Parts Mounting Tips (for painting)
Tom Geiger replied to JollySipper's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I clean up and spray everything. I never spray or paint parts on sprue and I try not to brush anything. I also pin much of everything in my building. If there’s little plastic mounting nubs, I’ll sand the area flat, drill and insert metal straight pins. I use those little bathroom paper cups for a lot of things in the model room. I’ll sort parts into them, if I’m going to touch up something with a brush or detail paint, I spray the paint into a cup. Note- I use the paper cups, plastic ones melt with paints. The cups become nice little spray stands, as in my first photo. Most parts get mounted on toothpicks or pins and then stuck into the cup. I will also use painters blue tape to tape parts to the cups too. If a part seems top heavy, I’ll stack a few cups together to add base weight. Generally a small part like a carburetor or master cylinder gets drilled and pinned. I will leave the full length of the pin on it for handling and mounting for painting. I cut them to length when I’m ready to assemble. Below photo just illustrates how pins are used and the standard wire cutter that easily cuts them. I have a small battery powered drill. The cups get reused until they get ratty, then tossed. I ran out of new ones and haven’t been able to find any since the lockdown so cups will be getting really ratty! -
In January I got pulled over by a NJ State Trooper on the Garden State Parkway. My wife and I were talking and when I saw the trooper sitting there and saw my speedometer I knew he was coming after me! And with a Pennsylvania plate and license. He asked for credentials and wanted to know where we were headed. I told the truth, we were headed to our house in NJ. He asked more, so I explained we were NJ people but moved to PA for a job. He comes back to the car and I knew he wasn’t gone long enough to issue a ticket. No doubt he ran me and like you, I have a super clean license, so he cut me a break. As he gave me back my papers he said, “Hey do me a favor and slow down? I clocked you at 88.” Yes sir!

If people hadn’t noticed, Revell’s plan was to create modern quality tools of popular iconic cars we would buy and build over and over. The whole idea of the 1932 series was to create a big set of parts to mix and match to be able to build many different cars. And the series probably wasn’t done yet! The Model A series was to be a follow up to this and the whole series of events around the bankruptcy of Hobbico threw a wrench into that. No doubt there were more versions planned.. for instance the second frame and things like the excellent fuel tank and battery that got hidden in the sealed roadster trunk. There had to be plans for an open trunk in a future version. We will see what the future brings. Fortunately Ed is still involved for some continuity, but we have a new parent company to convince to invest. Now throw in the worldwide pandemic and financial effects!

My Compliments on the New Categories

Guys, you can avoid the categories.. at the top of the screen click on the icon of a newspaper. That’s”Unread Content” of all categories. Posts come up newest to oldest. Just scroll the list and read what you choose. That’s how I read the board. -

Started a pair of Jeepsters today. One will be a pickup and the other will be a convertible with a backseat. Working with what I have on hand, and because i already have an interior In this color, the pickup will be red. Not sure about Jeepster two just yet. So far I pieced together two vehicles from boxes of parts including a couple of the later Commandos. I have cleaned up two bodies this afternoon. The hoods have a scoop cut out that’s exceptionally deep and can be seen as a distortion from the top of the hood. These are sitting filled with thick CA drying. We are on our way!

"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!

Could do that! But gold would be too fancy! I have an extra Stovebolt Chevy six planned for that build. -
"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Tom Geiger replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Hey I warned ya! I’m not feeling the Amish Buggy custom, and I’m missing some of the paints needed to pull it off, so I’m changing horses! I pulled this Jeepster down from my unfinished project shelf the other day. There’s parts from what looks like several kits to complete it. I remember what shelved it.. this was pre Internet and I was using an original Jeep brochure for reference. Somehow they had the drawing of the engine in gold. Once completed and wired, I took it to my club meeting where I was informed that was incorrect. So I was ticked off and put it aside. Looking at it today, I have a box of parts Commando versions with extra engines that don’t belong in that year Jeep anyway. So I will do another engine on the proper color, which I have in stock. I will save the gold one to use in a street rod or something. That would be an interesting engine in my next T Bucket! So I will start this one today! -

back to the forum, no more FB!
Tom Geiger replied to Gramps2u's topic in Welcome! Introduce Yourself
Welcome back! I have both the model car boards and Facebook. I try to use FB for family and friends. I belong to several groups which have connected me with folks I grew up with, as well as relatives I really didn’t have contact with before. The model car influence has crept in and I’m in touch with many of the same guys on the model boards as well as guys who left the model boards for different reasons. And an interesting phenomena is guys who are well behaved here can be raving political loonies on FB! Lately I’ve hidden several prominent modelers who post constant political barrages. Don’t need to see that! I also have found that the modelers on model boards are much more advanced. On FB in the model how-to boards, guys are arguing how to brush paint bodies, then someone pops on to challenge painting models at all. I chuckle since guys on this board get upset if someone asks a reasonable question that has been asked before! -
Ace / Bill is just upset because he’s just finishing up his own model of this car! ?

Nice. I remember back in the fall of 1970 when this car came out. There was controversy that Pontiac had really butchered the 1968-69 body style! My uncle was an investor in a Pontiac dealer back then and as part of that he got upgraded to a new car every year. I remember him refusing to turn in his 69 for one of these! The design has mellowed with me through the years. I have the recent convertible kit plus an extra to use with a resin coupe body I own.
