worst commercials - i have to mute the tv
Ace-Garageguy replied to youpey's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Anything woke that tells me, by virtue of my immutable characteristics, I'm responsible for all the world's woes. The infamous Gillette ad was the first one to really chap my backside, and the hits justa keep on comin', folks. I (and many of my peers) probably have more buying power than 100 of whatever dwerps these marketing geniuses think they're appealing to, so it doesn't seem all that swuft for ad producers to apparently intentionally alienate their core demographic...but hey...common sense is becoming increasingly less common daily. And the list of products I'll never ever buy again keeps on growing. -
All agreed, but in general, eBay is becoming an increasingly glitchy mess. And many search engines are far more concerned with collecting marketable data on their users and ranking search results on the basis of the management's particular biases than providing a clean product.

Appreciate it and protect it.

Ebay's moronic "we looked everywhere" because old photos from eons ago still populate the interdwerbs, but when you try to go to the site, you get a shot of a dumb kid. Awww...isn't that cute...and useless. Entirely appropriate considering the way they apparently hire and manage their IT people these days.

Take a minute or two today to reflect on what this holiday is really about. Freedom isn't free, so honor those who paid the price with their lives.

Sprue Stretching Tutorial

VERY nice. Short, concise, and to the point. I'll never wonder what to do about clunky looking antennas again, and of course there's the potential for lotsa other uses... -
Man. Damm. Man. NICE. One of the finest models I've seen.

What Did You Get Today? (Not Model Related)
Ace-Garageguy replied to LOBBS's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Yeah, but it's a dry heat. Seriously, when it's 85 here and 70% humidity, by halfway through the day I'm beat...and soaking. Out there, long as I drink enough water, high 90s feels good if I'm mostly in the shade and the wind's blowing (which it always is), and at the end of the day I'm not dog tired. Besides...it's 10 degrees cooler today where I'll be than where you are. When I worked out there, we also got to the shop at about 06:30 and knocked off around 3 PM to beat the worst heat. That's the way I'll be living. Plenty of time in the early evening to work more after it starts to cool down, too. -
I'd be...annoyed...as well. I'll never understand some folks' motivations. But if the little ones were gone and not hanging around anywhere, it's a good bet they can fly, and mombird will still be feeding them somewhere else for a while anyway. The first day out of the nest is the most dangerous for young birds, and the strongest ones often get eaten by cats because they leave before they can fly enough to get to a branch high enough to be out of reach. I've lived on wooded lots for decades, and I've seen lotsa nesting birds in that time. Anyway, if mombird wasn't fluttering around trying to attract attention away from the kids, it's likely they can fly well enough to get in the trees, and they'll be OK.

Karens...always on the lookout. At least she waited until the little ones were gone.

First get her drivable enough to make it across the country for the move. Then after I'm settled in the new place, upgrade everything that's prone to failing (like relays and switches) and convert to Euro lights and bumpers. I'll probably swap the GM 700R4 gearbox from my '86, and then keep her. They're great cars to drive on long trips, have very good brakes, handle and ride exceptionally well, and you'd never think they were 35 years old from the way they feel. With the 4-speed automatic 700R4 (which has a lockup torque converter too), my '86 would get around 25MPG on the road...not bad for a big comfortable car at 80MPH. The '87 is also the last of the "real" Jags, with the essential vintage English build style still very much in evidence. It's also the last Jag built with the legendary XK engine, dating back to 1949. The '87 version is a little gutless, with emission-tuned EFI and very mild cams, so I'll probably address the power issue when the EFI finally dies. Webers, cams, and headers ought to easily get her up to 300HP, a lot better than the 185 she makes stock. -

Finally picked up the '87 XJ6 I bought a couple (?) years back. Thought it was an '86, but the the third brake light and VIN say otherwise. Last year of production. This one was almost perfect cosmetically not too long ago, having been treated to a beautiful new interior and an excellent respray by its next-to-last (the original) owner. But after being in a basement full of semi-feral cats since 2009, it's a little fuzzy on the outside, and blistering on the hood where the leaky litter box was for over a decade. The interior, however, still presents...and smells...new. She cleans up pretty well, and doing the hood and a few rust spots is no huge deal. She also needs some work to complete what the last owner had started, repairing the climate control system, but that's no huge deal either. Only other problem I'm aware of is a weeping porous cylinder head casting. Lucky I have spares for almost everything. -
Gofer Selling Revell Parts Packs?

If you're on a lap- or desktop, go to the address line above the video. It starts with youtube.com/watch... Double left click it. It'll get longer, and will add https to the beginning. Keep left clicking until the whole address goes blue. Then right click the same line. You'll get a menu. Left click the "copy" option. Then go to your forum page and insert it with the "paste" command, Ctrl v, just like putting a photo in. -
And I'm so glad I'm an old geezer.

Modeling vs. reality
Ace-Garageguy replied to El Roberto's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I simply rely on my own judgement, based on whatever information is available under the circumstances. I find it's usually a pretty accurate approach. -
Modeling vs. reality
Ace-Garageguy replied to El Roberto's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The answer is pretty clear to me, but I'll try to explain it differently. One modeler builds something that can't possibly work because he's unaware of how things work in reality and/or just doesn't care. The other guy builds something outlandish while perfectly aware that what he's building is impractical or physically impossible in reality. It's the awareness that makes all the difference. A too subtle distinction for some maybe, but an important one to me when I look at someone else's (or my own) work. EDIT: If a man appreciates the skills of Michelangelo and can do work at that level, but chooses to nail a banana to a wall and call it "art", that's one thing. But if a man who can do nothing but nail a banana to a wall and call it "art" does so, that's something else entirely. See the difference?
