When Modeling Skills Transfer To Real Life
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
An interesting follow up... See the above photo. Somehow my daughter had the same ornament from 2017 for my oldest grand daughter! She asked me to create the decals for this one too! Easy Peasy! -
Try this... I've used scale heater hose (hollow) to bulk up very small drill bits so my drill chuck will hold them. I've glued them in the hose.

Isn't that the truth! When I got back to modeling at 30, my results were the same as when I was 15. Why? Same skill level, same tools, same techniques. Once I found a club, I learned a whole lot. It's not raw talent, but the tools, materials and tricks. And a lot of practice once you are on the right track!

What did you see on the road today?

Yes. Folders and albums. It works great. Here’s our club album: Https://www.fotki.com/tssmcc

Love the work you've done to the interior! It would be cool to display it alongside the kit part so people will understand all the work you did there!

Jim, it's only a matter of time before something changes with Google Photo being free. And since it's one huge folder, you've already discovered that you get what you pay for. I've been on Fotki for a very long time. Their rates are cheaper than what you were paying... $1.53 a month ($18.36 per yr) for 300 MB, $3.08 a month ($36.96 per yr) for 600 MB and $6.17 a month ($74.04) for 4 TB. All plans have unlimited bandwidth and ability to post in messages. I would say just to sign up for one year, as they have periodic sales and that's when you buy the 3 or 5 year plan.

Just beware of photo storage on your phone, especially if you wish to keep your photos indefinitely. At different intervals I will download the photos from my phone to my laptop and then copy them to an external drive. I will then delete photos I no longer wish to carry on my phone to reduce the load that gets backed up to the cloud each day. It's always good to have them on an external drive. That way you have the photos on three different devices which should protect you against any snafu!

Since we now are in the giving season, I thought I'd kick off a thread.... My wife's sister and I are pretty close. I've known her since she was 15. Back when she was 17 and wanted to purchase her first car, she entrusted me with being her adviser and bargaining person. After looking at a few cars, we bought this lime green Chevette for some $1500. It served her well. It took her all the way through college and into her work life. Once she was married she got another car. She mentioned it to me, how she remembered the whole story and how fondly she remembered the Chevette. So I had to build a replica! It started as a promo, so I didn't have to do under hood or chassis detail, which was perfect for this project. I added a few personal touches. The bag in the back is her college colors with it's logo. And there is a college decal on the rear glass. The car came with the Ying and Yang decal on the rear side window. And I used flocking to duplicate the fuzzy seat covers the car had on it when purchased, which stayed on it the entire ownership. We usually go to her house for Thanksgiving. So after dinner I presented her with this model. Both my wife and I were pretty excited in anticipation. And of course she loved it. She showed it to all of her friends and it sits on her desk at home. It was fun and surely it was better to give than receive! Your stories....

My local Rite-Aid has a diecast free standing rack in the aisle, but only has smaller scale cars! Ratz! Many years ago, has to be 11-12 years ago since I worked there, our group secretary told me her husband had a GTO. I checked with my friendly diecast dealer and found the car in the right color. I asked her for the plate info, and made a pair on the Acme site. I put them on the car with photo etched frames and he was very pleased!

I buy Florsheim shoes on-line. I have an unusual triple wide size that the stores don't seem to stock. Actually it was a shoe guy at Macy's that told me to go to their website. I get emails from them on a regular basis about sales. And even then, half the time they don't have the triple wides on the sales items!

Before I'd clear coat I'd use a decal fixative on the decals. I've used Microscale Micro Sol (red text, bottle on left). Put your decal on with your normal warm water, once it's in place dab on a bit of the Micro Sol with a paint brush. Be careful not to move it, as the decal will begin to react near instantly. At first you'll worry as the decal starts to wrinkle, but leave it alone and it will dry well. This stuff will pretty much melt the clear carrier around the decal and make it look painted on. You can clear coat over it. (as always, practice on something not important to you!) And the Microscale Micro Kristal Klear is the stuff you want to use to glue on lenses and windows.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner! That's the company I was thinking about. As you said, cheap, poor, diecast we recognize as being from other manufacturers being sold under their banner.

Suitable kits for 'Ford vs. Ferrari' film
Tom Geiger replied to 89AKurt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A lot of it goes back on the movie makers. They should've seen licensing opportunities and acted upon them. Ever notice that whenever a new Disney movie comes out the toys are in the stores months before the movie ever comes out?- 13 replies

Welcome Logan! As you figured out this is a friendly community and the guys here will do anything to help you with your projects! I got back into the hobby some 30 years ago when I was your age! Back then we didn't have the Internet, so I found a club and the guys there helped me expand my skills greatly in a short period of time. But back then there was that month void between meetings, now a days you can learn here daily and get instant feedback. So use it for all it's worth!

Suitable kits for 'Ford vs. Ferrari' film

This seems to be a good movie to have a lot of swag for sale, such as branded diecast cars and (gasp!) model kits!- 13 replies

When Model King did a large scale funny car, it took him years to get rid of them all. Very little demand, no matter how vocal the fans are on the boards.

Not all that long ago the post office was talking about stopping Saturday mail delivery to save money. Now I'm seeing their trucks here on Sundays delivering on-line orders. Both of my daughters buy much of everything on-line. At either of their places those unmarked trucks are dropping off packages all day long.

Looks great Tom, I've been pondering what to do with the same kit. I like that you added two bays. I understand why MRC only had one for size considerations, but there are few if any real stations with only one bay! Take a look at those gas pumps. Both in your photos with cars and the ones in my own kit, they look too large to my eye. Maybe just too tall, in all the photos I can find, the window is at a height that someone in a car can read it. Here's a site with a lot of pictures: http://pleasantfamilyshopping.blogspot.com/2011/03/golden-age-of-gas-stations.html If you want some ideas on pavement, Ken Hamilton has been doing work on Facebook as well as in the latest issue of that other magazine.
