What da heck? ?

Ha! That’s hilarious and ironic! The paint i bought there wasn’t easy either. The paint racks.. both Tamiya and Testors.. that they only sell because of RC cars.. is in the very back corner of the store.. Katy corner to the RC service counter. As I headed for it, a kid yells at me, “Where you going?” I reply, “Paint Rack” pointing in the corner. He yells back, “You can’t go behind the counter. Tell me what paint you want and I’ll give it to you.” I ask, “How would I know what I want if I can’t look at it?” The rack is far enough back and sideways so unless I came in with a pre researched list. So I ignored the jerk and went to the rack. I told him the last time I was there I bought $80 worth of paint. So he stood there and stared at my back the whole time. I needed the clear red. I was looking for a green for a project so I quickly picked one and I always get an extra can.. or three of clear gloss. If I had been left alone, or if someone was (gasp!) a tiny bit friendly I would have taken my time and maybe doubled / tripled my purchase. Next thing they’ll discontinue paint because it doesn’t sell!

I started working as a drafter / designer in petrochemical piping back around 1980. There was a large model shop where they actually built refineries pipe by pipe. Instantly I wanted to do that. Soon enough that was all done in 3D CAD! And you learn and change. I spent the next decade setting up CAD systems for companies!

I was in NJ at my daughter’s and stopped in the local hobby shop because I needed the clear red paint for my VW tail lights. Also grabbed a can of clear and dark green. Dismal! This is the entire model department. About 20 kits total. Note the two trailers.. but no tractors! This shop used to have a ton of kits but nobody there knew anything about them. A rep from their distributor told me they had a standing order for one of each kit! So they would never know if a kit was popular! Back then I tried to talk with the owner but he just rolled his eyes and said nobody buys kits anymore! And the kits just shrunk and shrunk. A self fulfilling prophecy!

Data base on the history of kits ?
Tom Geiger replied to Jon Haigwood's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
That was owned by David Cura who passed away last year. He was a member of the TSSMCC and NNL East Show Team. He was a great guy who passed way too young. -
Can you get a USB connector for that? ?

I use spray cans for the very reasons you state. I’m apt to grab a can and give a part a ten second squirt with the Tamiya can, then go back to what I was doing. Just this morning I grabbed a bumper, mounted it on a stand and sprayed it gloss black. Then I went downstairs for coffee. All I needed to paint that color was the bumper.. underlay for Alclab Chrome, which I also have in a spray can!

It is.. but since time has gone by and we have a group build on the subject I was curious to see if any of these poor models actually got completed! -
Bring Out Your Dead... Long Stalled Models
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in WIP: Model Cars
My own success has been mixed.. some I finished, some I finished in two rounds and others just crashed and burned! I thought I was going there with the Studebaker but decided I couldn’t stand the personal shame so I pushed through it! -
Ford is finished! Many thanks to those who commented, your suggestions were incorporated into the project! The Under Glass thread:

I’ve had two of this kit forever and I have no idea where I got them! I just know that a dozen years ago I had a vision of this car with red fenders. So finally I scratched this itch! This American Metal kit has a metal body and hood, while everything else is plastic, including the fenders. There are tons of tiny parts to fiddle with. Fit wasn’t great and frustrating at times. I abandoned the pegs on a lot of the parts and glued them in place. I am quite pleased with the final results! The body remains the prepainted black, but the fenders and accents are Duplicolor Cherry ? Red. The grilles and running boards were then sprayed with Tamiya Semigloss clear. Per the board members advice in my build thread, I detailed out the wheels and narrowed the metal axles to tuck the wheels in the fenders better. I also tried to modify the stance by raising the front axle and lowering the rear axle. You can see the front tire sits up into the fender but I don’t think it all raised the rear by much. I got rid of the kit’s license plate holders since they were heavy and toylike. The interior is all different tones of Duplicolor reds, then hit with Tamiya semi gloss. Not that you can see it, but the floor was done in embossing powder. The kit flathead didn’t have a lot of detail but actually came with a wiring loom. And a final parting shot with a friend! Glad to get another one on my shelf! Now onward to finish my father’s Beetle and then back to the 1960 Plymouth airport limo!

Bring Out Your Dead... Long Stalled Models
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in WIP: Model Cars
And you brought it to life! That's why I'm curious as to how many of these maybe got finished... -
Bingo! How many times do we see people posting if their 1960 Skitzmobile gets kitted, they’ll buy cases of them? A resin caster once told me that people on the boards had pledged to buy some 50 of a kit he proposed.. when he did offer it, maybe six sold! I haven’t been tracking the Oldsmobile, but the Nova wagon appears to be selling well! so Buy Buy Buy People!

Bring Out Your Dead... Long Stalled Models
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in WIP: Model Cars
This thread I started back in 2014 popped up today. You can see where the “Bring Out Your Dead” program Snake admins got its name! Looking at the maybe 100s of great builds posted here, I can’t help but wonder how many of these actually are now finished. For me, the VW drag car is still in the box. The 1960 Plymouth airport limo wagon is currently on the bench as my entry in this round of BOYD! So folks… post what you have completed in this thread! -
Looks great! As a kid in 1969 I lived a few blocks from AC Chevrolet and kinda became a mascot there so the 69 is close to my heart ❤️ I never did own one but had a 1970 Impala formal coupe and my dad had a 71 Belair sedan forever.
