Google search is becoming trash; here's why
Ace-Garageguy replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Worse, in my opinion. Much worse for what I primarily use searches for. Example for all of them: I defy anyone to find a definition of "spittier port" on any of the usual search engines (yes, I spelled it right: S P I T T I E R). You can find listings selling fittings and adaptors, listings that ignore the spelling and try to stuff unrelated results down your throat, etc., but not one single articulate reference as to exactly what it is and why it's named as such. You can find results that allow you to infer what it is and follow the rabbit hole if you have sufficient technical knowledge to do so...but no specific definition or why it's called "spittier". EDIT: Just to be very clear, I know what it is and what it does. What I want to know is WHY it's called "spittier". -
This is a quote from the comments on the video below. My sentiments exactly. Anyone who tries to find technical info now will have experienced something similar. I've felt that ever since somewhere between 2015 and 2018, Google search has become completely unusable. It is not only the fault of ai generated content and a wild growth of unsearchable platforms like Facebook and Twitter however. As the years progressed I've felt more and more that Google actively ignores part of my search words. When I search something that's three words or longer, I now only get generic results for one of the words I filled in. Some of the words are actively missing. Or I get a lot of store results where to buy something vaguely related to my search query. When searching something very specific, it's just not possible with Google anymore

Rustoleum paints are terrible.

https://www.amazon.com/plastikote-spray/s?k=plastikote+spray PlastiKote was removed from most US parts stores (replaced by the Duplicolor line) after having been reformulated to semi-uselessness last time I tried any of it. Their primers in particular were once the go-to for many modelers because of their ease of handling, good coverage, and styrene-friendly solvents...but in recent years many users, including me, have given up trying to do anything with them. There have been many reports of the online-available products being nothing like what we remember, and often having spraying issues to boot. Maybe it's time to test some again, but I'm of the opinion "why bother". -
Cool stuff, very creative, advanced for the time. I still have some drawings from way back then, and it seems to me that dinosaurs could still be seen occasionally out my window.

Ace-Garageguy replied to Warren D's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Cool project. I remember these well from my misspent yoot when there were still a few in military service prior to their replacement by the M34/35. Bought the Wespe kit some years ago, muchly interested in watching your build. -

Amt '53 Stude or Avanti would be suitable chassis donors... -

Depends on your point of view, apparently. In the real world I make real things for a living. It's work. It's hard work, technically and aesthetically demanding work, and it's work I love. I wouldn't do it otherwise, 'cause I'm sure as jell not getting rich. Building models is, to me, exactly the same kind of "work", just on a smaller scale. Think I'll have some time to work on a model later today, actually.

Stock engine for the S&H Torino
Ace-Garageguy replied to junkyardjeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It does look good...unless the manifold extending a couple of scale inches beyond the back of the heads bothers you as much as it does me. Possibly the suggestion made above of just changing out intake manifolds is the best solution. -
Stock engine for the S&H Torino
Ace-Garageguy replied to junkyardjeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, the engine in that kit is an awful lump. If memory serves, there's a decent 351C in the old AMT '74 or so Cougar. Not in much demand, can be found cheap. EDIT: Oops. Few years ago nobody wanted 'em. Now they're expensive. -
Atlantis kits?

Nice job on a kit that's not at all easy. -
Atlantis kits?
Ace-Garageguy replied to Sidney Schwartz's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Atlantis currently repops some subject matter, in these cases old Revell kits, simply not available anywhere else. I have these, and they're good kits for a competent modeler. The Martin P6M Seamaster means a lot to me, as my father worked on the program. I still have two of HIS models of it from the period, and an Atlantis repop to build for myself. The Allison gas turbine kit also means a lot to me, as it was part of my introduction to non-piston aircraft engines. Far as car models go, Atlantis is repopping some truly classic Revell "parts-pack" sprues, and putting them together into kits almost identical to what I built in the 1960s, and learned a great deal from. Fish can be spelled "ghoti" if you use some of the weird spellings in other English words.

For guys who know what they're doing, there are indeed deals to be had for the "good stuff". But for the typical online "price shopper", you might as well burn your money as buy some of the total junk that's out there. One Delphi fuel pump I bought recently retails for around $300, over $500 from a source that "specializes" in the car it goes in. I found the same part # online, NOS, in the box with all the right identification and casting marks that prove it's legit for $125, shipped. Chinee knockoffs "just as good" for $25. Really? Not in something I have to stand behind...or rely on.
