This was supposed to be the “Last Hurrah!” for obsolete tooling that nobody saw a need for in the future. Get one run done for John’s Bargain Store before trashing the tooling. Remember these were toys for kids, nobody then ever imagined the collector market in the distant future! Fortunate that a few of these survived!

VW Beetle Aftermarket Performance Parts?
Tom Geiger replied to OutaFocus's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Thanks for quoting my old post Bill! And while I got ya, a question... the car above is a VW drag car with a US V8 that was built by American GIs in Germany around 1970. It used the stock VW front end. So the question - was a VW front end ever used in drag cars or street rods? I know things like Volare and Mustang II front ends are popular, even reproduced. Were VWs used or is this car just outright dangerous! -
The best $50 I have ever spent

Relax, my father is a t.v. repair man and has this ultimate set of tools, i can fix it. We enjoy your youthful enthusiasm! We were all like you when we were your age! -
Here it is July 28th and I have yet to use my pool! We opened it up the week before July 4 and the heater wasn't working, so the water was too cold (it sits in the shade so the heater is essential!). That cost me two weekends and the July 4th holiday. Then the pool guys came the following week and got the heater working. Past that it's either rained or we've had obligations every single weekend! I get home from work after 7pm so we only use the pool on weekends. I was looking forward to this weekend! Sunny and warm both days. No obligations! Then what happens? My younger daughter buys a condo and closed on it this week. My wife agrees that we'll come up and help her paint all weekend! We leave the house here shortly! So much for my pool dreams!

Nice. I like your interpretation of the front end. Hey, it's your model, do it the way you like. One of my favorite car colors too.

Group 29 - the thread for everyone's '29 Ford Roadster builds

Since we're talking about this kit... for those who haven't built one yet, beware of the nubs where the interior side walls key into the floor pan. It should be covered by the chassis, but is visible. and not a Revell '29 but an example of the side valances.. this was an old Monogram built up, restored into a new build. -
Murphy was right!
Tom Geiger replied to Oldcarfan27's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Also works with spray cans... You go for a final coat of candy apple red and you reach for the spray can... and only notice you picked up the wrong one once you squirted flat black onto the body! -

and of course no replacement hood will ever have matching paint! -

Murphy? Best paint job I ever did... not a mark in it. Two tone separation lines perfect! The problem? This was on a body I had already pre-dented and pre-rusted for a beater. So I just sighed, hit it with the Dull Cote and proceeded with destroying it with the weathering process. -
Youngster! I have model cars older than you! I'll be hitting the big 6-0 in September. I may not be that old, but I have a lotta miles on me!

What Did You Have for Dinner?
Tom Geiger replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Rich, I started drinking Yuengings when I moved to Pennsylvania too! Nothing like a local brew and an American owned one to boot! A Red Stripe Beer story... My wife and I went to Jamaica for our honeymoon. We stayed at an all inclusive place called "Couples". The bus ride from the airport to the hotel was on narrow curving roads that went through small towns. Suddenly traffic stopped and we spot villagers walking on both sides of the road carrying cases of Red Stripe Beer. I had never heard of it at the time, but there were men carrying two cases, one on each shoulder. Women carrying bottles in their aprons, kids carrying a few bottles each. Puzzling. We inch up the road to the scene of an accident. The tractor trailer that had a flat bed full of pallets of Red Stripe Beer missed one of the tight curves and was laying on it's side. And the trailer was getting lighter by the minute! We got to the resort and guess what the house beer was for the week? I thought it kinda tasted like Schaeffer. -

Circa 1990. I was at a local hobby shop and the owner was giving me gift certificates to give away as door prizes at our show. She had me follow her through the back room and I spied some Johan 1962 Studebaker convertibles on a shelf. I asked and she said, "That's obsolete stock nobody wants." I walked out of there with the stack of 5 for a ten dollar bill!

Okay, it's a promo and not a kit, but it's the rarest piece in my collection and the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread! This is the ultra rare 1966 Valiant Signet promo. I've tried to do research on this one and this is what I've deduced so far. There were Valiant promos, then Craftsman kits, of Valiants from 1963-1965. Those three are are the same body style. For 1966 Chrysler made body line changes, including the roof line. The promo has a totally incorrect roof line and rear glass. The real car has all straight lines. The flat spot in the trunk lid is also wrong. I know that AMT made a full order of these because they exist in several colors. This one is the silver blue. I've also seen red, burgandy and yellow. I have a photo of a light blue, but I cannot be sure if its not the same color as mine, but in different light. My theory is that Chrysler reviewed the samples and rejected the lot, ordering them to be destroyed. I believe that the examples existing today were a shipment sent to Chrysler for internal consumption. Every one that I was able to trace history on started out as property of a Chrysler employee. Who knows where the communication resulting in this model occurred. First thought was that Chrysler gave AMT early plans for the car, then later changed the roof line. We may never know. There was no Craftsman kit to follow this promo. In fact, I believe this became the basis for the Fireball 500 kit. Note that early on people thought that the '66 Barracuda promo / kit became the Hemi Under Glass kit, and then was changed into the Fireball 500. Note that the tooling for both of these exists today. I have examined a Valiant body alongside a Fireball 500 body and there are mold marks that match inside. So I relay the entire story here, first for education in the hobby, but second hoping that someone involved with Chrysler or AMT back then can enlighten us!

and be careful storing your models in packing peanuts. They will also cause problems over time. Especially the ones that are designed to break down and return to the environment. Remember, none of this was ever designed for stability over long periods of time. Model manufacturers sold a product that was supposed to be opened and consumed.
