from the 1950s-1970s. I'm not knocking those subjects, and I know why companies choose to focus on these decades to appeal to the majority of model builders out there. However, it would be nice to have more contemporary/semi-contemporary subjects to focus on younger generations. Some great kits that fit this bill have been released these past few years, but it is clear where the focus of the model kit companies lie. I am always envious of the wide spectrum of time periods that the armor community has to work with, especially with modern subjects. Just my 2 cents. -
1980-94 Ford F series medium duty grill
av405 replied to Aaronw's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That is correct. It was only the first few years of this body style that had the FORD lettering on the grill. I want to say it was 1980-1981, just like their smaller light duty brethren. -

Outstanding! And I would vote for the 86-90 Caprice next. The Impala name was only attached to the pre-1986 models. -

Hearing this makes me even more excited since Greg Wann does excellent work. I already have a few of his Mustang LX bodies and they are superb. As for the talk of the Caprice: A few weeks ago I was talking to one of my agency's EVOC instructors/testers and he stated that finding out that the Caprice would be discontinued in a few years factored into the decision to not invest in a Caprice fleet. We only have one for PR purposes. -

Great update, thanks. Are you talking about Greg Wann? -
MPC 1984 GMC Pickup (Video Review) 2016 Reissue
av405 replied to hpiguy's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
This was my mistake for not being specific enough. It IS the 1983-1984 grill, but as pointed out it's the base version of the one offered on the Deserter kit. The headlight arrangements are a bit different but the grill itself is the same. -

That's the 1983-1984 grille, which is the one in the MPC Deserter kit. Unless I'm somehow misunderstanding your question? -

Any news or pictures? Sorry, I'm impatient! -
I should have tried your method at EVOC a few days ago Agent G. I'm sure it would have gone over well.

MPC 1984 GMC Pickup (Video Review) 2016 Reissue
av405 replied to hpiguy's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
FYI the 1981-1982 Chevy grill was offered on the MPC "Sod Buster" version of this kit. It is also made in resin by Modelhaus for their 1981-1982 Chevy Suburban kit. Maybe if they reopen for business that would be a good source for one. I have two but have plans for those. -
I had to cancel going at the last minute. Looks like I missed a heck of a show.

It's funny, I have this same exact project in mind. If memory serves me correctly, the 1991 Caprices were actually the first to receive the updated blue stripe graphics. However, there is a picture out there showing a 1991 with the old school graphics and I prefer the simplicity of these.

Very clean. I love those late 80's/early 90's color/decal combos. They were unique, unlike many of today's police cars.

MPC 1984 GMC Pickup (Video Review) 2016 Reissue
av405 replied to hpiguy's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
Ahh I see, thank you. I think I'll still pick up 2 of these kits as I never had a chance to buy any of the previous releases. I have a 1981-1982 Chevrolet grill from Modelhaus that should go well with the 1981-1982 bumpers on this kit. -

So if I understand the review correctly, this can be built as a 2WD model so long as the builder provides his/her own tires? -

It seems like you have quite the laundry list of items. Just based on what I see, the 1988-1991 Ford LTD is a good start for me personally. It's the police car I've wanted the most, followed up by the 1986-1990 Caprice. I know you addressed this, but any new pictures of the car as it looks now would be great. Especially at this stage where you're trying to garner interest. -

Also, here is a thread I made last year on an ultimately failed attempt to commission a similar project. You can see how much interest was garnered just on this site: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/102274-1990-1991-ford-ltd-crown-vic1987-1989-chevy-caprice/ -

I would definitely be interested in purchasing some if good casts are made. -
You have any pictures of those?
-
Set for re-release later this year: I already have 2, but I will probably pick up an extra. I'm mostly excited to see what the decal sheet will look like.
-
While I was hoping for a different variant of the original 1/24 truck, I'm just happy to see them releasing another kit of a modern pick-up. Hopefully they will stick with this topic with future releases. I can see the 1/35 being a success though. The military model builders will no doubt rush to create their own versions of the PMC trucks used in Iraq during the war.

Tony's Hobbies is in Baldwin Park. That place was mentioned already and the OP said he stopped by.
