I can see there's much you and I agree on About the tail lights, I use bare metal foil for the chrome strip at the bottom so working with an all-red lens is much easier than working with a poorly masked off half red/half clear piece.

So far there have been 3 issues of this kit. The first was in the late 90's with the Ohio State Patrol and Orange County Fire Authority versions. Then we had the 6 multi-agency releases back around 2008 or so. And now we have this re-release, which seems to be a simplified version of the 2008 re-issues but with security decals instead of law enforcement markings. I still honestly prefer the original Lindberg versions. They contain more in the way of extra equipment, such as a detailed Vector/Vision light bar and spotlights. In addition to this, the tail lights are fully red instead of a half-assed red/clear that the re-issues have. All around, the original is better if you want a good kit to paint and customize with extra parts, but the re-issues are better if you want a pre-painted kit and want to skip that step. Andy, do you mind showing us pictures of the kits you just picked up? I'm curious to see what's in them. Thanks.

Ahh yeah, you're right. I was expecting utility-type wheels.

I thought the kit included stock wheels?

How to Remove "Ghost Trim"

After you're done with body work, apply some plastic cement and then re-sand the area. This should eliminate the memory. -
Scale Modeling and Youth?
av405 replied to drsnapper55's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I am neither steamed nor griped. You made generalized comments about my generation and I felt compelled to respond as I felt they were inaccurate. Isn't that the purpose of a discussion board? And how could my comments on who I've met be irrelevant when you have to be able to talk to other people to see what the general feelings about something are? As for cars not meaning what they once did, well again I'm a young guy so I won't claim how anybody pre-1990's felt about them at that time. They still mean something, but that meaning has evolved. I'm sure the guys who grew up on horses and carriages felt the same way when they saw younger people in cars: "Transportation doesn't mean what it once did." I will admit that my generation is probably not as mechanically savvy as previous generations, although I wonder how much of that has to do with the increasing technological sophistication of cars. Now please, stop saying that I'm steamed or taking this personally just because I disagree with you. I'm commenting on a DISCUSSION board and letting my opinions be known, just as you are. But perhaps we're moving a bit off-topic. I think we can agree to disagree if all else fails- 43 replies

Scale Modeling and Youth?
av405 replied to drsnapper55's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What? Do you even know what uber is mostly used for? It's replacing the traditional taxi, not one's want to drive back and forth to most places. Most of my fellow millenials use uber as a designated driver when going out to drink or for trips to the airport. If anything I would write you off as an "old coot" because I feel like your statements on this thread are inaccurate and overblown. And I haven't met a single person who thinks a driver less car is something to look forward to.- 43 replies

Ahh okay. I ask because when you mentioned it in a previous thread, it seemed like a guarantee. I guess we'll have to wait.

So this is something you predict might happen? Or do you know something we don't?

Stealth Fighters - Traffic Cop Style
av405 replied to Danno's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think you're grouping all aspects of the law enforcement profession under one umbrella. Your statement really only applies to traffic enforcement where, for better or for worse, a police officer can be more successful at enforcing traffic laws if the public doesn't know he/she is there. Also, I disagree with your statement because if you look at how police car graphics have evolved over time, you'll see that police cars are actually becoming more "obvious." Gone are the days when a simple star on the door would do. Now you're seeing much more extravagant designs and bigger fonts on police cars, along with more agencies switching from all-white vehicles to black and white schemes. -
That may be the case. I know that the first two days the Shell tanker was released, it was shown to be in limited stock but that changed right after.

Wasn't an administrator mentioning a few months back how Round 2 would be re-issuing the AMT 1984 GMC Pickup?

Stealth Fighters - Traffic Cop Style
av405 replied to Danno's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's not something you really see down here in So Cal. I don't know if local laws prohibit it or not but the only "stealth" features that local agencies use are slicktop cars. That is, no light bars on the roof. And then there are, of course, the all-white Highway Patrol vehicles. -
I just got these from Tower Hobbies. After free shipping and a $15 discount was applied, this ran me $38. Oh and it was delivered to me in one day. I cannot rave enough about Tower and their services.

I suppose they didn't properly store the kits, causing the decals to go bad? Sorry, still don't know much about how decals can degrade.
-
I always liked the subject matter you focused on. I look forward to more. Welcome back.

Thanks Tim! I wondered why the box art and decals were changed. I really liked the red/yellow striping combination in the original. A few more questions: Was this tanker used in a specific geographic area or all over the country? Up until when were these commonly in service on the roads? Does anybody have pictures of Shell tankers from the era? Thanks.

Are model kits making a comeback? What gives?
av405 replied to ERIK88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm 24 years old and I can tell you that when I was younger (pretty much circa the millennium), it was easier to find model kits sitting on the shelves of the local Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, general store, etc. In fact, seeing a model on the shelf of a department store that my mother used to frequent is what got me interested in this hobby. But now you really have to know where to look to find a model, especially a decent selection, and I feel like kids now don't have the opportunities for such sudden encounters that could tune them into the hobby. It seems like there's more options in the way of kits, but you definitely have to turn to more specialty stores like your LHS, HL, or a hobby website to acquire the kits as opposed to just running into them while running errands at "normal" stores. I have my opinions on how I believe the subject matter we're seeing a lot of at the moment might be turning younger people away, but that's for a different topic. -
It's available at Tower Hobbies as well. What was the time period that this type of tanker was in use in the United States?

Ahh, I guess I have no one but myself to blame then. That's disappointing. I wasn't the only one who showed up. Any photos at least? -
